The Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, or just the Silicon Valley Classic is an annual week-long tennis tournament that is held in San Jose, California, United States. The tournament is known for being the oldest all-women’s tournament, and takes place on outdoor hardcourts.
San Jose is a part of the WTA 500 series of events. The first edition of the tournament was held in 1971, and it has undergone several name and sponsor changes since then. Martina Navratilova holds the record for winning the most singles titles (five): a title each in 1979, 1980, 1988, 1991, and 1993.
The tournament is sponsored by the Mubadala Investment Company, which only acquired its sponsorship in 2017. Originally called the British Motor Cars Invitation, the tournament was renamed to Virginia Slims San Francisco till 1978. After a hiatus in 1978, the tournament was renamed to Avon Championships and then to Virginia Slims of California. From 1992 to 2016, the tournament was known as the Bank of the West Classic.
The week-long tournament runs from 1 to 7 August 2022. The 2022 edition of the tournament is the 50th edition of the tournament.
Venue
From 2018 onwards, the Silicon Valley Classic has been held at the sports complex of the San Jose State University. Previously, it was held at the Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Defending champion
Danielle Collins is the defending champion in singles, having beaten Daria Kasatkina in the 2021 final. However, she won’t be defending her title due to a neck injury. The doubles title meanwhile is held by Darija Jurak and Andreja Klepac.
Players to watch out for
Top 10 players Maria Sakkari, Ons Jabeur, Paula Badosa and Aryna Sabalenka, along with Grand Slam champions Garbine Muguruza, Elena Rbakina, Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu are some of the big names participating in this year’s edition.
