Commonwealth Games 2014: Four Indian judokas in bronze medal play-off round

Indian judokas overcame a sluggish start to put up a determined display on Saturday in Glasgow. Four judokas – two each in the same weight category battled their way into the bronze medal play-off round.

Sahil Pathania and Parikhshit Kumar reached the bronze medal play-off round of the men’s 100-kg category, while Jina Devi Chongtham and Rajiwinder Kaur made the cut in the women’s 78-kg category.

Sahil beat Ghana’s Raymond Normeshie in the first round, but lost to Australia’s Jason Koster in the quarterfinals. The Jalandhar boy then defeated Seychelles’ Dominic Dugasse in the repechage round to reach the bronze medal play-off round. Parikhshit pipped Malaysia’s Mohammed Abdul Razak in the first round, but lost to Australia’s Sam Rosser in the quarterfinals.

He then defeated Northern Ireland’s Gavin Mcneil in the repechage round to reach the bronze medal play- off round.

Jina Devi Chongtham lost to Canada’s Ana Laura Portuondo in the quarterfinals of the women’s 78-kg category and will now play in the repechage round. Rajiwinder Kaur lost to England’s Jodie Myers, but beat Canada’s Sophie Vaillancourt in the repechage round to make it to the bronze medal play-off round.

In the bronze medal play-off round, Sahil Pathania will face New Zealand’s Tim Slyfield, while Parikshit Kumar takes on Australia’s Jake Andrewartha. Rajiwinder Kaur plays Kenya’s Esther Akinyi Ratugi the bronze medal play-off round, while Jina Devi Chongtham faces Cameroon’s Hortense Mballa Atangana.
