The Supreme court of India has said that only sports personalities can be at the summit of sporting bodies in the country.

The Supreme court noted: “Sports federations should be headed by sports persons and not by businessmen.”

The court blamed politics for ruining the state of hockey in India. The court notice pointed out: “Politics has taken the game of hockey to an abysmal low.”

Currently, the sports bodies in India are mostly headed by politicians and businessmen and this has been criticized heavily over the years from various corners. All those pleas have now finally been answered by the apex court.

This topic came into the limelight after a disagreement emerged between Hockey India and Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) about who was the official representative of Indian hockey internationally.

Hockey India approached the Supreme court two years ago regarding the matter. The IHF subsequently told the SC that the government had recognised them as Indian hockey’s official representative.
The case is currently pending in the Supreme Court, and Hockey India is likely to file its response in the second week of January.
