Indian rowers rack up 7 medals in the Asian Rowing Championships

India ended its campaign at the recently concluded Asian Rowing Championships with a tally of seven medals – five silver and two bronze, as reported by the New Indian Express. The tournament took place between 24th – 28th September in Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park, Beijing, China, the designated venue for the rowing, canoeing and marathon swimming competitions of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games as well as rowing events of the Beijing Paralympics.

The Indian team of Kapil Sharma, Jaswinder Singh, Rajesh Varma and Mohammad Azad bagged a silver in the men’s fours, with a time of 6:03.25s. The men’s lightweight double sculls saw Vikram Singh and Shokendar Tomar collect a silver medal, finishing in 6:41.59s.

Roopendra Singh and Sonu Laxmi Narin added to India’s haul of silver medals with a time of 6:41.74s in the men’s double sculls. The octet of Davinder Singh, Naveen Kumar Borraiya, Suchcha Singh Tomer, Gurinder Singh, Kapil Sharma, Jaswinder Singh, Rajesh Verma, Mohd Azad and Lakshman Rohith Maradapa secured India’s last team silver in the men’s eights.

With a time of 7:18.41s, Datta Baba Bhokanal notched up India’s lone single’s silver medal in the men’s single’s sculls. A mettlesome effort by Dushyant Chauhan in the face of a ligament injury saw him capture a bronze medal in the lightweight men’s singles sculls with a time of 7:03.55s. Davinder Singh and Naveen Kumar Borraiya clocked 6:46.64s in the men’s pairs event to round off the Indian medal haul with a bronze

The tournament saw almost absolute monopoly by hosts China, who snared fifteen out of sixteen gold medals. The lone remaining gold medal went to Iran. India were unfortunate in missing out on the golds by narrow margins. Indian coach Ismail Baig stated that India stood second in the overall rankings at the end of the tournament.

The tournament witnessed participation from four hundred officials and athletes from 23 different National Federations.
