James Faulkner: A Brief Biography

James Faulkner Biography

James Faulkner is an Australian cricketer and one of the fastest bowlers of the team. Born on 29th April 1990, Faulkner is the son of former Tasmania all-rounder Peter Faulkner and is regarded as one of the best young Australian all-rounders.

Background

Faulkner played as a leg-spin bowler during his childhood but moved onto seam bowling as he grew up. Integrating his wrist-spin into his pace bowling, he developed into a deadly bowler.

He was selected to represent the Tasmania U-19 state team, while he also captained the Tasmania U-17 team. He was a part of the Australia U19 side for the 2008 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup.

Debut

James Faulkner made his T20I debut on 1st February 2012 against India at Sydney. His One Day International (ODI) debut came a year later when he played against West Indies at Perth. Even though he struggled in T20Is, he performed very well in the ODIs.

In Australia’s Ashes campaign in 2013, Faulkner was called upon for his first test match. With six wickets in the drawn match at the Oval, and an impressive 25 low down the order, Faulkner impressed on his debut.

Rise to glory

Faulkner’s performance in the first class cricket was consistent and his regular knocks earned him national team call ups. James picked up 39 wickets at an average of 20.33 in the 2012-13 Shield Season, including three five-wicket hauls. He scored 444 runs at an average of 34.15, showing his prowess as an all rounder.

He put up a stellar performance in the final against Queensland, taking four wickets and guiding his team to a target of 446 which eventually won them the match. Owing to his composed demeanor and all rounder skills, he became an inseparable part of the ODI team.

Faulkner hit his maiden ODI century off just 57 balls against India on 2 November 2013 in Bengaluru. His knock entered the record books as the second fastest century by any Australian batsman (after Glenn Maxwell).

In the 2015 Cricket World Cup final against New Zealand, Faulkner took three wickets by giving away 39 runs in his nine over spell to help Australia fold the opposition for just 183 runs. Australia eventually chased the target to win the title with Faulkner being named the Man of the Match.

Club Career

Faulkner has had a successful stint at the club levels. He has played in the Indian Premier League for Rajasthan Royals, Pune Warriors India, Kings XI Punjab and Gujarat Lions. He also plays for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.

Surprisingly, the all-rounder remained unsold at the 2018 IPL auctions. He had a base price of Rs. 2 crore.
