Nothing goes big without a controversy in the realm of combat sports, especially in the UFC. The controversy itself has been mainstreamed with the two most controversial figures occupying the stage of stardom.
Why wouldn’t it? Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor have been far more successful in generating hype for the UFC by heating up the environment where ever they collide. But the recent ruckus at the UFC 202 pre-fight press conference has left the two superstars in a bad spot in the eyes of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
The NSAC had recently issued complaints that weren’t made public. The legal representative of the NSAC has requested that the non-sportsmanship displayed by Diaz and McGregor that involved throwing of bottles and the usage of foul language and gestures, should be dealt with punishment, be it fines and legal hearing that is to be deemed just.
A hearing on the same has not been confirmed as of yet. According to the NSAC, both fighters are liable for foul or unsportsmanlike behavior regarding the commotion, the complaint alleges.
NSAC in the past has fined and punished fighters for misconduct and violent behavior at press conferences. The repercussions may not have any permanent impact but still forces the fighters to pay heavy fines. The most recent press conference battle drama that involved the NSAC taking action was between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier back in September 2014. Both the stars were forced to pay 10% of the show money. Jones shelled out $50,000(of $500,000) while Cormier had to pay $9,000(of $90,000).
Along with levy of fines, both the rivals had to do community service with Cormier being allotted 20 hours and Jones with 40 hours of duty. Conor and Nate have a history of controversies, and the show doesn’t seem to go on without one of them throwing a rock at other.
