Sunderland have sacked veteran manager Martin O’Neill just hours after a hard fought 1-0 loss against Manchester United on Saturday.

Sunderland lie precariously at the 16th position in the English Premier League table, with 31 points from as many games and just 1 point clear of the relegation zone. Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa, at 30 points each, have a game in hand.

Sunderland earlier released the following statement:

“Sunderland AFC has announced that it has parted company with manager Martin O’Neill this evening.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Martin and wishes him well for the future. An announcement will be made in the coming days regarding a successor.”

O’Neill managed Sunderland in 62 games since taking over in December 2011 winning 21 and drawing 20 of them. The 61-year-old Northern Irishman was in charge at the Stadium of Light for just 16 months having succeeded Steve Bruce in December 2011.

Sunderland have now gone eight games without a win, picking up just two points in the process, with just seven games remaining in the Premier League season.

O’Neill becomes the fifth top-flight manager to lose his job this season following the sackings of Roberto Di Matteo at Chelsea, Mark Hughes at Queens Park Rangers, Nigel Adkins from Southampton and Reading’s Brian McDermott.

Bookmakers quickly made Di Matteo the favourite to take over with Hughes the second-favourite.

New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder was admitted to Christchurch hospital after a reported late night assault near a food outlet.

According to reports by the local Fairfax Media, Ryder is understood to have a fractured skull and his condition is critical. The incident appears to have taken place shortly just after midnight at Papanui Road.

The local police is expected to have a press conference shortly to throw more light on the matter.

Former captain and close friend of Ryder, Ross Taylor had this to say on Twitter shortly after the incident.

Ryder played for Wellington yesterday in the Ford Trophy preliminary final against Canterbury in Christchurch.

The 28-year-old was due to fly out the next day to participate in the IPL with the Delhi Daredevils.

Tottenham Hotspur have brokered a deal to sign Germany U-21 captain Lewis Holtby immediately in the January transfer window instead of the free transfer deal in the summer that they had earlier agreed with Schalke.

WWE Hall of Fame legend Hulk Hogan has aired his views on Wednesday’s controversial ball-boy incident  insisting that Chelsea player Eden Hazard should have ‘kicked him harder’.

Eden Hazard was sent off by referee Chris Foy after it appeared that Hazard had kicked ballboy Charlie Morgan while attempting to get the ball back into play.

However, Hogan – currently in the UK as part of TNA Impact Wrestling’s Maximum Impact V – says that the 17-year-old, incidentally the son of Swansea chairman Michael Morgan, got off easy.

“The young guy on the sidelines may as well have thrown the ball into the crowd.”

“That would have been more convincing and would really have held up the action.”

“But he might have got his butt kicked even more,” said the former WCW and WWE champion.

“I don’t think [Hazard] kicked him hard enough. [Morgan] shouldn’t be interfering with play like that.”

The 59-year-old veteran went on to give his views diving in football, ”I know soccer players are often accused of taking dives, but you wouldn’t get away with play acting like that in a wrestling ring.”

In an amazing turn of events, Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has had his red card that he received against Arsenal overturned by the FA.

A statement released by the FA said:

“An Independent Regulatory Commission has today upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal regarding Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany. The defender was dismissed for serious foul play during his side’s match against Arsenal on Sunday 13 January 2013. As a result, Kompany’s three-match suspension has been withdrawn with immediate effect.”

This will come as a sigh of relief for Roberto Mancini, as it means that the Belgian will not get a three-match suspension as is the case in a straight red card.

It may be recalled that referee Mike Dean had deemed Kompany’s challenge on Jack Wilshere as dangerous and worthy of a red card.
The Belgian was in tears while walking off the pitch, and shortly after the match posted the following tweets from his official account.
