This is arguably the best season by far in the last couple of years. Brushing aside all the criticisms of the new points grading system introduced in 2010, the Formula 1 World Championships is certainly heading towards an epic finale. The Championships are too close to call yet. With 7 races before the season finale in Sao Paulo, the Driver’s Championship tally looks evenly poised thanks to the roller-coaster starts, over-taking, clever strategies, unfortunate crashes and let-downs, brilliant finishes and exceptional driving.

FERNANDO ALONSO

With 3 victories already this season and multiple podium finishes, the two time world champion, Fernando Alonso finds himself at the top of the table with 164 points. As they say, “Class maketh a player”, he is indeed one of a kind racer. Although he does not have the best of Ferrari cars this season, Alonso has taken the credit due to some great driving. He will look to take maximum advantage out of his cut-down 20 points lead while pushing towards the Championships.

SEBASTIAN VETTEL

The two time World Champion and the reigning World Champion, Sebastian Vettel took the racing world by surprise with two consecutive Championships. This young German lad has grown on to become a racer to reckon with. He has proved himself over time. Unlike the last two seasons where he swooped the charts solo, this time around he has got serious company. His Championship is at great threat from various sources. While Vettel defends his title, he will have to answer the bolstering runs from his peers. If Vettel wins the F1 title this year, he will go down in history as a legend of the sport.

MARK WEBBER

Webber might have been a supporting driver to Vettel in the previous season , but with his exceptional driving throughout the season, the choice for no.1 Red Bull Racing driver will go down to the wire. Over the years, the Australian, Mark Webber has come of age to finally give him a chance to go ahead and inscribe his name into the hall of champions. With Podium-1 finishes in undoubtedly the toughest races of the season yet, winning at Monaco and backing it with a win at Silverstone has placed the Australian with 132 points, 32 points behind the leader, Fernando Alonso. He stands as much a chance to win the championships as anyone in the grid.

KIMI RAIKKONEN

Did anyone notice him in the beginning of the season? Kimi Raikkonen, the surprise package out of the bunch will create history if he wins the Championships with Lotus. Coming out of temporary retirement, Kimi has not just written off the critics who doubted his comeback to Formula 1 but he is also within reach of a second championship. Kimi has won the hearts of the fanatics of the sport with his skilled, error-free, consistent driving. Without registering a win yet, the Iceman is just 33 points behind Fernando Alonso with 131 points. With multiple podium finishes with his not so fancy Lotus, he has sent an alarming message to the other title contenders. With the big names choking, can Kimi persevere?

LEWIS HAMILTON

With the fastest machine burning the blocks, Lewis Hamilton is a driver who has always been associated with World Championships since his introduction to the premier level of racing. Winning at Canada and Hungary, Hamilton is a strong force to reckon with; he has 117 points to his name. A disappointing June-July at the office for McLaren, saw him lose grip over the leader-board. But only when you think about the race at Sao Paulo in 2008, you know what’s stored in Hamilton’s arsenal. One of the finest and most animated racers of the modern-era, a few good finishes with a shadow of luck poses a great deal of threat to the seekers of the World Championship title.

With great statistics on board, the racing world awaits 8 more incredible, mouth-watering, rival races. If nothing, it’ll be great spectacle for the sport.

Who will ultimately prevail and taste the sweetness of success?

Manchester United win their first match of this season and what a way to win. At Old Trafford, everything seems to be right for the most glorious football club in the world. After a disappointing start in the league opener at the hands of Everton at Goodison Park, the Red Devils have certainly bounced back. This win makes Manchester United’s record of scoring at home run level with Totenham Hotspurs, who share the record.

The game saw yet another time when Manchester United have come from behind to win the match. Damien Duff scored the first goal of the game, putting Fulham in front at Old Trafford. The Theatre of Dreams was heading for despair when the new signing and last season’s highest goal scorer, Robin van Persie footed in a magnificent goal. A cross towards the Dutchman saw him score a partial scissor kick into the goal. An absolutely perfect start to his United career. Van Persie’s goal saw Old Trafford come to life.

When United seemed to dominate the match with much of the possession, a strong attack from the vibrant United side few deflections only for the ball to land into the legs of the midfield maestro, Shinji Kagawa who fired in a quick, smart tap into the goal. Both the new signings score on their Old Trafford debut. For the rest of the first half of the game, it was a fairly one sided affair with United posing multiple threats in the form of few strong shots on target. Icing the cake was a header from the Brazilian defender Rafael Da Silva to extend the lead. At half time, Manchester United 3 – 1 Fulham.

When United seemed to be in the comfort zone, a second half mishap from captain Nemanja Vidic saw that shaken off. A cross into the United goal hit Vidic’s rear foot as he tried to clear the ball and in turn scored an unfortunate own goal. Manchester’s double lead was cut down to one.

Accepting the challenge, Sir Alex Ferguson makes a double switch. Wayne Rooney comes on for Shinji Kagawa and Danny Welbeck replaced Ashley Young. A real contest once again with Manchester trying to take 3 points out of the game on the other hand, Fulham attacking tour de force to try and level the match. For the next few minutes, both teams attacked fiercely. Robin van Persie and Rooney supported by Welbeck were too close yet far on several occasions. At the other side Fulham’s Dembele sprung out of nowhere to get a fantastic shot on target.

Sir Alex made the third switch of the game, veteran Ryan Giggs coming on as substitute for Anderson. Certainly, United felt the pressure into the last ten minutes of the game, as they were being denied by Fulham who refused to give up. Nervous moments for Manchester United. But, a strong support from the crowd lifted United’s game and saw them through. The Theatre of Dreams echoed “Glory Glory Man. United”. As they say, “All is well that ends well”.

Manchester United won the game by an inch. In the dying moments of the game, Wayne Rooney suffered a knee gash and was taken away in a stretcher. Manchester United have lots to take away from this game. Valencia – Van Persie – Kagawa partnership, centre back woes, brilliant movement from Rafael who once again proved his worth. United have the 3 points from this game but must lift their game before the big matches.

Sir Alex describes the arrival of Tiago Manuel Dias Correia, popularly known as Bebe as “fairytale story”. A powerful, athletic player with raw potential was acquired by United. Bebe made his senior debut in the Carling Cup win at Scunthorpe and his Premier League appearance against Sunderland a couple of weeks later. He scored when it was needed the most, with a victory over Wolves and Bursaspo in Champions League.

Bebe made few appearances in the Premier League during the 2010/2011 season featured as a premier player as the Reds won the epic 19th title. Later, he was loaned out to Turkish team Fenerbahce. He returned to Manchester in the summer of 2012 after recovering from a serious knee injury. Manchester respects good talent. And placing Bebe alongside Rooney and Chicharito during the 2012 DHL pre-season tour was an example. Bebe was very instrumental during the tour. A late goal from the boots of this young, promising talent saved United from the depths of shame in Africa. How will Sir Alex utilize this edition of pure talent, only time will tell.

With a need in the main team, Tyler Blackett, arguably one of the best young left back in Manchester United reserves. He has impressed the authorities with his skilled game and proving his talent with a 2011 FA cup win. Already being represented England as young international player, he has only to grow big from here on.

Tyler was given more football minutes than any other reserves player at the club and he has proved his dominance in the youth side and now is ready to serve with the likes Rooney and Van Persie. He brings sharp, excellent free-kicks to the party. He is one dangerous long range specialist. It’s just a time affair when this young talented lad makes his presence in the Premier League.

It’s El Clasico once again. Arguably, the biggest fixture in the world of football. Two of the richest, most successful and influential football clubs will clash horns. Well, this time the titans are determined to lift the Spanish Super Cup. This fixture over the years has evolved into not just the most anticipated match but it has also been able to garner attention beyond footballing horizons. It’s called El Clasico for a reason. It’s beyond greatness.

The teams under discussion have heavily influenced modern day football. Real Madrid embarks on the ‘Galacticos’ policy and attracts high quality players with big pay-cheques, on the other hand FC Barcelona produces world class players – thanks to La Masia. While one plays with ultimate trigger and aggresssion, the other poses a huge threats at a snail’s pace.

The biggest rivalry of the game dates back to history when the spectacle was highly influenced by politics. Under Francisco Franco dictatorship, Real Madrid enjoyed greater share of success. Madrid, being the capital, had made the others their slaves. But as they say, every force has an equivalent force acting towards the opposite direction. Catalonia opposed the Madrid rule. Soon, when strength came in the form of FC Barcelona, a civil war occured, but this time in the football field. As the whole of Catalonia sings, “mes que un club” It’s definitely more than just a club. FC Barcelona is a symbol of Catalan pride and identity.

Barring the teams, players have individual thresholds. Messi and Ronaldo will yet again see each other, try and play every mighty card in their pack to win the game for their respective teams and prove their worth at the highest arena of football. ‘Class’ is an entity which both these players carry on their backs. And with so many other great footballers in the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, Casillas, Ozil and the rest, it definitely makes for a mouth-watering clash.

Throughout the years, both teams have displayed excellent and high quality football. For the sake of it, take Barcelona’s dream team in the 1991-92 season or Real Madrid’s Galacticos in the 2000′s; the baton of pride have been passed on from one to another. It’s more than just a game. It’s about the pride of the province, it’s about fans’ happiness, it’s dominance, it’s everything.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, having lifted the La Liga trophy with Madrid, will see this encounter as a ‘special one.’ The highly successful Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola’s departure has made way for Tito Vilanova to take charge of the main team. He will keep tiki-taka alive. Vilanova will look for a positive result for the Catalan giants, and if his team manages to successfully tame Los Blancos, then he will garner great respect from the Nou Camp faithful.

El Clasico is a rivalry to the most extreme level. Firing stones at the players, sparking fire in the stadium, throwing a pig’s face on Figo(joined Madrid from Barca) and a nation-wide strike is all part of this one game. Quoting Phil Ball,“ El Classico is a re-enactment of the civil war”.

Being the only two teams not to be relegated in La Liga history along with Athletico Bilbao, each have tried to prove its dominance in Spain. 22 of the best players of the game will take charge in the green turf tonight in Camp Nou for the most epic match, to be viewed by millions around the world. This being the first of the fixtures for the season, a lot of changes is on the cards. Who will get ahead and clinch the Spanish Super Cup? Only time will tell.

With BIG new signings in the summer, Sir Alex Ferguson has already set his eyes on the Premier League trophy. The arrival of world class players like Shinji Kagawa and Robin Van Persie to Old Trafford has sent an alarming message to the rivals and other tough competitors.

Chelsea, strengthening their squad with the surprise signings of extremely talented Eden Hazard and Marco Marin, now look to dominate the Premier League after conquering FA cup and the infamous Champions League. The most anticipated match over the last two years have happened to be the Manchester Derby. With Manchester City edging past United on goal difference to win the premier league, it will look to defend their title with their already strong squad. Arsenal, as always, will somehow finish inside the top four.

The Premier League has stepped up the level of challenge and competition with display of excellent football over the years. And the teams have strived and failed. Only Champions survive the fall. Manchester United, the most glorious club in the world, have been champions to reckon with over decdes.

With no trophies last year, group stage exit from Champions League, early exit from Europa, FA and failing to defend Carling Cup have not eased the pain of losing to Barcelona in Champions League final in 2011. Sometimes teams just have a bad run even if they are playing the best quality football. Luck seems to have deserted the Red Devils.

The begining of a new season refreshes everything and gives you a lot of previlages. The two major additions have certainly strengthened the squad. With Kagawa – Rooney partnership already proving succesful in the friendlies, inclusion of RVP, who was the top scorer in the league last season have enriched the United attacking options. With so many options in the cards, what lies unanswered, What’s on Sir Alex’s mind?

The question will only be answered on Monday, 20th August, when United start their new Premier League campaign against Everton at Goodison Park. A change in formation is definately in process. With Robin Van Persie up front alongside Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa will have to make himself comfortable as a Centre attacking midfielder. Chicharito and Welbeck will make appearences from the bench.

Ashley Young and Nani will command the wings with Paul Scholes or Carrick holding the middle firm. Again, multiple options in the form of Tom Cleverly, Ryan Giggs, Anderson, Fletcher. Combination of the fittest will take charge.

The main back four will resume usual responsibilities. With the return of long standing captain Vidic has certainly cemented the centre backs. Phil Jones and Smalling will take charge of the smallest of opportunities. Highly talented new no. 7, Antonio valencia, will not only have to keep the opponents at bay in the right flank but also push himself forward to provide deep attcking options. With rumoured woes in the left back position, Patrice Evra is the favorite to guard his role in the main team unless United goes for another buy.

With so much depth in the squad, Manchester United certainly look formidable and are one of the top contenders to win the title. They have done it many times in the past and they can do it again. The Red Devils are back. United is certainly a team to watch out for.

Manchester United‘s last match of the DHL preseason tour was against Hannover 96. The match was played in the fantastic AWD Arena, Hannover. Manchester United had a poor preseason so far, and they did not look so threatening against a team which pulled off an impossible win this midweek to qualify for the Europa. The match was evenly poised since kickoff.

After a low-key start to the match, United enjoyed most of the possession. But to everybody’s surprise, Artur Sobiech fired home a goal which rebounded off Lindegaard’s gloves. 20 minutes into the game, United 0 – 1 Hannover 96. It just took a flurry of United attacks before the equaliser came in a similar fashion. Wayne Rooney curled in a fantastic shot which was punched away by the Hannover keeper, Zeiler, only to see Javier Hernandez score the second goal of the match. United 1 – 1 Hannover 96.

The second half brought all the magic and attraction in the game. With Hannover making multiple substitutions and bringing in regular players, the game suddenly became alive. And they succeeded, almost. Karim Haggui scored the second complemented by a third from Mohammed Abdellaoue. Abdellaoue netted an cheeky yet brilliant back heel. De Gea had no answer in return. Manchester United were trailing by two goals. At this moment, Hannover foresaw a comfortable victory. Manchester United 1 – 3 Hannover 96. The hosts were playing the best game of their lives.

Manchester United’s defence was sliced open. The AWD Arena backed the locals. It takes great amount of courage and confidence to pick up yourself and continue to play a losing game. But the Red Devil’s played with the same tenacity. With numerous half attacks, United were off the perch.

As the adage goes, “Win or die fighting”, United attacked tour de force. And after a bunch of failed attempts, Wayne Rooney finally tasted victory. And what a way to inject energy into the team and restore their hope. Rooney fired in from a free-kick couple yards from outside the box. Absolutely magnificent. Hannover keeper, Zeiler, stood rooted to his spot. How many times have Manchester United come from behind to win the match?

With 10 minutes remaining in the match, the 35,800 fans in Hannover were on their feet. To spice up the proceedings, a fantastic through ball to Wayne Rooney saw him through towards goal. He failed to dodge the keeper, in the course Rooney was tripped down by the busiest man of the night, Zeiler. Penalty for United. Rooney stepped-up to take the kick. With the miss against Barcelona on back of his mind, Wayne Rooney made no mistake this time. Fired it into the bottom right corner. Game on. Manchester United 3 – 3 Hannover 96. The game felt a bit stretched.

From there on, the Red Devils never rested. Bullets were sprayed over the Hannover goal, but they managed to escape without injuries. As the match headed for a draw, Manchester stalwart Luis Nani found his team-mate Rooney behind the Hannover defence, who headed the ball towards the new signing, Shingi Kagawa. Kagawa, making his mark with numerous half chances in the game already, drilled in a superb volley towards the far post leaving the goalkeeper clutching the straws. The Japanese national capped a magnificent display with his match winning goal as Manchester United powered past the hosts, Hannover 96. Manchester United FC 4 – 3 Hannover 96. The hosts never really recovered from the shock. Certainly, United are the comeback Kings. The Kagawa- Rooney combination clicked. With 5 goals coming in the second half, certainly It was a goal fest in the German city. Manchester United won the Chevrolet Cup. Overall, it was a great match of football. It is one of those rare football matches which you didn’t want it to end.

This could be the best thing to happen to you. Instead of you going traveling, the club comes to you. Yes, I’m talking about the Preseason tour. It is that time of the year when the clubs travel to different parts of the world to greet their fans.

Manchester United, the most supported club in the world, preseason tour comes in a packet filled with joy, hope, emotions and once in a lifetime opportunity to meet their stars for many living faraway from Manchester. DHL are the official sponsors for the Manchester United preseason tour 2012. The preseason tour is not only about friendly matches before the power packed season starts, but is also an opportunity for the players to experience different playing conditions, cultures and a chance to meet with their fans across the world. This makes the preseason matches as important as any other.

This year, United traveled across 3 continents and 5 countries. Starting their campaign in South Africa and finishing in Hannover, Germany. Besides South Africa and Hannover, the Red Devils traveled to China, Sweden and Norway as well.

Manchester United FC vs. Amazulu FC

1 (F.Macheda 28′) – 0

The Manchester United DHL 2102 tour got off to a winning start in Durban on 18th July, 2012 as Federico Macheda’s first half strike made all the difference in the scoreline separating the two clubs in action. The match was played in Moses Mabhida stadium. Manchester started with a unlikely squad with no big names on the cards. The match got off to a decent start. With both sides playing an attacking game, it kept the crowd lively. Soon when United got comfortable and took control of the game, Macheda struck a clean blow and powered United with the lead. Unfortunately, that was the only goal of the match. Paul Scholes, with a series of clever passes, took complete charge of the midfield. Apart from the newly promoted players, Berbatov had an excellent game. Shingi Kagawa was brought on towards the fag end of the game. After the final whistle was blown, United turned out to be the better side and deserved to win.

Manchester United vs. Ajax Cape Town

1 (Bebe 90′) – 1 (Van Graan 86′)

The 19 time English Champions continued their campaign on the soil that gave birth to the great Nelson Mandela. They faced another local club Ajax Cape Town. The city of Cape Town, known as the cape of good hope, sprung to life on 21st July, 2012 when the two clubs clashed. Kagawa started for the first time for United. They scored the first goal of the match, but United finally equalized on the 90th minute. The Portuguese winger Bebe fired home in injury time to snatch a 1-1 draw. The star of the match was undoubtedly, Bebe.

Manchester United vs. Shanghai Shenua

1 (S. Kagawa 68′) – 0

After a successful African safari, the Red Devils headed east towards the land of the dragons. The most popular football club in the Shaolin empire, Shaighai Shenua hosted Machester United for a friendly match on 25th July, 2012. With recent big signings like Drogba and Anelka, both were on the bench, the Chinese club had a rough outing altogether. With the only goal of the match coming from the Japanese star Shinji Kagawa, United edged the Shenuas. The Japanese International was nonetheless a hit with the people of Shanghai, who produced a carnival atmosphere. The other new signing, Nick Powell, started for the first time for United. With a minimal effort, Manchester United won the China Cup.

Manchester United vs. Valerenga

0 – 0

Another draw to add to Man Utd’s preseason preparations as the Reds took on Valerenga in Norway. Nemanja Vidic, coming out of injury after 6 months, played for an hour. Both teams had their chances in the game. Certainly, United was the better side of the two, but the local team from Oslo displayed resolute defending skills. The new star, Shingi Kagawa, synced well with the team. The youngsters proved themselves yet again. This has provided Sir Alex Ferguson with options and depth in the squad.

Manchester United vs. FC Barcelona

0 – 0

Barcelona win 2 – 0 on penalties. (Xavi Hernandez, Gerrard Pique)

Manchester United were beaten 2 – 0 by FC Barcelona in a reduced penalty shoot-out (three each), after an hour and a half of stalemate at the Ullevi stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden on 8th August, 2012. And yet again the Reds failed to score in the pre-season tour. Barcelona domianted the match seeing much of possession as usual. Spanish maestro, Iniesta along with Lionel Messi were a treat to the eyes. Tello, who made it to the main team couple of times last season had an incredible game.

After calming down the Catalan storm, Manhester United came right back into the match with Rooney and Nani attacking from either flanks. A brilliant save from Victor Valdes denied Rooney the goal from the penalty spot seconds before closing for half time. The game ended as a draw after 90 minutes and the match was decided on penalties.

Misses from United stalwart Luiz Nani and Ashley Young and perfect conversion from Xavi and Pique won the game for the Catalans. But United had lots to take away from this game for United. Scholes patrolled the midfield. De Gea started for the 1st time in the tour and had an impressive start with brilliant denying Messi and company. A strong team on the field showed great spirits.

Manchester United vs. Hannover 96

4 ( Chicharito, Rooney-2, Kagawa) – 3 (Artur, Haggui, Abdellaoue)

This was last game of the DHL pre-season tour 2012 outing. The Reds would aim to start hitting the net and pick up the Chevrolet Cup. The AWD Arena was treated to a quick equaliser in the first half. Chicharito equalized Artur Sobiech’s goal. A brilliant shot from Wayne Rooney was saved and it rebounded to Chicharito, who fired home a cheeky goal. United looked formidable with their quick passing, cleaver defending and most importantly, holding the ball. But shortly into the second half, substitutes Karim Haggui and Mohammed Abdellaoue netted fantastic goals. But as they say, United never give up! Wayne Rooney scored an impeccable goal that left Hannover keeper, Zeiler remained rooted to his spot. And when the going got tough, Rooney equalised from a penalty in the 82nd minute. Game on. United 3 – 3 Hannover. And a brilliant set-up from Rooney only to see Kagawa scores a magnificant goal. United 4 – 3 Hannover. United did what they do best. United came from behind to win the Chevrolet cup in a dramatic fashion and end the preseason tour on a high note.

Gerard Deulofeu of FC Barcelona.

Gerard Deulofeu Lázaro, born in the dominant house of football, is a star in waiting. Deulofeu is yet another youngster making news following the suit of Messi, Pedro, Bojan, Jordi Alba, Fabregas, Busquets etc. They all have one thing in common – La Masia!

The number 27 winger/ striker joined world’s most prestigious football youth academy La Masia in 2003, at the age of nine. One wonders whether he knew that he would be so big a prospect in a few years from then. La Masia, since long, has produced, and given to the world, excellent and world class footballers. But this is one of the most celebrated, and anticipated players from the FC Barcelona youth academy. Transforming from a young kid to a fully bloomed star, he has left all the scouts awe-struck.

Deulofeu is known for his speed, flair, agility and trickery with the ball. He has excellent close control, and his dribbling skills are similar to that of Messi. Being only 18 years of age, Deulofeu still has loads of time to develop himself, and hone his skills before exploding onto a bigger stage with Barcelona.

A former coach of his, Francisco Sanchez, had this to say about the young Spaniard, “Deulofeu is different from the rest, that’s what defines him.” “He was very individualistic, but is learning to be more of a team player.” “He is lethal in one-on-one’s and unpredictable.”

Graduating from La Masia with an A+ is no less than graduating from Harvard business school, rest assured about his career. This brings us to the point of the discussion – Who’s buying him?

With 9 goals from 35 appearances in the Barcelona B team, and coming on as a substitute for David Villa twice in the main team under Pep Guardiola’s reign, he has sent a message to the new Barcelona boss, Vilanova. He is the reason why Barca don’t need Neymar. But Barcelona, already armed with the likes of Messi, Pedro, and Villa controlling the front row, and Alexis Sanchez strengthening the pillars, Deulofeu might have to be blessed with a certain amount of luck or else, Vilanova will be pushed to either loan him for a couple of years or sadly, sell him.

Deulofeu, on the Catalan giants, says, “This isn’t a team, this is a family”. Barcelona would love to keep him, and he would love to continue with world’s best club, sharing space with Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi, the greatest of the game. Beyond the Catalan giants though, Deulofeu is the radar of major clubs in Europe. With every increase in the level of competition, there is a proportional increase in the need for footballers of the caliber of Deulofeu.

Recently, Premier League teams Arsenal, Liverpool, and Queens Park Rangers have shown deep interest in this young emerging star to power their team. QPR have asked for a loan period of at least 2 years, while Arsenal have made it clear they will only buy Deulofeu, and not loan him. With a Euro 7.5M benchmark, Arsene Wenger will have to look into his funds before he adds this fresh and powerful weapon to his Arsenal. In other news, Rodgers from Liverpool would be overly pleased to have Deulofeu join him in his journey to reconstruct Liverpool. Today, Liverpool are leading the hunt, but you never know if there’s another twist in the tale for this legend-in-the-making.

Surely, with comparisons already made to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, the greatest of the sport, this young lad is the next big thing!

No war is ever forgotten in time, nor is the rivalry. Above all was 2009 and history repeating itself again in 2011, the only difference being Wayne Rooney scored a goal. Manchester United and FC Barcelona have a lot in common. They win matches. But when the best in the world meet each other, hell freezes over.

One plays offensive and the other with patience. With great matches already in their cart, this is the most anticipated fixture in the world.

The rivalry dates back to May 21, 1984, when United clinched an impossible in the better half of Manchester. With 2-0 down in Camp Nou, the return leg at Old Trafford awaited fireworks. The passed out generation of footballers came from behind to power the Reds into the European Cup winner’s Cup semi-final. Barcelona seeked their almost seemingly successful shot at the coveted trophy before Manchester stopped the raging bulls.

Continuing to dominate Europe with football, the teams under discussion have proved their worth over and over again. Soon after the ban on English playing in Champions League was lifted, the Lions from the north roared loud. Yet again, Europe saw the world’s most glorious club, Manchester United cruising into the finals of Cup winners Cup finals. And they faced a familiar but stronger opponent in the face of FC Barcelona. Johan Cruyff’s dream team were the clear favorites this time around. As the adage goes, “Even the big guns misfire”. But that day, a legend was born in the form of Mark Hughes. Unfortunate for the opposite side. United beat Barca 2-1. Manchester United tasted the sweetness while the Catalan giants looked upon their rivals receiving the greatest honor in European football.

Skipping through years, Manchester United achieved the greatest reward in European football in 1999 at Camp Nou, the bull’s pen. Adding insult to the injury was the Catalans’ defeat at the hands of their bitter rivals in 2008 Champions League semi-final with only one goal by Paul Scholes making all the difference, taking United into the finals of the competition. United went on to win the finals against Chelsea FC in an epic encounter in Moscow.

When Manchester United seemed to be undisputed champions of Europe, the La Liga champions posed another good contest in 2009. Keeping history aside and doubling their odds, Barcelona was in its greatest pursuit. When the world reckoned them as two of the best teams ever, the contest to be the number one and to dominate Europe was on the cards. Champions League Final. MUFC vs FCB. Rome was set to host one of the greatest encounters in time to come. Icing the cake was the road to the Ballon D’OR. Cristiano Ronaldo single handedly, largely, taking United to Rome and on the other end, the football world’s new greatest to-be, Lionel Messi. Finally, Barcelona managed to break the Red-Devils deadlock. With an all round brilliance from the Spanish giants and individual excellence from Messi, FC Barcelona beat Manchester United 2-0. The Catalans were now the Kings of Europe. What better way to win the greatest prize than thrashing their long standing rivals.

Barcelona, over the years, not only won in Europe but also dominantly ruled in the backyard. Already arming its arsenal with the likes of Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Villa etc., Barcelona found a new weapon in the form of Tiki-Taka style of play. Largely criticized by the critics, it just works magic for them. They love it and they do what they love. Over the years, It has troubled the best teams in the world.

With no teams devising an answer to their dominant rather ball possession style of play, they were touted to be one of the greatest team in the book of records. Pep Guardiola’s team had achieved what is said to be – the impossible. 11 trophies out a possible 13 is an incredible record. May 28th, 2011, Football Club Barcelona was into its greatest ever endeavor. A very familiar arena – Wembly and against a very familiar team, Manchester United. Beyond the threats posed by the English Champions, Barcelona looked formidable. Wembly was set, flags were flying high, emotions enveloping the atmosphere. The world looked upon for the greatest match ever to happen. From the dizzy heights of the Wembly stadium, to the atmosphere soaked players’ dressing room, every moment seemed to the roar of 87,695 fans – none more so than the ultimate honor of emerging from the players’ tunnel and following in the footsteps of many legends. Barcelona dominated the game. With a beautiful goals coming from the boots of Pedro, Messi and Villa, saw FC Barcelona taking home the trophy. The only difference between 2009 and 2011 was that Wayne Rooney scored a goal. Barca not only did disprove the critics again, but also proved their worth to the world. Once again, they were the mighty Kings of Europe.

Keeping in mind the vindictive nature of the Catalans, Barcelona and their tremendous track record, Man. United vs Barcelona is always a mouth watering clash. When it comes to this fixture, there is unfinished business. Billed as the biggest sporting club game, the answer to this epic encounter is another great match of football. The beginning to the new season of year long footballing action with the clash of the titans is a treat for the eyes. The world will once again experience a great game on Wednesday, 8th August, 2012.

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY – JULY 29: Kimi Raikkonen of Finland and Lotus

Scripting the incredible moments from the Hungarian GP 2012, I could only go back in time to say, “Every second counts”.

A super exciting weekend on the cards, where every driver was going all out on the Drivers’ Championship. After an intense Qualifying session on Saturday, Hamilton clinched a historic 150th pole for McLaren. Already taking the Formula1 world by surprise, the rising star, Romain Grosjean shared the starting grid alongside Hamilton. Kimi qualified and was set to start the race in the third row in 5th position. Budapest was heading for one great encounter on Sunday. With Lotus placed at row-1 and row-3, the team looked formidable!

The 24 race cars were set for an exciting race. The grid was filled with smoke as the cars zoomed off when the 5 red lights went off. Lotus had bettered positions. Running on hard compound tyres, Kimi clocked incredible timings in the early laps. A very satisfying race for team Lotus. Down to clever strategy, clinical error-free driving or call it sheer class, Kimi was the race leader in Budapest with 35 laps down. A poor pit stop by Hamilton saw Kimi extend his lead to 14+ seconds at the top.

By this time, Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Romain Grosjean were the order of the race. Kimi set the arena ablaze with his fantastic driving, doing best what he’s known for, setting one fastest lap after another. Kimi gets the best out of his car given come what may! He supported the clause with another turbulent and animated driving in Budapest.

With 25 laps remaining, Raikkonen took full control of his car and the race as well. Kimi burned the rubber to the fullest. He was heading quick towards Chequered Flag. Analyzing the situation, Kimi was expected to just about make it ahead of Hamilton out of the pit lane. He was driving the best race of the comeback season until lightning struck! The Lotus team choked. A very disappointing 11+ seconds pit stop caused Kimi his lead. Raikkonen, out of the pit-lane, was tested by his team-mate Romain Grosjean. He survived a close contest for the second spot leaving Grosjean trailing.

Kimi trailed a 3 second deficit over Hamilton. It’s painful to see the sweetness go by when you give all that you’ve got. But, it wasn’t over yet! Kimi had 21 laps to recover on one hand and Hamilton’s tethering tyres on the other adding to his fore. He bettered his timings on each lap and got as close as trailing 0.4 seconds to race leader, Lewis Hamilton. Kimi played every possible card from his pack and unfortunately, Hamilton answered each one with a better combination. Down to the last two laps, Kimi raced all in 300Mph+, DRS, excellent cornering while zipping through the chicanes. The cacophony from Kimi’s Lotus was terrible. The Iceman’s Lotus was pushed beyond its limits.

Hamilton survived all the threatening challenges from the Flying Finn. He went past the chequered flag. Kimi finished second. It took Kimi an hour, 41 minutes and six seconds to complete the race, one second behind Lewis Hamilton. It maybe painful but a Lotus 2-3 podium finish can be called a successful race. But what if Kimi had won the race? Certainly, Kimi had his moments in the race. Analyzing the race in Budapest, the 2nd Pit-stop, a long 11sec haul from team Lotus caused Kimi Raikkonen the glory. It would have been Kimi’s first victory since his criticized Formula 1 return. Nonetheless, we all loved watching the Flying Finn in the golden and black combat racing through the circuit and popping the MuMM at the podium. But Team Lotus and Kimi Raikkonen would have to account for the cheap loss of pole position. It’ll be just another Sunday when the Finnish National anthem is played!

They called him F1′s bad boy. They labeled him a trouble-maker. They bawled on him as a reckless, nonchalant, enterprising and a mediocre driver when the world of racing thumped its conclusion on him. They all had their say. But for this man, Kimi Raikkonen, all the criticisms freewheeling around was just sheer nonsense.

Quoting Chris Dyer,“Kimi tends not to be distracted by what else is going on and he focuses on the job we are doing. It is very much a perception from the outside that he isn’t focused – we don’t see that. When he’s in the car, briefings, debriefings, he’s always on the job and very focused.”

Kimi Matias Raikkonen, popularly known as The Flying Finn, started racing since his childhood in hometown Espoo, Finland. Speed, excellence, perfection, risk and danger are his distinguishing qualities. His exceptional racing at the junior arena was noticed and he debuted in Formula 1 in 2001 with Sauber-Petronas.

He started his F1 career with mixed results. He twice came close to finishing on the podium but a sprawling 7 unfinished, retired races juxtaposed his pace and talent. He was received by few promising comments on propelling his talent to the next level and even more conflicting critics doubting his ability to drive within car limits. Did he make it? Yes, he did. Not only did he disprove all the critics by replacing fellow countryman and F1 great Mika Hakkinen in the Mclaren, but also made an impressive and paramount beginning to put him as Mclaren’s front runner.

It was in 2003 when Kimi left the world awe-inspired. Raikkonen challenged then 5 time world champion Michael Schumacher at the highest degree of speed, excellence and competition. Had Kimi throttled past Rubens Barichello through the final chicane of the final lap in the intense 2003 Japanese GP, he would’ve been the world champion. But Kimi finished second only to give away the world championship to Michael Schumacher who was chasing his dream to be the best Formula 1 racer.

With a relatively quiet 2004, racing past the others only on one occasion, he failed to entertain his fans and critics en route.

2005 saw the best of the Iceman as he raced all out with perfection and elegance. Whether down to clever strategy, hard work or just mere following the others, Raikkonen looked formidable. He pulled a rare card out of the pack in the Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka Circuit. Kimi started 17th in the grid and the Finn claimed victory for Mclaren in arguably the greatest race in Formua One history. He went past Giancarlo Fiscichella in the lap to finally have tasted success in what was to be an unlucky circuit. Kimi Raikkonen was already looking like a champion-in waiting. Kimi had an exceptional year in terms of podium finishes and being the only one to challenge then reigning world champion Fernando Alonso beside Schumacher, who burned down all the fuel in his tank to try and clinch the title going out on retirement. Yet once again, Kimi was too close yet too far. He finished second in the Drivers’ Championships with 7 wins in the season.

By now, Kimi was talked about by everyone in Formula 1 and around for his animated driving, ability to get the best out of his car, illustrious pace, celebrated strategy, craving for more victories. For one thing, luck seemed to have deserted him. If Kimi had even a teaspoon of Alonso’s or Schumacher’s luck in his career, his stats would have been more sensational than they already are.

Kimi quit Mclaren and signed a record breaking deal with Scuderia-Ferrai in 2007 to be the highest paid driver since the inception of this sport. Highly anticipated to win the championships, he had the perfect start to the season winning the Australian GP and more to complement that. But soon, Raikkonnen was tested. Car problems, retired races put him in great doubt of the championships.

When it seemed a distant hope, Kimi struck back. With a spectacular win at Silverstone and backing it with a podium finish the SPA, a revival was on the cards. In Hungarian GP, he was the king of the scarlet. Down to the last two occasions left to burn the rubber, Kimi had a 17 point deficit over Championship leader, Lewis Hamilton. With a win in the penultimate race, the stage was set for the greatest ever Formula 1 showdown. Sao Paulo awaited the champions to zip through its acuminous, penetrative and hypersonic circuit. A win at Sao Paulo wouldn’t do any good to Kimi, but mistakes by Alonso and Hamilton would open up the window. Going past the chequered flag and a strong drive from team-mate Massa constituted the Ferrari 1-2. Now the world waited for the other contenders to cross the line. Did Kimi make it?

YES! It was overwhelming and incredible scenes in the Ferrari garage when the race finished and Kimi had just won the World Championship by a single point. By bettering double world champion Alonso and F1′s newest superstar, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi had secured Ferrrari their first driver title of the post-Schumacher era. It may have been a long time coming, but what a one to win!

Next season Kimi had a relatively passive season. In 2009, Kimi quit Ferrari and Formula 1. F1 had just lost one of its best drivers who was a sheer pleasure to watch. Kimi’s love for speed continued when he raced in rally racing for 2 years.

In early 2012, rumors quoting Kimi’s return to F1 developed. Kimi’s love for the highest level of the sport couldn’t keep him away for long. Kimi signed with Lotus to make it six world champions at the start of the grid at the start of the season beginning in Melbourne. Critics doubted Kimi’s decision of returning to F1 as to what will Kimi bring to the party?

Kimi proved all his critics wrong with his strong comeback with 2 Podium finishes in the first 6 races and other satisfying finishes in the season. The Iceman has come off age keeping his head down and putting energy into car to bring out the maximum performance from his not so fancied Lotus. The Flying Finn has reborn.

Quoting legendary Jackie Stewart, “It’s brilliant to see Kimi and the Lotus flower”.

Brushing away all criticism, you remember Suzuka 2005 and other great races. Kimi’s thumping championship challenges in 2003, ’05, how he has always been best on ‘great drivers’ circuit’. You remember that great drivers just make things happen and you imagine what Kimi could do with your car, what difference he alone can make. Kimi was never gone. Kimi brings with him a universe of talent, speed, focus, passion, consistency, and clinical driving. He will always be remembered as fast, inspiring, adrenalin and funny driver who always gave his best. And when the 5 red lights go off,….watch out for the ghost machine in black and golden combat. Hail KIMI !!

The Portugal National team.

The Portuguese, who were never touted to reach the semis, have evolved in recent weeks to become the team to beat. They started their Euro 2012 campaign trapped in a group infamously known as the ‘Group of Death’ and their chances of prevailing beyond the preliminary stages of this event were minimal. It was but for sheer team effort and individual brilliance that Portugal have found themselves in the semis of Euro ’12.

The Portuguese got set for action in Arena Lviv, Ukraine against Germany on 9th July, 2012. A late brace by Mario Gomez saw Germany home. Portugal’s tactics were highly criticized. From there on, it was considered improbable for Portugal to survive the group of death. Heading into their second and most crucial encounter against Denmark, who managed to defeat the mighty Dutch, Portugal at least needed to draw if not to win, to stand any chance of progressing in the competition. Portugal, aware of the odds, took a comfortable lead in the fixture with goals coming from Helder Postiga and Real Madrid center back Pepe. Portugal’s advantage was neutralized by a Nicolas Bendtner double as the match was heading for a draw. With barely minutes remaining in the game and Portugal on the brink of elimination, substitute Silvestre Varela found the net just in time with an incredible goal to power Portugal to victory with those very precious 3 points.

Unfortunately, the Portuguese captain and Real Madrid superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo failed to rise to the occasion in yet another international match. With Ronaldo misfiring, despair and desperation had taken its toll on the 27 year old winger. Adding insult to the injury were the criticisms from the media and the traveling fans.

Quoting Einstein, “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.”

It was as if it was scripted for Cristiano Ronaldo, who left no stone unturned, as Portugal thrashed their biggest and the toughest opponent in the group. It was all over. Ronaldo scored two magnificent goals against Netherlands to send Portugal to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012. Portugal survived the group of death.

And all of a sudden, the Portuguese were touted as favorites to win their quarter-finals fixture against the Czech Republic. Portugal dominated the match with great vigour while Petr Cech was kept busy at the other end to deny the Portuguese. Ronaldo was magical on that night, converting well-architectured attempts from Manchester United stalwart Luiz Nani, only to find the woodwork twice in the game. No other team hit the woodwork more than Portugal with four out of the five attempts coming from the Portuguese captain. After many unsuccessful attempts on target, Ronaldo’s thumping near-post header was the only goal of the game. Ronaldo had rediscovered his form. He capped a magnificent display with a match-winning goal as Portugal powered past Czech Republic and into the semi-finals of the European Championships 2012.

And now, they face the defending and World Champions Spain in the semis. Portuguese coach Paulo Bento is well aware of the threat posed by the Spanish Armada. Certainly, Portuguese are the underdogs in this nail-biting clash. But looking at Ronaldo’s destructive, goal-scoring form, I believe the Spaniards will have to device an efficient plan to silence him. Ronaldo could certainly be the difference between the two sides. He is certainly one of the best players of his generation and if could inspire his side to win the coveted trophy, the Portuguese captain will be remembered down the years as a legend in the same class as Eusebio and Luiz Figo.

Losing to Greece at home eight years back was very painful for Ronaldo as a youngster. Now he has the chance to engrave his name into the books of history. The preparations are made, the stage is set, flags are flying high and the build up to the judgement day is intense with wordy wars, hatred, belief and tons of hope, just to be crowned as the Champions
of Europe.

Will Portugal, the underdogs, taste the sweetness of victory or will they succumb to a despairing defeat?
