International polo returns to Manipur after 11-year hiatus

International polo returns to the north-east state of Manipur after a 11-year hiatus as the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association (MHRPA) braces up to host the 6th Manipur Polo International at Mapal Kangjeibung (pologround) in Imphal from November 24 to 29.

MHRPA officials told that four foreign countries – England, Germany, France and Thailand will take part in the six-day championship. The championship would also feature an Indian Polo Association (IPA) team. Two Manipur teams would take part as India ‘A’ and India ‘B’ teams in the championship.

The championship would adhere to the Indian Polo Association (IPA) rules and will be an open handicap championship.

The organizers have further intimated that for the first time Mapal Kangjeibung is spruced up to meet the desired international standards. The renovation work on the playing arena, which started in the last week of May, is nearing completion. Besides the playing arena, the galleries and the pavilion at Mapal Kangjeibung have also been given a facelift

Nicholas Colquhoun-Denvers, chairman Hurlingham Polo Association – the World Polo controlling governing body – is expected to grace the event. The organizers also informed that around 80 ponies will be required for the tournament.
