Philipp Lahm: A Brief Biography

Philipp Lahm Biography


Philipp Lahm is a former German footballer who played at full-back for both his club, FC Bayern Munchen and the German National Team.


Born on 11 November 1983, Lahm remains one of the most inspirational footballers in the world.


He has won eight Bundesliga titles, six German cups, a Champions League and the FIFA World Cup in 2014.


Background


Lahm started his career in 1995 when he joined the youth team of a domestic club, FT Gern Munchen.


He had already won 15 caps for his country before his career with Bayern Munich began.


At the age of 11, he made his way in Bayern Munich youth team. In 2001, Lahm played for Bayern Munich II against FC Wacker on 25 August 2001, which ended at the score of 2-1.


He moved to VfB Stuttgart on loan and returned to Bayern Munich in 2005.


Debut


Philipp made his international debut in February 2004, where he was Man of the Match in a 2-1 German win over Croatia.


Rise to Glory


Lahm's opening goal in the 2006 tournament elevated Germany's position and began their quest for glory on home soil in the perfect manner.


However, the crowning glory for Lahm came in 2013 and 2014, when as captain, he led Bayern Munich and Germany to the UEFA Champions League and FIFA World Cup title respectively.


Captaincy


Philipp Lahm was chosen captain for Bayern Munich in 2012 and under him they won the treble (Bundesliga, DFB Pokal & UEFA Champions League) in 2013.


He was also the German captain when Die Mannschaft won the FIFA World Cup in 2014.

He holds the record for eight German Championship titles.


He has played 113 matches for Germany and stands at fifth position in the all-time appearance list.


He ranks third in all time rankings for holding 249 Bundesliga victories.


He holds an individual accolade of Silver Laurel Leaf, Germany’s highest award for his achievement in sports in 2006, 2010, and 2014.


Retirement


After a spectacular career, Philipp retired from the German National Team after Euro 2016. He played 113 matches for Germany national team. He called it a day in his club career at the end of the 2016-17 season, after leading Bayern to yet another Bundesliga title.
