National Games: Day 12 medal round-up

Renjith Maheshwary won the gold medal in the Men’s triple jump

We are now in the last few laps of the 2015 National Games, with just the final two days of action left to go. Services have secured the top position with 81 gold medals and 133 medals. Among the states, hosts Kerala have gone ahead of Haryana into second position.

With couple of days of action to go, the battle for second place will be the most interesting to watch. Kerala swimmer, Sajan Prakash still leads the individual tally with six gold medals.

Surprise entrants into the top 15 have been Andaman and Nicobar Islands, who have had a terrific kayaking campaign.

So let’s have a look at the round-up for day 12 of the National Games.

Taekwondo

Kerala’s Margarette Maria defeated Aishwarya Ravade of Maharashtra to win gold in the Women’s 73 kg category.

Monika Baruah from Assam defeated Preity Kumari from Jharkhand to secure the gold medal in the women’s 46 kg category.

Judo

Avtar Singh from Punjab won gold in the Men’s 90 kg category defeating Parmod Kumar from Haryana.

Ranjeeta from Punjab won the women’s 70 kg category with a resounding victory over Sunibala Huidrom from Manipur.

Athletics

O P Jaisha from Kerala won gold in the women’s 10,000m with a timing of 33:08:55, ahead of compatriot Preeja Sreedharan and Swati Gadhave of Maharashtra.

Renjith Maheshwary set a meet record of 16.66 to win gold in Men’s triple jump, ahead of Arpinder Singh from Punjab and Rakesh Babu from the Services.

Niraj Kumar won the gold medal for the Services in the Hammer Throw, Kaushal Singh from the Services won the silver medal and Sukhdev Singh won the bronze medal.

Durgesh Kumar from the Services won gold for the Services in the Men’s 400m hurdles. M Ramachandran from the Services won the silver. Binu Aquito from Tamil Nadu secured the bronze medal.

Rugby

Maharashtra won the Women’s rugby final with a resounding 25-0 victory over Chhatisgarh.

Cycling

In the Sprint elite Men’s section, Amarjith Singh from Punjab won gold as Alan Baby from the Services secured silver. Manoj RL from the Services won Bronze.
