A 55-year-old Portuguese worker is assisted after being seriously injured when a piece of iron fell on his head when disassembling a crane, at the Amazonia Arena in Manaus, northern Brazil, on February 7, 2014. The 42,000 arena, which will host four matches of the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup, has been beset by problems during construction including the deaths of two workers.
A 55-year-old Portuguese construction worker has been killed in an accident at the Arena da Amazonia in Manaus.
Identified as Antonio Jose Pita Martins, the worker apparently was hit on his head while dismantling a crane that was used to install the roof of the Arena da Amazonia, reported The Washington Times.
Martins used to work for a Portuguese company called Martifer, a multinational industrial group which is based on metallic construction and solar energy sectors.
The crane had been removed as the work at the site has almost being completed, revealed Miguel Capobiango, Manau’s World Cup secretary.
He is the third worker to have died in an accident linked with construction in Manaus as a similar incident happened last year when a certain Marcleudo de Melo Ferreira, 22, died after falling from a height of 35-meter.
The Arena da Amazonia will be hosting England and Italy’s opening World Cup match.
