Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar is set to play a “special role” in the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony to be held tomorrow. The Little Master will make an appearance at the ceremony in his capacity as the Global Goodwill Ambassador of the UNICEF.

While the exact nature of Tendulkar’s role is not yet known, it seems likely that it will end up being a memorable appearance.

Lord David Puttnam, UNICEF UK Ambassador, said, “There will be something special from Tendulkar, wait and watch tomorrow. Tendulkar is a Global Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF and he is happily involved with the work of the organisation (UNICEF).”

The Indian contingent in Glasgow would certainly be buoyed by this news. India finished second behind Australia in the medal tally in the previous edition of the Games, held in Delhi. They would be hoping for a similar result this time around, although the weather and conditions will be very diffrent in Glasgow.

It was announced earlier today that Vijay Kumar, the Olympic silver medallist, will be the flagbearer for the Indian contingent in the opening extravaganza.

The media in the UK has been reporting that a UNICEF campaign will be featured on the night, which would cover legends like Sir Chris Hoy, Sir Alex Ferguson and Sachin Tendulkar. The act is aimed at raising funds for projects being run across Commonwealth nations.

This appearance from Tendulkar will certainly encourage Indian sports fans to tune in and witness one of the biggest spectacles in the world of sport.
