Indian men’s hockey team forward Gurwinder Singh Chandi got married. The 24-year-old Jalandhar lad did what some of his former and current teammates did over the years – getting married to a fellow sportsperson. Gurwinder – more popularly known as ‘Chandi’ – tied the knot with double Asian Games gold medallist Manjeet Kaur.

Marriages are made in heaven goes the saying! And it seems that Gurwinder and Manjeet were destined to take the wedding vows – the big moment of their life coming at a time when the Indian ace forward is not involved with the national team as he is recuperating from a hamstring injury.

Manjeet is a relay specialist having won both the Asiad gold medals in 2006 and 2010 in the 4x400m relay event. The 33-year-old runner, who also bagged a silver medal in the 400m event in the 2006 Doha Asiad, was conferred with the coveted Arjuna Award in 2005.

The Gurwinder-Manjeet marriage is not the first time that an Indian hockey player has tied the knot with a sportsperson. We all remember Indian striker Shivendra Singh, who got married to former international hockey player Nisha – both husband and wife played as forwards.

Even current Indian men’s team captain Sardar Singh is engaged to England junior women’s hockey player Ashpal Kaur – the lady is the first woman hockey player of Asian origin for the England national team. Drag-flicker Sandeep Singh also married former international Harjinder Kaur.

Former Indian winger, Mukesh Kumar also tied the knot with former international Nidhi Khullar. Fullback Ignace Tirkey also got hitched to Masira Surin – a member of the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games winning team. Dutch hockey legend Teun de Nooijer is married to former German international hockey player Philippa Suxdorf.
