2015 Rugby World Cup: Argentina get first win as they cruise past Georgia 54-9

Action from the match between Argentina and Georgia

The Pumas scored seven tries en route to a comfortable 54-9 victory over Georgia to get back to winning ways in their second match in Pool C in Gloucester.

After having given the All Blacks a tough time in the opener, before being overawed in the end, Argentina rebounded from that defeat with a superb performance, earning the bonus point too thanks to their seven tries.

Six of those tries came in the second half as part of a stirring performance that left the Georgians with no answer. Georgian captain Mamuka Gorgodze was sin-binned which aided the Argentines as they ran roughshod over Georgia.

This after a first half that was rather mellow with the kicking game taking precedence for both teams. Argentine fly-half Nicolas Sanchez and Georgian full back, Merab Kvirikashvili, had 18 points between them.

Sanchez opened the scoring with a drop-goal from close distance and Tomas Lavanini then scored the only try of the first half soon after. However, penalties dragged the Pumas down as they conceded seven in the first half, which kept Kvirikashvili and Georgia in the game.

That led to the possibility of another upset looming, after Georgia had beaten Tonga in their opener at this very ground, just six days ago. With the score at 14-9, the Georgians were very much in touching distance.

Al that was to change though in the second half.Gorgodze was shown a yellow card and sent to the sin bin within three minutes of the second period after a foul at a breakdown.

The floodgates soon opened as scrum half Tomas Cubelli scored the first of five tries and Sanchez converted. Wing Juan Imhoff was next in line as he made a powerful run down the left for the Pumas’ third try overall.

Santiago Cordero scored the fourth and replacement scrum half Martin Landajo scored the fifth.Cordero and Imhoff then scored their second try each of the game and Argentina’s sixth and seventh overall as Los Pumas crossed the half century mark and registered a comfortable win in the end.

Georgia will next play New Zealand next Friday in Cardiff while Argentina travel to Leicester to play Tonga next Sunday.
