The Sony Open 2024 History

Since 1965, the Sony Open has been a constant on the greens of the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. This exciting and one-of-a-kind tournament starts off the golfing season in the calendar year, offering players from around the world the opportunity to show their sheer passion and talents with stunning scenery under the warm Hawaiian sun.

Though only a little has changed over the years regarding the tournament, other than the timing. Previously, it used to take place in autumn, as it was the perfect escape to the winter blurs with world-class golfing.

The Sony Open has witnessed remarkable moments throughout history and attracted top-tier talent. Legends like Hubert Green, Corey Pavin, Lanny Wadkins, Ernie Els, and Jimmy Walker have all claimed victory twice, adding to their major championship accolades. The Sony Open is truly unique as it has seen its fair share of historic breakthroughs, like Isao Aoki's 1983 win, marking the first Japanese victory on the PGA Tour. John Huston etched his name in the record books in 1998 with a breathtaking 28-under-par performance. The Sony Open also gained attention for inviting a young Michelle Wie, offering her four consecutive sponsor invitations starting at 14.

The Sony Open 2024 Course

The Waialae Country Club is situated amidst Honolulu, Hawaii's golden sands and swaying palm trees. Constructed in 1927, it remains one of the world's most fantastic golf courses, which is not surprising given that it was designed by no other than the renowned golf architect Seth Raynor.

The most unique part of the Waialae Country Club course is that, when Seth planned it out, he paid his respect and homage to all the iconic courses around the world! For instance:

  • The par three: The par three is highly inspired by the Biarritz Course in France.

  • The 8th Hole: The 8th hole is inspired by the Redan of North Berwick, Scotland

  • The 16th Hole: Waialae's distinctive 16th takes inspiration from the 6th hole of the National Course at Southampton, Long Island

  • The 10th Hole: Lastly, the 10th pays homage to the legendary road hole at St Andrews, Scotland.

Waialae's manicured fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and oceanfront vistas continue to challenge and inspire golfers of all levels. It's a course where history comes alive with every swing, a testament to Raynor's vision and the unwavering dedication of the Waialae community.
