Commonwealth Games 2014: Judoka Rajwinder Kaur wins bronze in the 78 Kg category

India’s Rajwinder Kaur got the better of Kenya’s Esther Akinyi Ratugi to claim the bronze in the women’s 78-kg category of the judo competition of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Punjab girl asserted her supremacy over her Kenyan opponent and triumphed in the bronze medal play-off round. Earlier, Rajwinder Kaur lost to England’s Jodie Myers, but beat Canada’s Sophie Vaillancourt in the repechage round to make it to the bronze medal play-off round.

Another Indian - Parikhshit Kumar lost to Australia’s Jake Andrewartha in the bronze medal bout. Two other Indians missed out on a podium finish after losing their bronze medal play-off bouts. Sahil Pathania lost to New Zealand’s Tim Slyfield in the men’s 100-kg category, while Jina Devi Chongtham went down to Cameroon’s Hortense Mballa Atangana in the women’s 78-kg category.

Earlier, Sahil beat Ghana’s Raymond Normeshie in the first round, but lost to Australia’s Jason Koster in the quarterfinals. The Jalandhar boy then defeated Seychelles’ Dominic Dugasse in the repechage round to reach the bronze medal play-off round. Jina Devi Chongtham lost to Canada’s Ana Laura Portuondo in the quarterfinals of the women’s 78-kg category before featuring in the repechage round.
