Women's Round 4
Aditi Ashok

After a medal drought that lasted more than ten days, India finally has two medals in the bag- both of which were won in quick succession. A big day for the women in our contingent as Sakshi Mallik and PV Sindhu won a bronze and a silver medal respectively.

While both Sakshi and PV Sindhu made big news, 18-year old Aditi Ashok registered a top 8 finish at the end of Round 1 in the Women’s Golf event. For the better part of the day she had the top score and was the first name of the leaderboard. Aditi will feature in the final round of Golf as India will look for another medal to equal the tally procured at Beijing 2008.

PV Sindhu’s win made her the first Indian woman to win a silver medal in an individual event at the Summer games. She will have her own determination and the fantastic guidance of her mentor and badminton stalwart Pullela Gopichand to than for her brilliant performance.

A quiet day lies ahead for India at Rio and athletics might see an appearance by the respective Indian team if they qualify from their heats. The men’s relay team clocked their fastest time in 2016 and suddenly a top 5 finish seemed very likely. However, they were disqualified in their heats and the women’s relay team failed to qualify

As things stand, Sandeep Tomar lost to Viktor Lebedev of Russia in the Round of 16 and did not qualify for a Repechage. Yogeshwar Dutt remains the only medal hope from wrestling India has left. Vinesh Phogat, a massive boost for the wrestling contingent, tragically suffered an injury that prevented her from further competing in the competition.

The shock of her accident, however, was short-lived in light of Sakshi Malik's podium finish. So far, all that remains is the men’s marathon and the 65kg category Wrestling before India’s Olympic campaign comes to an end.

The golf round will be telecasted on the Star Sports network and DD National. The live feed would be available on hotstar.com as well.
