After making all the right noises with the staging of the inaugural Hero Hockey India League, Hockey India (HI) took a significant forward-looking step, appointing legendary former Netherlands coach Roelant Oltmans as its High Performance Director.

Roelant Oltmans, who is already in India as coach of the Sahara India Pariwar-owned Uttar Pradesh Wizards, is expected to put in place a systematic program for the country’s senior and junior men and women teams.

Oltmans, who guided Netherlands men’s team to gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the world title two years later in Utrecht, is expected to take up the new assignment after the conclusion of the Hero Hockey India League.

He coached the Dutch team for fourteen years and is currently working with the Dutch Olympic Committee as its Performance Manager for Elite Sports. Oltmans is also an International Hockey Federation (FIH) Master Coach.

Oltmans is expected to be in the scheme of things in preparing the senior men’s and women’s teams for the upcoming FIH World League and Sultan Azlan Shah Cup to be held in February and March.
