5 best athletes for the week May 9th-15th May

The last week in sport saw a lot of events take place. A new Formual One winner, a new Rime Masters winner etc meant that fans had a lot to cheer about. Here’s a look at the best athletes from last week.

1.Max Verstappen

What were you doing at the age of 18? Preparing for your 12th Standard Board Exams? Searching for colleges? Maybe.

But Max Verstappen, racing in his maiden event for Redbull Racing, was doing neither last Sunday evening and on the tracks of Catalunya, scorched his way to a win to become the youngest ever driver in history to win a Formula One race.

The 18-tear-old clocked a timing of 1:41:40.017 and finished 0.616 seconds ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, who is nearly double his age and Sebastian Vettel finished 3rd, 5.516 seconds behind the winner.

It was a phenomenal moment for the youngster, who had been picked to replace Daniel Kvyat after the Russian Grand Prix earlier this year and showed what he was capable of with an excellent win to throw the cat among the pigeons, as far as the remainder of the season was concerned.

2.Stephen Curry

One of the key components in Golden State Warriors’s first NBA title in 65 years during the 2014-15 season, Stephen Curry was again in his elements in the 2015-16 season, and for averaging a minimum of 30 points in 79 matches in the regular season, won the NBA’s MVP of the year last week.

What was the special about the victory was that he was the first ever player to in the unanimously and joined the illustrious company of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Steve Nash to win the award in successive years.

His exploits have once again helped the Warriors progress through to the Conference Finals and he will hope to take them all the way this time around as well.

3.AB de Villiers

There was never going to be any debate on who was to part of this list from cricket. For an innings of 129 not out in 52 balls which included a staggering 12 sixes, The right-hander finds himself in the list for the most influential men in sport for the last week.

It was pure carnage at the Chinnaswamy and sadly, the Gujarat Lions were at the receiving end of it as everybody was carted to all corners of the venue.

That innings helped his side reach an imposing total of 249, which proved too big a total for the visitors to chase down.

4.Luis Suarez

One of the key components of the MSN trio, Luis Suarez had an insatiable appetite for scoring goals, hammering his way to 40 strikes on the back-of-the=net and helping the Catalan giants win yet another La Liga title.

Interestingly, 14 of Suarez’s 40 goals came in the last 5 matches and in addition to those goals, the Uruguayan also had 16 assists, making him the first ever footballer to lead both in goals scored and assists.

Although he won’t feature in the Euros, he will hope to keep that form intact and perform even better next season.

5.Andy Murray

If there was a surface where Andy Murray seems to have made a significant improvement in the last 12-18 months, it is clay and the proof for that was seen on Sunday when he beat defending champion Novak Djokovic to win his maiden Rome Masters title.

The Scot defeated the Serbian in straight sets 6-3 6-3 to win his maiden title and it remains to be seen ,whether in a few days time he will be able to replicate those exploits in the clay of Roland Garros.
