Review: Indians in action on Day 4 of the Asian Youth Games 2013

Indian athletes bagged one silver and one bronze medal on the fourth day of the 2013 Asian Youth Games being held in Nanjing,China.

The best news of the day came from golf where young Indian golfer Manu Gandas won the silver medal in the men’s individual stroke play event. Manu Gandas signed off with a 4-under-par 68 for a three round total of 11-under-par 205. Chun-An Yu of Chinese Taipei carded 69 to win the gold medal by 2 strokes. Boonma Danthai of Thailand won the bronze medal.

Gold medal favorite Ajay Kumar won the bronze medal in the men’s 1500m track event. Ajay clocked 4:05:76 to finish behind Wang Wei of China and Ata Assadi of Iran. There has been huge disappointment in the track and field department after 18 Indian athletes were disqualified after being found to be overaged.

In shooting, Malaika Goel finished 5th and Yashaswini Singh Deswal finished 7th in Women’s 10m Air Pistol event. In the Women’s Trap event Malikaa Wig finished 4th with a total score of 6 in the finals.

In tennis, young Indian star Rutuja Bhosale caused a huge upset in the second round of the women’s singles. Rutuja defeated top seeded Taipei player Ching-Wen Hsu 6-2 2-6 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals stage. Unfortunately, 6th seeded Simran Kaur Sethi lost 4-6 0-6 to Anastassiya Yepisheva of Kazakhstan in the second round.

In men’s singles, Garvit Batra came back from a set down to beat 7th seeded Qiu Zhuoyang of China 1-6 6-2 7-5 in the second round. 6th seeded Aman Agarwal lost to Dimitry Popko of Kazakhstan 4-6 2-6 in the second round.

In swimming, Arvind Mani finished 6th in Boys’ 100m Backstroke final. Shivani Kataraia and Monique Gandhi finished 6th and 7th respectively in the girls’ 200m Freestyle final.

In squash, the Indian boys team defeated China 3-0 in the first round and Indian girls team defeated Indonesia with the same score line.
