Hockey India (HI) on Sunday affiliated Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Hockey Academy, Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab, as its new Academy Member.

The academy was set up in April by Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University. Currently, there are 50 players -- 30 girls and 20 boys -- who train at the academy, many of whom have already participated at district or state level tournaments.

The academy is also soon to lay a new artificial turf so that players can avail the facility and be better prepared for upcoming challenges at the higher levels.

"Being a new academy, the kind of work they have been doing towards development of players in their surrounding areas is commendable. We are proud of the association with Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Hockey Academy as we can see their focus towards development of hockey and our joint initiatives to grow hockey at the grassroots level and identify talent," HI secretary general Narinder Batra said.

Kanwaljeet Singh is the director of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Hockey Academy.

HI now has 26 Permanent Members, 23 Associate Members, one Member through State Olympic Associations, nine Academy Members and one Hoc-Key Member.
