Delhi's Asha Kiran Home contingent wins seven medals for India at Special Olympics

New Delhi, July 31 A contingent of specially-abled people from Delhi government-run Asha Kiran Home won seven medals -- three gold and four bronze -- at the ongoing World Summer Games, 2015 in the US, an official said on Friday.

Phoolan Devi won the first Gold for India in powerlifting (Bench Press). She also won three bronze medals in powerlifting (all lifts, deadlift and squat lift).

Sonakshi won bronze medal in power-lifting (bench-press). Another contestant Mathru won the gold medal for Softball (team event). In total, Asha Kiran has won seven medals till now, an official statement said.

Being organised in the US city of Los Angeles from July 25, the World Summer Games (WSG) 2015 will conclude on August 2 (Sunday).

Ten residents of Asha Kiran were selected by the Special Olympics-Bharat through a vigorous selection procedure including championships at district, state and national levels and four preparatory camps held in Delhi and other parts of India, the statement said.

Special Olympics Bharat is a movement that uses sports as a catalyst to transform the lives of children and adults with intellectual disability.
