The children of Attari promoting peace and friendship through football at a rally

Youth Football Club Rurka Kalan and Peace One Day joined hands to organize a Peace Cup 2014 – A football tournament to create awareness and promote peace as an observation for the international day of peace. The tournament was held at Attari Village, i.e. the last border of India’s Punjab province near the Indo-Pak border on the 21st Peace Day, which is annually observed throughout the world to strengthen the ideals of peace in the world.

The parents of the children were invited to the program. The children of Attari Village promoted the message of peace and friendship by marching an organized rally in the village. The idea was to create awareness about peace and how football can be used as a medium to create friendship and harmony among kids.

Lesson plans were conducted by Youth mentors of YFC which specifically focussed on sports based activities to teach children about the influence of sports and how to make peace with your teammates of diverse cultures.

3 matches were organized in each age group of Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 categories. The format of the tournament was designed in such a way that each kid would get an opportunity to play with 2 different teams so that he/ she would learn how to coordinate and communicate with kids from a different caste/ creed. The winner, runners-up and fairplay awards were given to 3 participants from each age category.

The tournament was concluded with a prize distribution ceremony which was attended by the participants and their parents. Jerseys and shorts were given to those participants whose attendance was more than 75% in their previous two months of training sessions.

The coaches, youth mentors and participants were provided a tour of the Wagah Border to see the army parade of India and Pakistan in the evening.
