Rohit Sharma Career

Rohit Sharma started his international career in June 2007 with an ODI match against Ireland, after which he was included in the young Indian side for the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa. India won the tournament by defeating Pakistan in the final.

Although Rohit became a regular in the limited-over formats, he missed out on the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squad. Part of the Deccan Chargers (Hyderabad) in the IPL initially, Rohit later led the Mumbai Indians to five titles.

After India’s crushing defeat in the 2021 T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli gave up the captaincy in the white-ball formats, and Rohit Sharma replaced him. A year later, Kohli stepped down from the Test captaincy as well. Thus, Rohit became India’s all-format skipper.

Rohit Sharma Domestic Career

Rohit Sharma made his List A debut in March 2005, for West Zone against Central Zone in Deodhar Trophy. In the same tournament, Sharma scored an unbeaten inning of 142 in 123 balls against North Zone at Udaipur. This allowed Sharma to represent India A at Abu Dhabi against Australia. Sharma was also named in the 30-man list for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy tournament but failed to make the squad.

Sharma made his India A debut against New Zealand A in a first-class match at Darwin in July 2006. Months later, Rohit made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in the 2006–07 season and was a part of the victorious Mumbai team. Sharma has been a part of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy team for his entire domestic career. Rohit was appointed team captain ahead of Mumbai for the 2013–14 season after the retirement of Ajith Agarkar.

Rohit Sharma IPL Career

Rohit Sharma has had one of the most successful and illustrious IPL careers ever. Sharma debuted in the IPL in 2008. He was signed by the Deccan Chargers franchise, based in Hyderabad. His contract got him a whopping $750,000 a year. Although he was selected as a batsman, he proved his worth as a bowler too as he took a hat-trick against Mumbai Indians. He dismissed Abhisekh Nayar, Harbhajan Singh, and JP Duminy to bag his first hattrick.

In the next IPL auction, Sharma was bought by Mumbai Indians for a sum of $2 million. He has been with the Mumbai-based franchise ever since. Sharma has scored over 6,000 runs and is the fourth-highest scorer after Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, and David Warner.

Rohit fetched more than 2 million USD in the 2011 IPL auction as Mumbai Indians were keen to have the services of the local lad. The rest is history. Rohit replaced Ricky Ponting as captain of MI in the middle of IPL 2013 and has won five titles with the franchise to emerge as the most successful captain in the history of the competition.

Rohit has scored 6472 runs in the IPL. As of 2024, Rohit has been part of six IPL-winning teams — Deccan Chargers in 2009 and Mumbai Indians in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

Rohit has smashed a total of 272 maximums, the second most sixes in IPL history. His highest score is an unbeaten 109 against the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012.

Rohit Sharma International Career

Rohit Sharma's international career has been full of ups and downs. His journey of becoming the captain of the Indian cricket team was not easy. He took charge of the Indian team toward the end of his career.

Rohit has performed consistently and with great maturity in the white-ball formats for India. However, he struggled in Tests initially, making his debut in 2013. It took him almost eight years to cement his position in India’s Test side.

Rohit Sharma is gearing up to lead India in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Rohit Sharma ODI Career

Rohit Sharma made his international debut for India at a one-day match against Ireland in Belfast on 23 June 2007. He used to bat at number seven and didn't get a chance to bat in India's nine-wicket victory.

After which Sharma was occasionally dropped from the team but finally made it back every single time. Sharma had a disastrous 2012 when he scored only 168 runs in the whole calendar year.

Sharma started opening the Indian innings with Shikhar Dhawan in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, and the gamble turned out to be a huge success. Rohit Sharma's opening partnership with Shikhar Dhawan is the second most successful opening partnership for India after Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar.

Rohit also plays well in partnership with the no.3 batsman Virat Kohli.

Kohli-Rohit pair has an average of over 59.76 in ODIs. On 13 November 2014, Sharma registered the highest individual score in a single inning. He scored a mammoth 264 from 173 deliveries against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Sharma was the recipient of the Golden Bat award for scoring the most number of runs in ICC World Cup 2019.

Rohit Sharma Test Career

Rohit Sharma was never considered to be a Test cricketer. Rohit made his Test Debut in November 2013 against West Indies. It was the same series when Sachin Tendulkar retired. Sharma made his Test debut at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He scored 177 in his debut match. It was the second-best score on debut by an Indian just Shikhar Dhawan's score of 187. He scored another century in the very next match.

Sharma was however dropped from the Test team due to inconsistency in performance. Sharma however was selected for the 2018–19 tour of Australia. He became a part of the first-ever Indian team to win a test series against Australia on Australian soil.

Rohit's initial Test journey was sporadic as he struggled for consistency. But the situation changed during the home Test series against South Africa when Rohit was played as an opener and slammed 529 runs in four innings at an average of 132.35. He scored three centuries with the best score of 212.

Rohit has since cemented his place as a regular opener in the longest format, playing several wonderful knocks, including the 127 against England in the 2021 Oval Test to register his first overseas Test hundred. He became the permanent captain of the Indian Test side in 2022 after Kohli stepped down.
