Video: World Class own goal from Vergini commences Southampton's rout of Sunderland

Southampton cruised to an emphatic win over Sunderland

Southampton continued their brilliant start to the 2014/15 season as they romped home with an astounding 8-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday. This was the Saints’ biggest win since their 8-0 rout of Northampton Town all the way back in 1921.

Southampton were one of the teams not expected to do well this season after their squad overhaul of all their star players, but they have proved everybody wrong. Now, it looks like they are going to be a strong contender for European qualification. Ronald Koeman has done a brilliant job in rebuilding the side and has certainly announced himself to the world.

Graziano Pelle continued his brilliant goalscoring form, scoring his 5th and 6th goal of the season in 6 matches. Dusan Tadic was exceptional yesterday as he notched up a goal and provided 4 assists. He was named man of the match.

The highlight of the match, though, was the bizarre own goal by Santiago Vergini of Sunderland, who opened the scoring. The goal was quite fascinating because it looked like it was a goal scored by a world-class striker in top form and in fact, it could even be a contender for the goal of the month.

Sunderland right-back Santiago Vergini, sensing Morgan Schneiderlin bearing down on him, decided to try to take the ball away to safety but got his angles all wrong and slammed it past a stunned goalkeeper, Vito Mannone, and into the bottom corner of his own goal. The Sunderland fans were left stunned and Gus Poyet hailed it as one of the most embarassing moments for him on the football field as a manager.
