GTA V PC players face "unpacking" issues after the game's release

GTA V is available now for the PC

It seems that pre-loading GTA V has done nothing to reduce the load on the game’s servers. After nearly two long years, the critically acclaimed title finally released for the PC on April 14th. Sadly, the servers could not handle the load of millions of gamers logging on at the same time. While it isn’t a total disaster like a few other releases this year, players who pre-loaded the game will still have to spend a lot of “unpacking” the title before they can start playing.

Pre-loading for GTA V began on April 7th, almost a week before the game’s official launch. Players spent their week downloading the huge 60GB file, the launcher for which was locked down and encrypted until yesterday.

At the time of release, players had to download a fresh update which would unlock and decrypt the game, allowing them to access it. Initially, things ran smoothly but as more players started their update, the download times stretched, leaving a lot of players waiting before they can hop onto the game. Encrypting 60GB worth of data may have been too heavy. Hopefully, all of this is resolved soon.

Rockstar has issued the following statement on Steam regarding the latest update:

“So far, GTA 5 is a string of anxious ‘still unpacking’ tweets. We’re still unpacking it too, and we’ll see how it runs on the LPC when it launches.”

GTA V is available now for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC.
