Women's hockey team announced for 3rd Asian Champions Trophy

New Delhi, Oct 25 (IANS) Hockey India (HI) Friday announced its senior women’s hockey team for the third Asian Champions Trophy 2013 to be played at Kakamigahara, Japan Nov 2-9.

HI selectors B.P. Govinda, Savitry Purty and Surinder Kaur, director High Performance Roelant Oltmans, chief coach Neil Hawgood and scientific advisor Matthew Tredrea along with government observer Harbinder Singh selected the list of 18 players and six standbys during the selection trials conducted at NSNIS Patiala Oct 11.

The other participating teams in the 2013 tournament are China, Japan and Malaysia.

India will open its campaign against China Nov 2 followed by matches against Malaysia Nov 4 and Japan Nov 7.

The 18-member squad will be captained by midfielder Ritu Rani while midfielder Chanchan Devi will be the vice-captain.

The team will leave for Japan Oct 29.

The women’s team won the bronze medal at the eighth Asia Cup held in Malaysia last month.

Squad:

Goalkeepers – Rajni Etimarpu, Savita;

Defenders – Deep Grace Ekka, Deepika, Kirandeep Kaur, Sunita Lakra, Sushila Chanu, Monika, Manjeet Kaur, Amandeep;

Midfielders – Ritu Rani (captain), Namita Toppo, Chanchan Devi (vice-captain), Soundarya Yendala;

Forwards- Vandana Katariya, Rani, Poonam Rani, Ritusha Arya.

Standbys:

Sanarik Chanu – Goalkeeper, Sandeep Kaur – Defender, Lily Minz – Midfielder, Lily Chanu – Midfielder, Anuradha Devi – Forward, Anupa Barla – Forward.
