Why is the FA Community Shield played?

The FA Community Shield and why it is played

The FA Community shield is played every year between the English Premier League champions and the FA Cup champions. The match this year is between Arsenal, the FA Cup champions, and Manchester City, the Premier League holders.

The match was originally designed to be a replacement for the Professionals XI vs Amatuers XI fixture, that was played as the Sheriff of London Charity shield. The first time the match was played between the FA Cup winners and the League winners was in 1920, and the format became the accepted form from the year 1930, and was formerly called the Charity Shield.

Organized by the Football Association, the match is held to help charities across the country, and the clubs distribute proceeds from the game to charities and community initiatives across the country. The charities are chosen by the 124 clubs that advance beyond the first round of the FA Cup. The money is generated from the gate receipts and the programming sales is given to the clubs to be allotted to charities and causes of their choices, while the remainder of the money goes to the FA- affiliated charities.

The competition was renamed in 2002, as the FA failed to disclose the amounts that went to charity as is required by Charity Law, and delayed payments to the charities nominated. So, the name was changed to Community Shield.

Played at a neutral venue (Wembley stadium, London or the Millenium stadium, Cardiff), both clubs are given equal numbers of tickets, and for the last three years, the ticket prices have been kept constant and very competitive (ranging from £20 through to £45)

The 2014 Community Shield between Arsenal and Manchester City will take place at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 10 August, with both teams receiving approximately 26,000 tickets for the fixture.

Each club that played beyond the first round of the 2013 FA Cup will receive a £2,000 payment from The FA, and both Arsenal and Manchester City will receive £25,000 for a charity or good cause of their choice.
