Curry (Golden State Warriors) versus Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs)

This is one of the rare combinations of point guard matchups that any NBA fan wouldn’t want to miss. Parker is a genius when it comes to shooting from the perimeter while Curry, when he is in his red-hot zone, doesn’t miss – AT ALL. Game 1 saw Curry clearly have the better game but ever since that, Parker has leapfrogged backed into the contest. One thing Parker has an advantage is experience and that clearly shows when Parker keeps the ball moving across the court whereas Curry often dribbles singlehandedly to the front court and takes a shot. If Golden State wishes to get closer to the NBA Finals, the franchise needs its red hot sharpshooter to go all guns blazing. But before that, Stephen Curry and the Warriors need to watch out for a resurgent Tony Parker who is in the form of his life. A deciding factor could be the people Curry or Parker can pass the ball to. Think about it: Tim Duncan versus Andrew Bogut? No offense to the Australian’s talent but quiet boy Timmy clearly has it there.

Carmelo Anthony (New York Knicks) versus Paul George (Indiana Pacers)

Solely in terms of talent, Carmelo Anthony is a player as good as LeBron James, if not better in certain traits. In terms of execution and play making, Anthony has numerous ladders to climb to reach that mantle. Who does he come up against in this round – a sporadically streaked Paul George and the Pacers? While both players have the capability to keep the scoreboard ticking, it is the number of shots these stars take to achieve which worries many fans. Paul George’s field goal percentage is almost the same as Carmelo’s but the New Yorker has the edge in terms of free throws and three points made. Carmelo enjoys the front seat in terms of the offense but the entire basketball fraternity knows how much his defense can come into question. And if the Knicks wish to nick the Pacers out of the Eastern Conference semifinals, Melo needs to guard Paul George tightly and score better than a .39 FG%.

Serge ibaka (Oklahoma City Thunder) versus Zach Randolph (Memphis Grizzlies)

The Memphis Grizzlies are up 3-1 in the playoff series and it’s hugely thanks to the big men duo of Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. While Gasol is clearly the favorite to matchup against a rather less useful Kendrick Perkins, Randolph has a strong matchup against Serge Ibaka. The man from Congo has lost so much confidence since back to back terrible shooting nights which saw the Thunder slip up their home court advantage. Ibaka currently shoots a pathetic 31% from the field compared to Randolph’s near 55% and is outmatched in the rebounding sector as well. But, if the Thunder is going to lodge a comeback in this series, they definitely need a more energetic Serge Ibaka to bounce back and play the defense that often grabbed him headlines. It’s evident the offense belongs to Randolph but if there is a category Ibaka can matchup Randolph in, it’s in defense. It is going to be hard to come back from a 3-1 deficit but all isn’t lost yet for the Thunder or Serge Ibaka.

Joakim Noah (Chicago Bulls) versus Chris Bosh (Miami Heat)

Before this playoff series against Miami began, questions such as these were raised for the Chicago Bulls: LeBron James versus whom… Dwayne Wade versus whom… Chris Bosh versus whom… Let’s look at the talent the Bulls can line up in their starting five to beat this trio: Nate Robinson (nah, he can’t ball like Game 1 every night), Jimmy Butler (you gotta be kiddin me?), Marco Belinelli (seriously, the guy makes headlines for his mischievous gestures than his three point shooting), Carlos Boozer (out of his prime) and Joakim Noah (yes, finally someone to compare!)

Noah’s contribution to this injury plagued Chicago side is immensely undervalued. He is Tom Thibodeau’s go to guy, the team’s new found (in fact, was omnipresent) leader and the most underrated center in the game of basketball today. Think about this: Noah has gone for six double doubles this postseason and the most crucial one was in the Game 1 steal at South Beach. It is almost certain the Miami Heat will progress from this matchup against the Bulls but if the Chicagoan franchise wishes to put up any fight (something they haven’t in the past three games), Joakim Noah has got to spearhead it. Chris Bosh, on the other hand, enjoys the luxury of playing in the most talented basketball side of this decade and can afford to slip up. While he won’t matchup against Noah in terms of rebounding and shot blocking, his offensive numbers will continue to be superior considering the production he receives.

The 2013 NBA Draft is scheduled to be held on June 27, 2013 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The lottery – in which the teams who had missed the playoffs or teams who hold the draft participate to determine the draft order in the NBA Draft – will take place on May 21, 2013.

Here is a look at the top five prospects of this year’s class:

5. Michael Carter-Williams, Syracuse

Year: Sophomore | Position: Point Guard | Height: 6’ 6” | Weight: 185 lbs

<a rel="prettyPhoto[]" href="http://static.sportskeeda.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/165882025-1643624.jpg" title="Michael Carter-Williams #1 of the Syracuse Orange reacts in the first half against the Michigan Wolverines during the 2013 NCAA Men's Final Four Semifinal at the Georgia Dome on April 6, 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Michael Carter-Williams #1 of the Syracuse Orange. (Getty Images)

Carter-Williams began his second season under Coach Jim Boeheim with 10 minutes per game experience in his first year at Syracuse University. His second season was absolutely stellar with his size advantage helping him ease past other point guards. He helped guide the Orange to a Final Four appearance, where Trey Burke and Michigan cut his dream run short. While he leaves a huge hole in Syracuse with Brandon Triche and James Southerland also graduating, MCW will be a delight to watch in the NBA. An average NBA point guard is listed at 6’ 1” which gives Carter-Williams a good 5 inches to work with. As years tickle down in the NBA, Carter-Williams will weigh in at a good 195 pounds.

Strengths: Drive-ins, agility, good shot creator and a ball hawk. | Weaknesses: Sporadic 3-point shooting ability, man marking and turnovers.

4. Anthony Bennett, University of Nevada at Las Vegas

Year: Freshman | Position: Forward | Height: 6’ 8” | Weight: 240 lbs

<a rel="prettyPhoto[]" href="http://static.sportskeeda.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/158798964-1643624.jpg" title="CHAPEL HILL, NC - DECEMBER 29: Anthony Bennett #15 of the UNLV Rebels reacts after a basket during their game against the North Carolina Tar Heels at Dean Smith Center on December 29, 2012 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Anthony Bennett #15 of the UNLV Rebels. (Getty Images)

Fresh out of high school, Bennett took no time adjusting to the NCAA system. Incredibly hard to guard under the rim, Bennett’s intensity is unmatchable. Bennett shoots nearly 40 % from the 3-point arc and a stellar 53% from the field, which makes him a deadly power forward who has versatility all over the court. His 7’1” wingspan more than makes up for his relative short height and his athleticism can never be called into question considering he is quick on fast breaks. It will be interesting to see how he recuperates day in and out in the NBA with a more physically demanding league. In the NBA, there would most likely be a mismatch involved with Bennett where he would be the adversary unlike college where the complete opposite happened. Bennett is set to undergo shoulder surgery, but that shouldn’t hinder his prospects of being a top 10 pick.

Strengths: Athleticism, paint shooting, efficiency and ability to draw fouls. | Weaknesses: Injuries, consistency in defence and grabbing rebounds.

3. Trey Burke, University of Michigan

Year: Sophomore | Position: Point Guard | Height: 6’ 0” | Weight: 190 lbs.

<a rel="prettyPhoto[]" href="http://static.sportskeeda.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/166102736-1643624.jpg" title=" Trey Burke #3 of the Michigan Wolverines reacts in the secon dhalf against the Louisville Cardinals during the 2013 NCAA Men's Final Four Championship at the Georgia Dome on April 8, 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Trey Burke #3 of the Michigan Wolverines. (Getty Images)

Trey Burke was arguably the best player this past season. A consensus All-American and a clean scoop of all the individual honours confirmed that Trey Burke might be the most talented player out of this draft class. Hadn’t it been for the lack of need for a point guard in the NBA today, Burke would easily be a top 2 pick. He shoots, swirls for a layup, is clutch in the 4th and guards like no man’s business. A true gem of a recruit, he led the Michigan Wolverines all the way to the Championship game where they threw away a double digit lead. Moreover, his assist to turnover ratio raises envious eyes in the NBA – 6.8:2.2. Any team that wants a player to shoot out of a dead ball situation better pick this man considering nobody shoots the ball from a single dribble like this Ohioan native.

Strengths: 3-point shooting, pick and roll, play call, warrior spirit and speed. | Weaknesses: Size, long range passing, transition and isolation play call.

2. Ben McLemore, University of Kansas

Very rarely does a rookie get drafted as a franchise player in a draft. Anthony Davis was one; Kyrie Irving held the distinction in his draft class. Ben McLemore has the potential to be the franchise player of his class. His leadership was instrumental in Kansas’ Elite 8 run and his shooting ability is the best of this draft class. A prototypical 2-guard with assets of speed, agility and a lethal jump shot, any NBA coach would love to have this youngster in his team. He is also highly motivated and Coach Bill Self from Kansas labels him as a pure wonder to work with. Is he NBA ready? Of course, he is.

Strengths: Shooting, composure, athleticism, impeccable basketball form and IQ. | Weaknesses: Has to learn to pass up more contested shots, more aggressiveness needed to make the cut in the NBA and ball handling.

1. Nerlens Noel, University of Kentucky

Year: Freshman | Position: Power Forward | Height: 6’ 11” | Weight: 225 lbs.

<a rel="prettyPhoto[]" href="http://static.sportskeeda.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/157578248-1643624.jpg" title="Nerlens Noel #3 of the Kentucky Wildcats dunks the ball during the game against the Samford Bulldogs at Rupp Arena on December 4, 2012 in Lexington, Kentucky.
Nerlens Noel #3 of the Kentucky Wildcats. (Getty Images)

Noel might be the predicted number 1 pick in this upcoming draft but concerns still rise over his injury problems from a torn ACL in mid-February and Kentucky’s inability to qualify for the NCAA tournament despite being defending champions. On the day of the draft, Noel could still be bagged as the number 1 pick but there wouldn’t be a surprise if his stock does plummet down by then. However, on his given day, Noel can be so hard to guard considering he is the most gifted athlete in this draft class. Also, his defence can prove crucial in determining his length of stay in the NBA. Experts compare him to Dikembe Mutombo but only time will tell if he actual will live up to that tag. There is no doubt that Noel has the potential but his untimely injuries and lack of leadership might need to change for him to have any effect in the big leagues. If Anthony Davis was a terror in shot blocking, expect no less from this Kentucky product as well.

Strengths: Shot blocking, strong work ethic, rebounding and versatility in the back court. | Weaknesses: Undeveloped offensive game, inability to create shots for himself and lack of fluidity with the ball.

The state of Oklahoma has two renowned collegiate sports teams: the Oklahoma Sooners and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. For years, the state couldn’t boast a professional sports team. Now, there is another story. The Sonics from Seattle moved to Oklahoma and the talent this franchise now boasts includes Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka.

When any team goes to Oklahoma to play the Thunder, they better get their ear plugs on in the 4th quarter when ear deafening chants of “OKC” or “Kay-DEEEEEEEE!” go wild. If OKC do show up in the NBA Finals once again, it will be thanks to a resurgent Durant but also in huge favour to their fans screaming in unison. No professional team gets this much undivided attention from an entire city like they do.

4. Oracle Arena, Golden State Warriors

<a rel="prettyPhoto[]" href="http://static.sportskeeda.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/137252786-1640963.jpg" title=" A general view during the Golden State Warriors game against the Utah Jazz at Oracle Arena on January 7, 2012 in Oakland, California.
A general view during a Golden State Warriors game at Oracle Arena. (Getty Images)

Not many hear a whole lot about the Oracle. Till the team landed Stephen Curry in 2009, Golden State was a shadowy basketball environment in terms of talent. But never in terms of loyal fan bases. Two years ago, the Warriors weren’t in contention for the playoffs yet the fans showed up in high numbers. Today, the team is threatening to knock the Thunder and the Spurs off their perch.

The oldest arena in the NBA has the some of the best fans to host; for this town has never seen this much spotlight since the Oakland Raiders swept the Super Bowl in the early 80s. If any team shows up at the Oracle Arena expecting a vacation, they better get their heads straight. The Warriors have a resounding David Lee, an impeccable Steph Curry and an invincible fan base at the Oracle.

3. TD Garden, Boston Celtics

<a rel="prettyPhoto[]" href="http://static.sportskeeda.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/81498758-1640963.jpg" title="BOSTON - JUNE 08: A general view of Game Two of the 2008 NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics on June 8, 2008 at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
A general view of the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. (Getty Images)

The city of Boston has a wealth of sporting heritage to brag about. The Bruins are Stanley Cup playoff perennials, the Patriots are supreme conference powerhouses in American Football, the Red Sox are lodging a comeback trail to dominance and the Celtics are the most decorated franchise in NBA history. A team that shows up at the Garden doesn’t just match up against the likes of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo. The opposition is ravelled by a city proud of its sporting heritage – certainly proud of the prestige the Celtics have garnered.

In 2008, when the Celtics won a championship after nearly three decades, the games at the Garden proved immeasurably decisive. The Celtics lost almost every away game and relied on their fan base at the Garden to help them break the championship drought. Imagine this: KG’s motivation, Pierce’s clutch factor and Rondo’s versatility, now feed that off a rousing crowd at the TD Garden – not many teams can match up here.

2. The Madison Square Garden, New York Knicks

The Yankees are the most revered in the city of New York but even a baseball faithful would admit the Madison Square Garden is the city’s biggest sporting asset. The MSG isn’t named “The Mecca of Basketball” for nothing. Spike Lee and other Knicks faithful show up in high numbers cheering the Knicks till the last whistle. Legends are made at this arena and careers are defined. The rafters at MSG don’t boast as many championships as the Celtics or the LA Lakers but there is a guarantee of competition.

If Carmelo Anthony is one of most clutch players in the NBA, he sure would not be in contention hadn’t it been for the pumping reception he receives for each of his shots. Yankees are the city’s venerated but deep down, an everyday New Yorker knows where to go for a full sporting experience. For at the MSG is present the aura of a true sporting coliseum.

1. The United Center, Chicago Bulls

Before you read any further, watch this video to see why everyone outside the Windy City fears playing at the United Center:

In the 2000′s, the Bulls fans outnumbered any other franchise in attendance and in 2013; they are the top once again. Michael Jordan built this franchise through his 6 championship wins but today, Derrick Rose and co. run it. The 2000′s saw a drought in playoff runs yet, the fans didn’t fail to show up. When D-Rose hurt his knee in early 2012, hopes were lost – anywhere but Chicago. The fans still flocked at the United Center to cheer their team that bagged the number 1 seed in the East in 2012.

“The Madhouse on Madison” hosts the loudest, most enthusiastic and most dedicated basketball fans in the country. While a title run is eminent, just to imagine what the atmosphere would be like to relive the glories of the 90′s seems so daunting for any team to face up against the Bulls.

5. Festus Ezeli, Golden State Warriors

Golden State has the most potential to make best use of in the coming years. Stephen Curry is young, Draymond Green and Harrison Barnes are being nurtured by Mark Jackson and then there is this someone named Festus Ezeli who looks ferociously monstrous just to be up against. Despite his injured knee, Ezeli has helped the Warriors with his shot blocking and mobility. He is agile in the paint, reads the offense well and on a given day, can shut down other big men in the league.

Although JaVale McGee and Kosta Koufos of the Denver Nuggets overpowered him in terms of skill set, Ezeli still has a way to go in the playoffs and could be the unsung difference maker. Stay close to the screens and watch out for this big man’s defence in the upcoming matchup against the experienced San Antonio Spurs.

4. Pablo Prigioni, New York Knicks

The man from Argentina was a huge threat to the Boston Celtics frontline. Averaging nearly 2.5 steals a game; Prigioni has adjusted well to the line-up when put in for Jason Kidd. One thing Prigioni could improve his rating by is working on his poor shooting especially within the arc. A 27.8 FG % makes any player look below average especially in a team of sharp shooters like Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith. Mike Woodson doesn’t expect Pablo Prigioni to go and put up 5 PPG and 5 APG numbers. But the coach would most definitely need the Argentinean’s help with a raging hot Anthony and the Knicks should they make a deep run in the playoffs. They meet the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference semi-finals.

3. Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors

Just imagine the damage the Warriors will cause in the league with a red hot Curry and David Lee with a more mature trio of Harrison Barnes, Festus Ezeli and Draymond Green in the upcoming years? The Michigan State product drafted in the second round has been energetic, bustling and lively. In fact, when Green does come on to play, the tempo pumps up and the crowd go crazy. To add to his entertaining side, Green’s stats speak high of him as well. 50% from the arc, 5.6 PPG and 3.4 RPG, Green has elevated his game in the playoffs to help the Warriors register a first playoff series win in over 10 years.

2. Pat Beverly, Houston Rockets

We know who the most hated figure in Oklahoma is. It is indeed a shame that a player’s first year in the league will be remembered for Russell Westbrook’s injury. But on a true basketball sense, Beverly has been the revelation of this year’s playoffs. Everyone expected James Harden to show up. Many hoped Jeremy Lin(sanity) would make big until the chest injury sidelined him. But only a select few predicted the Beverly factor in Houston’s stomp surge against the Thunder to force Game 6. They would eventually lose the series 4-2.

Beverly is a beast when it comes to drive in to the paint especially against a slower Derek Fisher and Reggie Jackson. He is also an incredible defender when it comes to dodging the renowned OKC Thunder pick and roll. Stacking up 13 PPG and 5 APG, Beverly should be a great sophomore to watch in the league in the 2013-14 season.

1. Harrison Barnes, Golden State Warriors

Harrison headed into 2011-12 college season as the best prospect available in the 2012 draft class. He was good but far from his best. He headed into the NBA playoffs as the best rookie solely in terms of talent. So far, he hasn’t disappointed one bit. In a team loaded with shooters like Curry and Lee, it is hard to imagine a rookie averaging nearly 16 PPG in the playoffs. Well, that is Barnes for you – the product from North Carolina whose athleticism hasn’t been threatened yet. Barnes is also making 1 out of every 2 shots from the field and 1 out of every three from the arc. For a rookie in the playoffs, those are laudable stats there.

In Game 5 against the Nuggets, Harrison Barnes shot for 23 points and picked up 9 rebounds where his contribution clearly showcased his sometimes undervalued talent. Barnes has one experience that not many other lottery picks get – a deep run in the playoffs in his first season. It will be interesting to see what Barnes comes up with for next year.

South Africa’s Oscar Pistorius, nicknamed ‘Blade Runner’, remarks on how his upbringing was no different than his brother, Carl. Mama Pistorius did know how to motivate her son who finished 2nd in his 400m heat at London ’12.

·Basketball: “My family used to call me an oversized kid and I think that’s pretty accurate in some ways.”

Jeremy Lin, commenting on his tall structure for Asian Americans who are stereotypically expected to have a shorter frame – clearly Linpossible is nothing!

Cricket: “I actually feel very embarrassed because I rejected him as a fast bowler. I think I did him and the game of cricket a favour.”

Dennis Lillee recalls rejecting Sachin Tendulkar at a MRF Pace Foundation trial in 1987 after which the Little Master went onto pursue batting more seriously. Indeed Mr. Lillee, a sincerely thank you from the entire nation of India.

Cycling: “There comes a point in every man’s life when he has to say, ‘Enough is enough.’ For me, that time is now.”

Lance Armstrong announcing he would not contest the doping charges against him and his former cycling teams, which brought a depressing end to allegations against him. Armstrong was not only a legend in cycling but for the sporting fraternity, given his courageous comebacks from Cancer to win 7 Tour De Frances. What a shame for the sport of cycling constantly haunted by doping – Floyd Landis, Lance Armstrong, several more top names.

Football: “Jose is very intelligent, he has charisma, his players play for him, and he is a good looking guy. I think I have most of those things, too, apart from his good looks.”

Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, jokingly remarks on Real Madrid’s manager, Jose Mourinho when asked to compare himself to the Portuguese at Harvard Business School.

Formula One: “If the sword breaks, attack with the hands. If they cut off your hands, push the enemy with your shoulders, even with your teeth.”

F1 Championship runner-up Fernando Alonso about his crunch battles with eventual winner and three-time champion, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull. In a controversy fuelled racing season, no quote served more aptnesses to the nail biting contests as much as Alonso’s.

Swimming: “I did everything I wanted to. I finished my career the way I wanted to.”

American swimmer Michael Phelps after retiring with 18 gold medals, which makes him the most successful Olympian of all time – 22 medals, 18 golds, numerous world records – will there ever be a greater swimmer than the Baltimore Bullet?

Tennis: “The only one that I need to worry about is Vishnu. The poor boy is 307 in the world and I don’t even know if he has grasscourt shoes.”

Leander Paes speaks about his partner Vishnu Vardhan, making it clear what his biggest worry is before the Summer London Olympics. The team captain was earlier paired with Mahesh Bhupati before the latter requested to change his partner that sparked a huge controversy in the Tennis world. What a pity, neither team achieved something satisfactorily!

Point Guard: Damian Lillard, Portland Trail Blazers

Lillard isn’t just the best rookie in the league but might certainly make the case for being the top player in the Portland side. Not to shoo credit away from LaMarcus Aldridge but Lillard is playing the position of point guard like a true primo. In a class where hype surrounded the Kentucky stars, Lillard certainly has made his case to be the best draft pick of 2012. Apart from his shooting decisions, Lillard is a caliber drive-in specialist and notable passer. However, consistency is something Damian Lillard needs to work on considering he shoots 4 out of 20 in a night against the Lakers after a stellar performance against the Sacramento Kings.

Shooting Guard: Alexey Shved, Minnesota Timberwolves

Shved was the least expected guard to lead the Timberwolves side. Roy was back in the off-season and Rubio was declared fit. Add that to Kevin Love’s shooting prowess and Andrei Kirilenko’s versatility, Rick Adelman would clearly not have needed Shved’s services in abundance before the season began.

Fortunately for Shved, his chances came in when Rubio and Roy lost their fitness battles once again. Shved is averaging 11 PPG, 3 RPG and 5 APG in his first season and is a balanced, creative workforce that any tactical coach would love to have. His three-point shooting has been off lately but he is still a dream to work with since he can quite easily fit in any positions at the arc.

Small Forward: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Charlotte Bobcats

I saw MKG play in college and to say the least, he hasn’t transformed his playing style significantly. He is still mean, aggressive, fouls at ease and would be absolutely intolerant guarding clutch shooters. In fact, if this article was written two weeks ago, Dion Waiters would be my first choice at this position.

But the game against the Hornets changed my opinion of MKG, especially considering he carries this team on his back despite the likes of Kemba Walker and Ben Gordon still being on the roster. Walker and Gordon are terrific shooters and handlers of the ball but do not possess the killer instinct as much as Kidd-Gilchrist does. When games don’t go his way, Kidd-Gilchrist is ready to step up his game, play defensive roles, shoots the ball less and in clutch situations, is all over the court showcasing his commitment.

22 points against the Hornets and Davis, 11-14 shooting and impeccable defense against Eric Gordon, seals the deal for MKG heading into 2013. It’s going to be close for him though – Dion Waiters seems to be finally getting a hold of his three point shots and Beal is having few decent nights.

Power Forward: Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets

The distinction of being the first overall pick has boosted Davis’ game coming from a renowned Kentucky program. He is shooting a lot more in the NBA, as expected of him. When he does bucket 10-12 points per game, his rebounding has been sound with an average of nearly 9 RPG this season. Not to forget, his blocks boost his quest for the Rookie of the Year award. 14.7 PPG, 8.5 RPG and 1.9 BPG with a PER of nearly 21, Davis is certifying his label as the next Tim Duncan of the league. Don’t be surprised if he blocks more often in the coming weeks as his troubled ankle heals.

Center: Andre Drummond, Detroit Pistons

Drummond’s PER is higher than Davis’ despite averages of 7 PPG and RPG. The reason being his importance to the Pistons’ has been more significantly capitalized on than Davis’ derailed Hornets. The Pistons are also on a 4-1 run in the final weeks of December and Drummond has played a vital role to this team’s on slot back into the Eastern Conference’s top 10. Be it dominance in the paint, explosiveness in physique or the partnership with Kyle Singler, Drummond’s stock will rise continuously as the season goes.

ALL-NBA SECOND ROOKIE TEAM:

Point Guard: Terrence Ross, Toronto Raptors

Shooting Guard: Dion Waiters, Cleveland Cavaliers

Small Forward: Harrison Barnes, Golden State Warriors

Power Forward: Jared Sullinger, Boston Celtics

Center: Tyler Zeller, Cleveland Cavaliers

Jamaican sprinter and reigning Olympic Champion Usain Bolt, after retaining his 100 and 200 metre Olympic title as he promised. Bolt, in the lead up to London, had suggested that he would make this announcement if he does successfully defend his Olympic titles. So we clearly guess Usian is a virtuous man who holds onto his promises!

Basketball: “It’s about damn time.”

Miami Heat forward LeBron James, after winning that elusive NBA title which has haunted him for years. Since his controversial move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat, James was questioned for his killer instinct and performance in clutch situations given the Mavericks just edged him and the Heat just a year ago. Quite rightly – Mr. James, it is about “damn time” you won that title too.

Boxing: “Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out, let’s fight May 5th and give the world what they want to see… Step up punk.”

Floyd Mayweather, on his rather different invitation to Manny Pacquaio of Phillipines to a boxing bout. If Mayweather does talk this much trash outside the ring, imagine facing him. Well, Pacquaio knows it best.

Cricket: “Where else in the world do you get the chance to basically kill someone with two bouncers in an over? Legally.”

South African pace man Dale Steyn in praise of Test cricket. In an age where every young fan seems to prefer the shorter formats, Steyn’s quote came as a big sign of support.

Cycling: “Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling. He deserves to be forgotten in cycling.”

UCI chief Patrick Macquaid following revelations that Armstrong did use drugs for his Tour De France victories which he earlier denied for several years. Armstrong was not only a legend in cycling but for the entire sporting fraternity, given his courageous comebacks from Cancer to win 7 Tour De Frances. What a shame for the sport of cycling constantly haunted by doping!

Football: “Miracles do happen in Manchester. Only this time it’s on this side of the road.”

Roberto Mancini on his side’s last minute triumph in the Barclays Premier League in the 2011-12 season. Sergio Aguero’s stoppage time brace sealed it for City who won its first title in over 5 decades – boosted by million dollar investments from Abu Dhabi.

Golf: “I never got this far in my dreams.”

Bubba Watson, after winning the 2012 Augusta Masters in a nerve-wracking play-off with Louis Oosthuizen. Watson, claiming his first Major, shot up into the Top Ten for the first time in his career.

Tennis: “My rackets are named after Chelsea players. I used Torres today, maybe that’s where I went wrong.”

Josh Goodall, mockingly remarks on the mistake of racket selection after his first round exit at Wimbledon. Coincidentally, it was also the time when the Torres jokes was at its peaks as well.

Chris Paul and Blake Griffin – has their time come?

For years, the Clippers never made the playoffs. When they did play against the Lakers, the game always went one way. Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal against the likes of…wait, who did the Clippers have in the past decade? Yes, the team was horrendous. Reggie Miller shot threes against Clippers as it were practice. Jordan dunked over every Clipper like he was using them as a tool in the Spring Dunk contest. Fans looked at the Clippers like we, in India, look at the likes of Kenya, Namibia and the Netherlands in cricket – we wanted teams to play them to improve statistics. Remember Herschelle Gibbs smacking a Netherlands bowler for 6 sixes? That is precisely what happened when any top team played against the Clippers in the 1990s and 2000s. If relegation was a reality in the NBA, Los Angeles would have only had the Lakers 20 years ago.

Gone are the days when Reggie Miller stepped foot on the court or Shaquille O’Neal actually jumped. Jordan sits on the sidelines in the Charlotte arena whereas Kobe is battling to salvage a playoff spot for the Lakers. The year is 2013 and the Clippers are on a 17 game winning streak. Few seasons ago, winning 17 games in a season was an achievement for this franchise. Today, it is a mere winning streak. The questions arise – are the Clippers for real? Who owns LA? Are Chris Paul and Blake Griffin greater than Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard?

While the answers to those questions are insinuated to be straightforward, the attention needs to shift to the Clippers’ boardroom. No deserves greater praise than Donald Sterling, the owner of the Clippers. Since 1981, the real estate mogul has owned the franchise which he purchased for 12 million USD. Till two years ago, the Clippers were barely making ends meet unlike their counterparts in LA such as the Lakers and the Dodgers. Today, the franchise is worth 285 million USD according to Forbes. Sterling stuck to the team through thick and thin – didn’t sell the team, didn’t bankrupt it (knowing he’s capable of doing both). The team went years boasting the worst record in the NBA, hardly holding any fan base to brag and inability to attract stars to play for the Red, Royal Blue and White. Now, it is whole new ball game. Sterling isn’t a controversy free man – he was reported to have consulted prostitutes for making trades, lost a court battle for nearly 20 million between game 10 and 11 of the streak and has been constantly under the media radar. Very few news with the Sterling label is good. Be it off-court or on-court, Sterling is a man of wrong interest. That is another reason why this streak means so much – it grabs attention for the game of basketball in the NBA – a league which is governed by an equally controversial David Stern.

Coach Vinny Del Negro doesn’t deserve any fewer accolades either. Fired at Chicago, Del Negro came to the Clippers and was received with some fervour. Fans were mad at the organization for hiring Del Negro, who couldn’t make do with Derrick Rose’s talents or the dexterous Chicago bench, out of all the options. When the Clippers did reach the second round of the players in the Western Conference after slipping past Grizzlies, fans rose in adulation of Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and Caron Butler. Yet, very few saw what Vinny Del Negro did for this team. In fact, they blamed him for hampering the playoff run. And in the midst of the 17 game streaks, Negro isn’t the center of focus. Neither is Sterling. And undeservingly, neither is Neil Olshey. Who is Neil Olshey?

Neil Olshey – the shrewd dealer

Olshey is the reason the Clippers traded for Chris Paul. A shrewd dealer, Olshey, the GM at the beginning of the 2011-12 season, stole Paul from the clutches of the Lakers. The Clippers weren’t even in the reckoning to bag Paul, yet Olshey managed to convince Paul to don the Red, Royal Blue and White. A year later, his contract wasn’t extended and nobody has heard of him except a select few. Remember the time when everyone thought the Clippers were fooling themselves by drafting an injury prone Blake Griffin as the number 1 overall pick? One year out and the Clippers were believed to be doomed. The NBA’s wrath comes from its horrible draft picks. Be it Detroit, Portland or possibly the Clippers, draft picks can go either way and prove crucial to a team’s title run – fruitfully like Oklahoma or painfully like the Troll Blazers.

Coming back to the main man of the team, Chris Paul, it’s high time that he wins that elusive NBA title. But be patient; nobody means to say that the Clippers are title worthy already. The Thunder could still be the clutch playoff team and only the dumbest of the dummies will write off the Spurs from the race. Wait, who can forget the Heat from the Eastern Conference? But the Clippers will have a shot – maybe, this season or maybe the next. When the chance does come, they need to grab it like a seagull eyeing her aquatic prey from the skies. Paul has been the league’s best point guard for quite some time now. He shoots the ball exceptionally well, is an assist machine and grabs rebounds like a 7 foot tall center. His defensive prowess – steals, blocks, man marking and zone play – is second to none. Last season saw LeBron win his first NBA title, the year before belonged to Dirk. It has to happen soon for Chris Paul, doesn’t it? How long will the league’s best point guard go without winning his first NBA title? No, he’s not an overly eager three point shooting Steve Nash or foul troubled Jason Kidd. Moreover, he does have Blake Griffin, Grant Hill, Caron Butler, Chauncey Billups and Jamal Crawford to aide him. If anyone body deserves a title in this team, it’s Chris Paul.

2013 has arrived. LeBron is still putting up record numbers and Dwight Howard is still blocking guards like nobody’s business. While the city of Los Angeles recuperates to the rejuvenated Clippers show time, Staples Center beckons for the franchise to continue its run. 17 games and counting – the city of Los Angeles has its new contender. No it isn’t the perennial Lakers, it is a rather less known Clippers. Yes, the Clippers are here to prove their worth – to the NBA, to us, to everyone and more importantly, to Hollywood city.

5. Webb Simpson, Golf

Simpson joined the PGA in 2008 as a young and ambitious 22 year old. Till the US Open, his home state of North Carolina hadn’t even heard of him. Out of all players in the final round of the US Open, Simpson was not even cited amongst the bookie’s favorites. Yet, Simpson produced a scintillating run of strokes that saw him win the major from a 4 shot deficit. One of the more nerve wracking major finishes in modern history, Simpson gathered his composure over the likes of more popular names such as Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk.

To prove why he came from nowhere, Simpson’s highest finish in a major was a tie for 14th in the 2011 US Open.

4. Anthony Davis, Basketball

Davis was a strongly touted recruit in the class of 2011. Coach John Calipari of Kentucky fought hard for him and when he did commit to Kentucky, big things were expected of him. However, not even Davis would have fantasized what happened to the rookie in 2012. Not only was he a consensus first overall pick in the NBA draft, he won the National Championship with Kentucky, an Olympic Gold Medal with the US National Basketball Team, consensus First Team All-American and All-American Freshman Player of the Year, and unfathomed marketing stardom with his unibrow.

From a normal high school going kid who barely saw a thousand dollar check, Davis today commands millions in endorsements, merchandise sales and contract negotiations. Not too bad for a 19 year old, eh?

3. Gabby Douglas, Gymnastics

Douglas was an average gymnast going into the 2012 Olympics. She barely received any attention compared to other American Olympians such as Michael Phelps, Kobe Bryant and her teammate, reigning World Champion Jordyn Weber.

Before the competition for the all around gold began, Douglas was not listed amongst the top 15 favorites. In fact, she was way far from even featuring in the top 20. Weber failed to qualify for the Finals and this gave Douglas one heck of an opportunity. Guess what? Gabby Douglas won gold in both Team and Individual All-Around competitions, appears in Cereal Box covers, shook hands with President Obama like nobody’s business and is the richest 4 foot 11 inches person in America.

Ask Shaq what he did when was 4 feet 11 inches – probably doing elementary school homework?

2. Missy Franklin, Swimming

Who is Franklin’s idol? American swimming legend Natalie Coughlin. How many medals does Coughlin have in her Olympic career? Surprisingly less than what Franklin won in one Olympics at London. Funny, eh?

Franklin shook the swimming world with enough surprise to send a Tsunami across the pool in London with her 4 golds and 1 bronze. When she does hit the pool in Rio De Janeiro in 2016, fans would probably expect an 8 gold medal haul from her too.

Just remember when you last dreamt about competing next to your childhood sports hero? And now, actually bettering it in just one Olympics? Missy Franklin did it all – with her extra Colgate worthy smile.

1. Jeremy Lin, Basketball

Linsanity! Linpossible is nothing! Linson Square Garden! America – the Lin of Dreams!

Jeremy Lin brought the world to a standstill with as much festivity and adulation surrounding his name as much as any athlete would only hope for. A day before he played against the Celtics due to a Carmelo Anthony injury, Lin slept on his brother’s coach, was cut by two teams and was undrafted out of Harvard. A week later, he was racking up millions thanks to his game winning performances against the Lakers and the Raptors. And Taiwan now has an idol to compete against China’s Yao Ming.

In 2012, Youtube, Google, Yahoo and Bing must have had enough searches for Lin’s name to equal the amount the Lin’s worth now. If you’re curious, Forbes called him the 170 Million Man.

For years, the United States has colossally dominated the international sports circuit. Be it basketball, cycling, swimming, women’s soccer, golf, and several more, Team America has unanimously produced more top notch talent than any nation has. Why is that America ranks amongst the best consistently despite the greatest of efforts from other nations? In a Game of Thrones in today’s sporting world, can anybody rival America’s superiority? Sometimes yes, but mostly no. Then what is the secret formula to the nation raveling success rate? The answer: the power of an established collegiate system – NCAA: National Collegiate Athlete Association.

Michael Jordan, the game of basketball’s greatest athlete ever, was a product of the University of North Carolina system. Tiger Woods, the infamous former World Number 1 golfer and the richest athlete to play a sport, went to Stanford where his golf roots blossomed. Mark Spitz, the golden winner of seven gold medals at a single Olympics in Munich ’72 went back to Indiana University after his unsuccessful venture at the 1968 Olympics. Every player in the United States Women’s soccer team graduated from a university before plying their gold medal winning trade at the Olympics. Incredible, isn’t it?

The news doesn’t end there. Just almost every mediocre college game in Basketball, Baseball and American Football has a full house audience. Tickets are priced abnormally for the most anticipated matchups where students/alumni/parents/general public wait hours in line just to watch their beloved teams play. The matchup between Louisiana State University versus University of Alabama in the 2012 BCS National Championship had ticket prices listed nearly 1000 USD for a nose bleeder. 2011’s NCAA Basketball championship game between Butler and Connecticut drew over 70,000 people to the Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas while the average attendance of a Kentucky NCAA basketball game is over 23,000 – more than the Ranji Trophy championship game – while many Indian universities fail to even report sports statistics for their calendar year. Crazy, isn’t it?

At first, it seems so simple to understand this American college festivity. Go to college, express team spirit, stay in touch with your alma mater and attend games in electrifying atmospheres. But for Americans, it’s much more than just that.

I attended a football game between Oman and Brazil in 2009 where the likes of Kaka, Daniel Alves and Robinho came to town. Football is huge in the Middle East and the national teams are venerated for their victories. Yet, the atmosphere was nothing unparallel to the game day spirit I witnessed at the Ohio State versus Michigan football game in Columbus, Ohio. Robinho, Kaka versus a bunch of unknown collegiate athletes? Hilarious, if more sports fanatics actually paid 100 USD to watch these college going kids than a relatively meager ticket cost of 10 USD for internationally renowned football names.

These collegiate athletes do not just become successful sportsmen or women. In a statement on NCAA.com, Mark President spoke about graduation and quality of academics as a key in the success of athletes. He said, “Our academic reforms continue to bear fruit. We are not satisfied, but we are proud that we have reached another milestone, as now seven of every 10 student-athletes in our highest-profile sports are earning their degrees.” At Notre Dame, the nation’s best American Football program, 97% of the athletes graduate with a degree. Almost every year, one NCAA athlete is a recipient of or at least in top contention for the prestigious Rhodes scholarship which is awarded to global scholars from the University of Oxford. As the years have gone by, the criminal associations with these athletes have also come down to a staggering low at present where most athletes were able to obtain non-sports associates jobs that easily. Finally, an alumnus of the NCAA sports program starts with an above average starting salary in non-sports professions, donates more money than an average global millionaire and has engaged in aiding the society than what many social workers can only dream.

Many of us in India compare our political system to that of America and believe that we fail to allocate endowments to sports. True. Our infrastructure is unsatisfactory, agreed. But we do have our sport – Cricket.

Cricket is by far the single most important sport in the nation and it gets every possible funding as possible. Indians breathe, breed and die Cricket. Yet, our authority in the game declined after the World Cup which barely existed for a year. (Wait, for how long has America bagged the most number of Olympic medals?) Even Cricket’s success ranks unfittingly low compared to that of NCAA athletes. And to measure popularity – only a handful of Indian cricketers’ facebook pages or twitter accounts have as many followers as compared to these NCAA prodigies.

Years from now, America will still produce the prodigious talents in every sport. The only question for the world to answer is will the rest compete? We don’t need to continue to blame our existent systems, irrespective of however corrupt they are. As candles are blown away each time we crib about our politicians or what not, America is continuing to strive miles ahead in sports despite corrupt politicians being prevalent there as well. It is disgraceful to label our athletes as unworthy talents. Instead, it’s best to learn from how success was actually achieved.

Now that the secret formula has been revealed for quite some time, it is a requisite that the nations go back to their drawing boards and develop their athletes from the grass root levels. Be it infrastructure, equipment or education, a collegiate system plays a massive role in grooming the future of sports in any country, and it is essential that nations learn from the Land of the opportunities – ‘murica! Start from the grassroots, quit cribbing about politics, and make college a bigger place than just classroom education. For all we know, a decade from now, our Olympic teams might actually rank in the top 20.

15. Maurice Harkless

Position: Small Forward

Team: Orlando Magic

College: St John’s University

Grade: B

In the first five games he did start, Harkless averaged 6.0 points on 53.8 percent shooting (14-of-26) and 4.4 rebounds per game. Since then, he’s scored a minimal 10 points with 12 rebounds in the last six.

16. Royce White

Position: Small Forward

Team: Houston Rockets

College: Iowa State

Grade: F

Royce White is yet to shoot a ball in the NBA. He’s lost in the D-leagues and will possibly never play in the pros.

17. Tyler Zeller

Position: Center

Team: Dallas Mavericks (now plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers)

College: University of North Carolina

Grade: B+

Zeller has been a good pick by the Cavs in some contrast to the other big men drafted in the ’12 draft. Moreover, Zeller wasn’t particularly expected to be putting 8 PPG and 6 RPG, and at the same time receiving less coverage thanks to his wonder kid brother, Cody. For the 29 odd minutes he receives in the game, Zeller needs to work on his shot selection and FT %. Big men are prone to get fouled and if Zeller does improvise on this, his PPG will shoot up.

18. Terrence Jones

Position: Small Forward

Team: Houston Rockets

College: University of Kentucky

Grade: D

Jones sparked alive in the first game against the Thunder with a 20 point stat but ever since, not many have seen the Kentucky product progress in the NBA. He’s been dominant in the post when played but when it comes to playing defense, Terrence hasn’t showed up. Reports suggest he’s going to be sent to the D-leagues to make more squad room for trade deals and returning players from injuries.

19. Andrew Nicholson

Position: Power Forward

Team: Orlando Magic

College: St. Bonaventure

Grade: B

Like Zeller, Nicholson wasn’t expected to be a first season wonder. He’s scored 8 points a game in 14 minutes of game time and grabbed nearly 4 rebounds. Also, when needed, he has constantly man marked the opponent with efficiency. Nicholson has the potential to grow into a 15 PPG and 8 RPG center, and no Dwight Howard in Orlando gives him more opportunity to make best use of it.

20. Evan Fournier

Position: Shooting Guard

Team: Denver Nuggets

Team: Poiters Basket ‘86

Grade: C

It is harsh on Evan Fournier but every player who comes out of France is expected to be a Tony Parker caliber. Unfortunately for the 20 year old Frenchman, he is nowhere close to demonstrating the versatility of Tony Parker. A year from now might see Fournier back in France or in the D-Leagues.

21. Jared Sullinger

Position: Power Forward

Team: Boston Celtics

College: Ohio State University

Grade: A-

Sullinger would have been drafted top three in the Kyrie Irving draft had he left Ohio State in his freshman year. However, he chose to stay another year and was picked outside the lottery in the ’12 draft. While his draft value had depreciated due to recurring back spasms and his height, Sullinger was an absolute legend in college basketball. His two years saw Ohio State win two BIG TEN titles and do undeniably well in the NCAA tournament. At Boston, he is not only being mentored by Kevin Garnett but is getting increasing game time that has him average 5 PPG and RPG – a stat not too bad for a 21st overall pick.

22. Fab Melo

Position: Center

Team: Boston Celtics

College: Syracuse University

Grade: D

Not too often you see the Celtics pick two big men in the Draft; while one has done exceptionally well in the form of Sullinger, Melo has been a disappointment as expected. In the D-Leagues presently, Melo needs to work on his shooting confidence and basketball IQ which wasn’t relevant in college basketball.

23. John Jenkins

Position: Shooting Guard

Team: Atlanta Hawks

College: Vanderbilt University

Grade: B+

He averages 3.5 PPG and less than an assist per game, yet he possesses a grade of B+. Curious? Well, his PER is a staggering 18 and Jones just shot a double digit game against the Pacers. Moreover, he is a sweet shooter, effective man-marker and a prodigy in distracting the defense. Vanderbilt isn’t traditionally a basketball program but Jenkins helped change it. Now, with the Hawks quick offense, Jenkins has been a smart pick with his athleticism in dodging the defenders to make room for shooters.

24. Jared Cunningham

Position: Shooting Guard

Team: Dallas Mavericks (drafted by Cleveland Cavaliers)

College: Oregon State University

Grade: C-

Despite his high PER, Cunningham benefited heavily from being part of a non-traditional basketball program. Oregon State didn’t go anywhere in the NCAA tournament and many expected Cunningham to not be drafted at all. To indicate his worth to Mavs, he’s played just 7 games so far.

25. Tony Wroten

Position: Point Guard

Team: Memphis Grizzlies

College: University of Washington

Grade: F

Not everyone drafted from Washington will be a Brandon Roy. The Grizzlies clearly had no idea when they picked Wroten who has 0 PPG, 0 APG and has 1 rebound. He’s featured in 3 games in a Grizzlies side that clearly didn’t need a point guard when Mr. Fitness Mike Conley is hitting his prime.

26. Miles Plumlee

Position: Center

Team: Indiana Pacers

College: Duke University

Grade: D

Plumlee is a smart addition. He gives depth to this Pacers organization that heavily surrounds its game around the paint and rebounds. Plumlee was sent off to the D-League before good performances brought him back this week.

27. Arnett Moultrie

Position: Power Forward

Team: Philadelphia 76ers (drafted by the Miami Heat)

College: Mississippi State University

Grade: D

Another one of those D-League perennials, Moultrie will need to learn how to capitalize in the absence of Andrew Bynum.

28. Perry Jones III

Position: Small Forward

Team: Oklahoma City Thunder

College: Baylor University

Grade: C-

Like Sullinger, Perry Jones III’s stock value plummeted in the final weeks leading to the draft. There is no questioning this man’s immaculate talent and shooting ability near the rim but answers await his game time in a team with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook who inevitably will never allow Perry Jones III to shoot the ball.

29. Marquis Teague

Position: Point Guard

Team: Chicago Bulls

College: University of Kentucky

Grade: B-

One thing that will allow Teague to feature more prominently in the league is the injuries hampering the Bulls. Thibodeau is a huge bench player and Teague will get his chances as the season goes which justifies his strong grade.

30. Festus Ezeli

Position: Center

Team: Golden State Warriors

College: Vanderbilt University

Grade: B-

Nothing beyond blocked shots or aggressive defending characterizes Festus Ezeli’s play. With Andrew Bogut and David Lee in the team, Ezeli might be brought in just to ensure rebounds and stringent defense. However, last two games have been Ezeli performance rather well and hence, justifies his grade.

5. Bill Self, University of Kansas

Self produces the best out of the average. He isn’t the best recruiter like Calipari or the incredible tactician like Roy Williams, but Self is the single greatest inspirational soul in NCAA basketball. Most of his drafted players in the NBA hardly exist for more than a season let a few string of games. They miss Self’s personnel coaching which isn’t abundant in the NBA. It’s easy to say that players who play under him, worship him. His temperament is divinely under control and the choice of words he offers is exquisitely delightful to listen to. Always humble in victories and accepting in defeats, Self is the winningest coach since he took over Kansas.

Notable recruits: Mario Chalmers, Cole Aldrich

4. John Calipari, University of Kentucky

Despite the media’s best efforts to label him a cheat and the NCAA’s attempts to curtail his success, Calipari is the best recruiter the game of College Basketball will ever see. If you’re a highly touted recruit in high school, Calipari will be at your door step, personally offering you to play for him. None of his players go beyond a sophomore season in college, let alone one considering their talents is rich enough to thrive in the NBA. Having boasted several lottery picks, Calipari’s coaching system ensures a high tempo game with few dribbles, which according to me is a rare mix. He doesn’t just do well at big college programs, Calipari’s most notable acclaim came when he took University of Massachusetts all the way to the NCAA game.

Notable recruits: John Wall, Anthony Davis and Derrick Rose

3. Roy Williams, University of North Carolina

Roy Williams is a serious general. You wouldn’t want to mess with him, question his theories or predict his team’s downfall. Think about every kid’s nightmare coach who produces success, and that is Roy Williams. He wins a lot, yet believes in winning only through the principled way of basketball. His players don’t shoot cheap, always play ethically and compassionately. 10 years at UNC coupled with two National Championships, seven Final Fours, and Williams is well on his way to being the Dean Smith of the 2000s. A short coaching career at UNC basketball yet a highly successful and stable one – Roy Williams is a divine figure at Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Notable recruits: Ty Lawson, Tyler Hansbrough and Ray Felton

2. Jim Boeheim, Syracuse University

Think about Boeheim being the Arsene Wenger of the NCAA Basketball fraternity. Not too exquisite or publicized talent, but enough to make a championship-contending side. Aside from his off-court allegations, Boeheim has been a fatherly figure to most of his players. Ask Carmelo Anthony who is the most motivating figure he’s met in his career and Boeheim’s name will be shouted out. Boeheim is also the best user of the bench play system – not often does he throw his best players onto the court and sometimes, plays his strengths from the longevity and durability of his bench. An NBA suited offense with three point transition shots and pick-roll promenade, Boeheim’s talents often get drafted in the lottery. Career record: 863-301, one national title, three Final Fours, 13 regular season/tournament conference titles, one Naismith Coach of the Year award.

Notable recruits: Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Coleman and Gerry McNamara

1. Mike Krzyzewski, Duke University

Coach K, as he is lovingly called, might not just be the greatest coach in the game today but quite possibly, the best ever: 907-285 wins-losses, four national titles, 11 Final Fours, 25 regular season/tournament conference titles, three Naismith Coach of the Year awards. Yes, nearly 1000 wins in college basketball and this guy has got a decade to go in the game. Moreover, he is the current American National Basketball Coach, so he not only has the best recruits in college to work with, but moreover, tames the egos of LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant at the Olympics. At Duke, he is an absolute legend with many fans jokingly writing his names in ballots for Presidential elections. He not only transformed Duke basketball into an household name but has consistently maintained the team’s elite status for nearly 3 decades now.

Notable recruits: Grant Hill, Elton Brand, Shane Battier and Kyrie Irving

6. Damian Lillard

Position: Point Guard

Team: Portland Trail Blazers

College: Weber State

Grade: A+

Lillard has been the best draftee so far. He averages 18 PPG and nearly 7 APG, stats that nearly better what veterans Tony Parker and Deron Williams are putting up. Lillard not only shoots well in clutch situation, he’s a creative weapon that any coach would want in his armoury during the final quarter. With Alridge at his peak and Lillard being groomed impeccably at Portland, the state of Oregon finally has a glitter of hope with its draft picks. (Remember Greg Oden and Sam Bowie?)

7. Harrison Barnes

Position: Small Forward

Team: Golden State Warriors

College: University of North Carolina

Grade: C

Barnes was a first overall NBA draft pick heading into the college season in 2011. His freshmen year in college had everyone talk about his skill set. He did show up though, but not enough and he went at number 7 in the ’12 draft. Barnes isn’t a poor prospect by any means – he’s tall, shoots well and has speed on his side to guard the NBA’s quickest. Yet, he doesn’t live up to any expectation. UNC were knocked out by a less talented Kansas side in the NCAA brackets last year where Barnes was to blame for his unforgettable decision making. At Golden State, he hasn’t improved from that weakness either. Good thing for him the franchise is in playoff contention thanks to David Lee and Stephan Curry.

8. Terrence Ross

Position: Shooting Guard

Team: Toronto Raptors

College: University of Washington

Grade: C

Ross is hard to judge. He doesn’t get nearly half as many minutes as other rookies and when he does, doesn’t feature prominently. 6 PPG, 0.5 APG and 2 RPG – those are sleeper stats. Yet he has immense potential. Toronto generally drafts decently well compared to other lottery teams and Ross was picked with some thought. Until he starts shooting more (for heaven’s sake, he attempts 6.7 shots a game when every other rookie is slinging the ball at any try) or gets minutes, Ross will be one of the Caron Butlers – nobody knows what happens to you!

9. Andre Drummond

Position: Center

Team: Detroit Pistons

College: University of Connecticut

Grade: B+

Drummond is a beast. He doesn’t shoot nearly as much as Ross but his defensive prowess is second to none amongst the rookies. A 21.32 PER – yes, he’s as important as Davis is to the Hornets but that’s not surprising with the absence of quality at the Palace. Drummond has a great future in this league – experts predicted him being the next Ben Wallace with the same build but I see him going even further. In a year, Drummond would be averaging a double-double and nearly 2.5 BPG, which is impressive for a 6 foot 10 inches center.

10. Austin Rivers

Position: Point Guard

Team: New Orleans Hornets

College: Duke University

Grade: C-

He cannot play the position of point guard, PERIOD. He struggled in college to adapt to the Coach K system and has shown nothing better in the NBA. Rivers’ strengths lie in the shooting guard position but that is where Eric Gordon plays for the Hornets. The California native is forced into shooting from drive-ins instead of transition, something that certainly doesn’t help his stats. Sometimes, I wonder if it is harsh on this rookie for the impeccable talent he possesses.

11. Meyers Leonard

Position: Center

Team: Portland Trail Blazers

College: University of Illinois

Grade: C

Leonard won’t achieve significance with this Trail Blazers team: one – Damian Lillard stardom, two – lack of post game and three – lack of assertiveness to seek the ball. He averages nearly 20 minutes a game and shoots thrice during those 20 minutes. Obviously, you’re prone not to notice this 7 foot monster.

12. Jeremy Lamb

Position: Shooting Guard

Team: Houston Rockets (now plays for Oklahoma City Thunder)

College: University of Connecticut

Grade: D

Lamb played a crucial role in the National Championship winning side of UConn. Everybody looked at Kemba Walker and his clutch shooting but Lamb’s man marking and pick-roll defined the tactical genius of Jim Calhoun. In the NBA, Lamb hasn’t played more than a quarter; neither does he get the ball from a shooting abundance in Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. The answer is simple for Lamb – he has to move elsewhere before he’s busted from the league.

13. Kendall Marshall

Position: Point Guard

Team: Phoenix Suns

College: University of North Carolina

Grade: F

It’s shocking to see how depressingly bad these draft picks have gone after the first six. Marshall is in the D-League and doesn’t average a point, rebound or assist per game in the NBA. Isn’t this bad enough itself? And he plays for Phoenix – you’d expect him to thrive there.

14. John Henson

Position: Power Forward

Team: Milwaukee Bucks

College: University of North Carolina

Grade: C

Out of the first 14 lottery picks, three guys belonged to the UNC system. Yet, none of them have made it as big as any of us expected it to be. Henson isn’t as good as Anthony Davis or Andre Drummond but neither is he as bad as 3.9 PPG, 2.7 RPG speaks. Maybe a year and more game time will change this grade?

1) Anthony Davis

Position: Power Forward

Team: New Orleans Hornets

College: University of Kentucky

Grade: A

Davis has not only improved offensively but has been a huge barrier for the opponentz within the Hornets’ paint. A concussion hampered his ascent to the throne at New Orleans; nevertheless, Davis continued to show why he is at the NBA for the long run. Huge blocks by the unibrow, sometimes over veterans, shutting out an opponent’s tactical prowess and proving a nuisance for the best of coaches to deal against, Davis has been a great draft pick for the Hornets. Hadn’t it been for his lumpy offense, Mr. Kentucky would definitely have received the perfect grade. Note that his PER is 21.2 so far which is just 0.2 shy away from what Kyrie Irving finished with in 2011-12.

2. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Position: Small Forward

Team: Charlotte Bobcats

College: University of Kentucky

Grade: A-

This is precisely what happens when the top two picks belong to the same college: expectations and comparisons. While they play completely different roles, Kidd-Gilchrist and Davis were products of the Calipari system which admirably prepares collegiate athletes for the NBA. Take a look at Derrick Rose, John Wall and now, these two.

Focusing on MKG, his first huge performance was against the Mavs where his aggressive foul play was overshadowed by his will power to win and clutch shooting. He may not be the greatest three point shooter from this class, but the Charlotte forward is definitely the go to guy in this newly assembled team irrespective of the presence of Kemba Walker. Give him a year or two and MKG could be in contention to be a top drive-in specialist. His offensive repertoire needs to improve significantly for him to function as a full throttle shooter – be it the paint, a jump shot or a three point fade away.

3. Bradley Beal

Position: Shooting Guard

Team: Washington Wizards

College: University of Florida

Grade: B-

Beal wasn’t meant to play in this current Washington team. When the Wizards drafted him, they expected a prodigious link up with John Wall. The latter has been injured ever since and Beal is shooting quiet pathetically. His 35% from FG and nearly making 1 out of 5 shots from the 3 pt arc to go with his poor PER has many doubters increasing their stakes in this player being a bust soon. Yet, I believe Beal will improve into a decent talent in the NBA and given the right roster, could put up 17 PPG and 5 PPG with a 45 FG %. Beal needs time and soon will come John Wall. Will he survive the NBA’s wrath till then? Maybe I’m just exaggerating.

4. Dion Waiters

Position: Shooting Guard

Team: Cleveland Cavaliers

College: Syracuse University

Grade: B

Waiters was a huge surprise going 4th in the draft. Not only didn’t he start a single game in college in 2011-12, he was not predicted to be a top draftee before his final year in collegiate basketball. Luck shined his way and here he is having donned a Cavs jersey.

Dion Waiters was drafted by the Ohio franchise for his shooting prowess. At Syracuse, he made numerous shots in transition, especially in the NCAA tournament (Does anyone remember that floater over Jared Sullinger and Ohio State?). While he hasn’t lived up to the hype or the expectations, Waiters has evinced some classy footwork and tandem with Kyrie Irving which shows a glitter of hope for this unsatisfactory team.

If he does get his FG% up from an abysmal 35% and an 11.5 PER, Cleveland have themselves a treat to watch with Varejao, Thompson and Irving linking up with Waiters.

5. Thomas Robinson

Position: Center/ Power Forward

Team: Sacramento Kings

College: University of Kansas

Grade: E

Like his jersey number, Robinson has been a total “zero” in the league so far. He can’t shoot, doesn’t rebound and sits on the bench like he’s disappointed with the game time being offered. Giving him a quarter is a huge mistake. Cousins is playing like a primo sophomore and Robinson, who was expected to aide this Sacramento side to grow back into the glory 90s days, has been a disaster. Watching Robinson shine in college was a delight but see him go down in the pros is just disheartening and the 2 game ban just made everything worse.

Thomas Robinson – the Hasheem Thabeet of the 2012 draft class.

When I was a kid and weight thrice as less, I believed everything my parents told me. They asked me to not eat ice cream, I followed their advice. My mother believed that not doing Maths homework would ridicule our Indian culture and I fell for that ridicule rather easily. To finish it off, my father told me that in India, Tendulkar comes first, then cricket and then comes the government. Looking back at it today, I could not agree with him more.

I grew up as a cricket lover. Cricket meant to me what it meant to an entire nation. Unfortunately for a fanatic like me, I got less coverage as I lived abroad or like my friends back home called me - Indian Born Confused Desi. I loved watching Jonty Rhodes dive across the green patch like he’s in the Chinese Olympic Team or Adam Gilchrist sling the bat with as much passion as he would had he played for the New York Yankees. Moreover, Wasim Akram’s fast bowling was a delight – as much delight as perfectly spreading butter and jam on the bread with no uneven spreads. I often thought if players like them would ever be reincarnated. I know the answer now – NEVER!

I was envious of my grandfather as he saw Bradman stroke the ball down the cover and my father since he always highlighted Sunil Gavaskar’s straight drive or Michael Holding’s aggressive bouncers. Often I sat in my room wondering who I could boast that I saw in my generation entirely. I needed one name, that name which stuck with my generation forever. Thankfully, a curly haired gentleman made his debut just before my birth. More thankfully, I could brag he belonged to my generation. I had Gilchrist as my wicket keeping idol, Jonty as my fielding inspiration, Akram as the definition of speed in my dictionary but I had only Tendulkar as my sporting icon – see the difference? Yes, Tendulkar was as important to me as eating cereal in the morning, concentrating in class or doing my maths homework at sharp 7pm. If these things didn’t happen in sync, it meant Tendulkar happened that day.

When Tendulkar went onto play Australia, I clung onto my couch with excitement. I knew he would batter Warne like my mom made French toast or send McGrath packing as the FedEx mailman did with my Nike shoes. As he stood tall against Shoaib Akhthar, I couldn’t wait but express my delight on those fours across point or mid on. The Little Masterwas barely as tall as my bedroom lamp yet he batted like a giant against the likes of Allan Donald, Andy Caddick, Jason Gillespie and Courtney Walsh. As he smacked one six after another, mothers in India fed their mouth opened, usually tantrum throwing kids. He meant something to everyone – be it a mother who struggled to feed her kids, a workaholic father or a noisy kid.

As he took to crease, the nation would take to a standstill as well. Robberies reduced. Chaiwallas profited infinitely. Malls were crowded for the public to watch free cricket on those giant television screens. And each time he scored a 100, it felt like Diwali. (Do the maths, 100 in 25 years is 4 Diwalis a year plus the usual 1 = an average of 5 festive Diwalis a year in India!)

And then there are the critics, of course. Those guys who chew their paan, grow their tummies but do nothing else than criticize this master. Everyone knows these guys – we call them Gyaan Babas. They once told me that Tendulkar should have given up this beautiful game ten years ago when he was busy tackling injuries. When I refuted, I was branded immature. What do these spoiled kids know? Nonsensical bhashan they give us. As India won the World Cup, I wanted to call those critics who shunned my childhood hero. Give him a few years, we young kids yelled, he’ll win us the World Cup. Well, Tendulkar is a generous man – he never fails to fulfil his promises – be it win the World Cup or shut the Pakistani attack, both happened at the same time.

To cement his tag as the greatest ever or G.O.A.T, Tendulkar’s numerous record breakers can’t be questioned. In ODIs, he was the first man to break the 200 individual run barrier in a match, scored the most number of runs in a calendar year and in a career, most number of fifties and hundreds in ODIs, most games played and most man of the matches won – to list a quarter of a quadruple more. It doesn’t end here. The Little Master’stest records evince his durability in both forms of his game, his much criticized balance and consistency. He has the most number of test centuries, has played the most number of test games and scored the most number of individual 150+ scores. They say if you type every record Tendulkar has broken, it is possible it would take a huge part of the Lord of the Rings novel. I don’t doubt it either. Our kids will now have something sporty to read too.

One of my friends told me Tendulkar isn’t the greatest. I asked him why. His answer: Tendulkar failed as a captain. But I have my friend Virat Kohli to retort. After winning the World Cup, my boy Virat said this on international television, “Tendulkar has carried the burden of the nation for 21 years. It is time we carried him on our shoulders.” I think the line didn’t just suffice then, in fact, suffices more now that Tendulkar has announced his retirement. People say he betrayed the nation by delaying retirement. What about the countless batsmen who left him hanging during those dire times when he singlehandedly won the game or at least showed a glimmer of hope? What about those times when he was the only face of our cricket team? Does anyone of us want to be reminded where our cricketing team was 10 years ago? Yes, Ganguly transformed our side and Dhoni held it well till the World Cup. Perhaps John Wright was the pillar that rebuilt this dying cricketing side but who was there as a spine for all these men to function? Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.

The God of cricket has called it a day in ODIs and thinking about it over and over again depresses me. Sachin to Cricket is like Salt to Food – they need each other. But certain things do come to an end and now that Tendulkar is close to retirement from the game itself, it’s high time we stand beside him. Our team has let him down too many times for him to function with a tail end. When he was injured, we questioned his durability. When he retires, we forget his versatility. At least, let us brag that our generation got to watch him play cricket and it’s our treasure that we may keep forever. Just remember, generations down the line, Tendulkar will no more be a treasure of this generation.

Out went Andrew Bynum, the league’s second best center. In came the league’s best for over 3-4 years now. His name: Howard, Dwight David Howard. Since being picked number 1 in the 2004 draft, Howard has been a threat to the NBA’s most elite defences and offences. Not many players are as good defensively as he is, in fact, he’s won the Defensive Player of the Year for three years running now. Rebounds, blocks, field goal percentage and free throw attempts, Howard continues to surmount over everyone in the league. Yet, his team wasn’t up to par with his standards. Orlando did reach the Finals once but Dwight did everything. He wished for a team that wouldn’t entirely depend upon him yet covet his attention.

Clippers, Celtics, Nets, 76ers… Lakers – Yes, every player’s dream Christmas present, to play for the Lakers.

On August 10, 2012, the fifth most iconic image in the NBA this year saw Dwight Howard pulling on the Lakers jersey in a trade that involved the Magic, Nuggets and the 76ers too. In what has to go down as one of the most bumper deals since the KG to Boston mega bonanza, Howard and his Lakers jersey certainly deserve a mention on this list. And moreover, it signalled an end to the forever media hyped Dwight Howard trade saga.

4. We have the Knicks, and the NETS – we are the city that will never sleep

Since the 1957 Dodgers in Baseball, Brooklyn, one of the most iconic cities in the world, hasn’t had a sports team. Fans rooted for the Yankees in Baseball, now that they had no Dodgers, the Giants in American Football given that everyone outside the island are strong Jets fans and had Knicks to salvage the pride if every other team failed miserably. Yankees are always the biggest, the Knicks are up there in Brooklyn. Now, the city finally has its own beloved franchise thanks to Jay Z and his “crew”. Brooklyn Nets, led by Joe Johnson and Deron Williams, finally seem to be the franchise playing basketball unlike the franchise’s New Jersey yesterdays. The Nets now play in a 18,000 capacity arena at the Barclays Center (which will also house the Swedish House Mafia live for the last time ever – yes, it is progressively holding up to the significance of the Madison Square Garden). On the November 3 opener against Toronto, co-owner Jay Z was court side in what turned out to be one of the most cheered openings for a sports franchise in years. Who knows? Now that the Knicks have the Nets in New York, they finally seem to be playing their A-Game. Maybe, the Nets are the lucky charms for the Knicks? Just maybe, right?

3. Kevin McHale back in action

McHale is an absolute legend in the game of basketball. He’s won the NBA three times as a player with the Celtics and was part of the greatest front line the game has ever witnessed – Larry Bird, Robert Parish and “Mr. Torture Chamber McHale”. Today, he coaches the Rockets and has transformed them into a playoff franchise – back from the phoenix of the Tracy McGrady days. On November 10, McHale’s daughter, Sasha was hospitalized and diagnosed with Lupus. Two weeks later, she passed away in what was one of the worst possible tragedies for a father. The Celtics organization was hit hard as well. A few years ago, McHale’s jersey #32 was retired by the organization and he was a venerated soul in the city of Boston. It was no surprise that Boston took to mourning for the legend as well. After taking a month of absence for personal reasons, McHale returned to coach the Rockets for their game against the Celtics. And there was no one better to pass the regards from the Boston organization than Kevin Garnett, who was drafted by McHale for the Wolves in the 1995 Draft. The hug, outpouring of tears from McHale and the deep connection between McHale and the city of Boston has to definitely go down as one of the most touching sporting moments of the year.

2. LeBron and the NBA finals

“He’s a glory hunter”. “He’ll never win anything at Miami.” “If he does, he wouldn’t do anything – it’s all a D-Wade town down there in Florida.”

Nobody wanted LeBron to win. Nobody wanted him to enjoy the best season ever. Everyone was negative and animosity prevailed at its peak. Yet, the man played quite possibly the greatest individual season ever. He won the regular season MVP honors, was impeccably clutch during the playoffs, won the Finals and the MVP, and shunned every critic with a gold medal performance at London 2012.

The image of LeBron grabbing the NBA Finals trophy and holding it like a baby shines as the second spot in this list.

1. Linsanity at its peak

If everything was based on luck, Jeremy Lin wasn’t mean to be a prodigious talent. He had no athletic scholarship offers out of high school and when he did graduate out of Harvard, nobody in the NBA wanted to employ him. He “walked” onto the Harvard basketball team, captained his high school team which upset nationally ranked teams and set himself up for the NBA with record number of points, rebounds and assists in the Ivy League. Still, nobody wanted him! He was too feeble, people assumed or in other words, a one game wonder that would never play a good game ever after.

First the Warriors, Lin’s childhood team, guaranteed him two years but it never prevailed to a success story. On December 27, 2011, Lin’s rights were claimed by the Knicks as a backup to Mike Bibby, Toney Douglas and Iman Shumpert. Clearly, he would never play unless every one of them was injured or shot less than 25 % on the field. His last resort – go abroad. Things did change, for the better.

Jeremy Lin was given a lucky chance by Mike D’Antoni after the Celtics were battering the Knicks in the fourth quarter. After that, the world rose to take a bow for a new term: “Linsanity”. The next game saw Lin shoot 25 points, grab 5 rebounds and have 8 assists in a victory over All-Star Deron Williams and his Nets. Slowly, things began to improve for the Asian American. From sleeping on his brother’s couch at a Manhattan apartment for nearly 2 months, he now owned one. Companies signed him to lucrative sponsorships.

However, the image that defined Lin the most was his buzzer beater against Toronto. On February, Lin leaped over Jose Calderon of the Raptors to sink a game winner after which every person guaranteed to remember this rising star. Hadn’t it been for belief, hard work and sheer brilliance, Lin wouldn’t be playing in the NBA today; his stats today – 11.9 PPG and nearly 6 APG.

The game winner against Toronto ranks as the biggest story of the 2012 NBA year, and showcased to the world the emergence of a new race and term (Linsanity) in American basketball.
