Indian judokas put up excellent display at South Asian Judo Championships, win 10 gold medals

South Asian sports powerhouse India claimed the team title at the seventh edition of the South Asian Judo Championship, winning 10 gold medals along with one silver and as many bronze. The event was held at Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, from 12 to 13 April 2014.

India won six gold medals on the first day and added four on the final day of the championship. India also won both the team event titles, which were not added in their medal tally. Additionally, the country won one silver and one bronze to maintain its supremacy in judo in South Asia.

Pakistan came second in the medal table with three gold, three silver and six bronze medals. Hosts Nepal finished third with one gold, five silver and eight bronze medals followed by Afghanistan in the fourth position which bagged three silver and four bronze medals. Sri Lanka pocketed two silver and four bronze to finish the championship in fifth position.

On the last day of the championship, Sanju Singh of India defeated Zaki Mohsion of Afghanistan in the U-66 kg final, while Nepal’s Ramesh Magar and Muhammad Yasir Khan of Pakistan took bronze.

Meanwhile, India, Nepal and Pakistan claimed the top three spots in the women’s team event, while India, Afghanistan and Pakistan did so in the men’s category.

Deputy Prime Minister of Nepal Rt. Hon. Bamdev Gautam and National Sports Council Member Secretary Mr. Yubaraj Lama among others handed over the prizes.

A total of 59 players from Nepal, India, Pakistan Afghanistan and Sri Lanka took part in the championship.
