Commonwealth Games 2014: Sunibala Huidrom loses bronze medal bout

India’s Sunibala Huidrom missed out on a podium finish when she lost to Scotland’s Sally Conway in the bronze play-off bout at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) hall in Glasgow. The 22-year-old Manipuri girl dressed in the white attire found the going tough against Conway as she invited three penalties even though both judokas did not score any points.The Indian were pressure to glean some points after the three penalties as Conway played safe to take the bronze.

Earlier, Sunibala fought her way to the bronze medal round amid a disappointing showing from the rest of her teammates. Sunibala earlier defeated Canada’s Monika Burgess in the repechage round of the women’s 70-kg category.

She earlier got the better of Bostwana’s Memory Zikhale in the first round, but lost in the quarterfinals to Australia’s Catherine Arscott. Another Indian women judoka, Garima Choudhary missed out on an opportunity to play in the bronze medal play-off bout of the women’s 63-kg category after she lost to England’s Katie Jemima Yeats-Brown. She defeated Cameroon’s Bibiene Fopa in the first round, but lost to Scotland’s Sarah Clark in the last four-stage.

She subsequently lost in the repechage round to England’s Katie Jemima Yeats-Brown.

Earlier, the Indian men judokas put up disappointing performances, with Balwinder Singh and Vikender Singh crashing out in the first round. Balwinder Singh lost in the first round of the men’s 73-kg to Mozambique’s Edson Madeira, while Vikender Singh went down to Cameroon’s Eric Jean Omgba Fouda in the men’s 81-kg category. Indian judokas’ performance on day two was in stark contrast to the opening day when they notched up two silver and one bronze.
