Major Dhyan Chand to be honoured with Bharat Gaurav award in British Parliament

Indian hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand will be honoured with the prestigious “Bharat Gaurav’ Lifetime achievement award by NRI organization Sanskriti Yuva Sangstha. The felicitation ceremony will be held in the British Parliament, as reported by First Post.

The award is given to an individual or group who make India proud in their line of work. Some of the previous awardees include Indian actor Manoj Kumar, Dr. Kumar Vishwas and Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh.

Dhyan Chand’s son Ashok will recieve the award on behalf of his father at the House of Commons on July 25.

Dchand, nicknamed ‘The Wizard’, scored more than 400 international goals and helped India win three consecutive gold medals at the Olympics in 1928, 1932 and 1936 respectively. He is widely considered the greatest hockey player of all time.

"It is a proud moment for the entire family. This award is a big thing for us. It translates Dada Dhyan Chand's popularity beyond India," said Kumar, as per Business Standard.

Dhyan Chand’s name has cropped up in the past for India’s highest civilian honour – The Bharat Ratna. He lost out to Sachin Tendulkar in 2014.
