The Indian senior women’s hockey team put up an outstanding performance to hold world number two Australia to a goalless draw in their final league tie of Hawke’s Bay Cup tournament being played in Hastings. The Indian eves – the lowest ranked team at number 13 – kept pace with fast moving Hockeroos and denied them from scoring off two penalty corner opportunities.

The Ritu Rain-led side had a huge opportunity to go up 1-0 in the second quarter, but Aussie goalie Rachael Lynch nullified that attempt as both teams went into half-time goalless.

Australia muffed up another PC chance and India soon won their first penalty corner but messed it up as the match went into the final quarter with the logjam continuing. Both teams settled for a 0-0 draw ahead of the quarterfinal round.

India had earlier lost to USA 2-4 and China 1-2.

The Indian women’s team have recently won the FIH Hockey World League Round 2 event in New Delhi, beating Poland 3-1 in the final. They will feature in the FIH Hockey World League Semfiinals to be held in Brasschaat, Belgium in June this year. India will be pitted alongside Australia, New Zealand, Poland and hosts Belgium in Pool B, while Pool A features Netherlands, Korea, Japan, Italy and Azerbaijan.
