What to expect from the Coimbatore Marathon 2015

The 2014 edition of the Coimbatore Marathon

The third edition of the Coimbatore Marathon is set to take place on the 4th of October. The event has continued to get an overwhelming response with this year getting over 10,000 participants.

Former Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan was among those at the pre-event briefing, and unveiled the official t-shirts and medals for the marathon.

Conducted by Coimbatore Cancer Foundation

The event is conducted annually by the Coimbatore Cancer Foundation, which was founded in 1991, the marathon is conducted every year on the first Sunday of October, with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Coimbatore Marathon is recognised by the Tamil Nadu Athletic Association & the Coimbatore District Athletic Association. It comprises three events, a 21.1 km run (half marathon), a 10km run and a 5km run/walk. Winners receive prize money worth over Rs. 2 lakh and there are separate categories for men and women.

Prize money

The prize money for the half marathon (21.1 km run) is Rs. 25,000, Rs.15,000 and Rs.10,000 for the first, second and third placed finishers respectively, the top three places in the 10 km category prize money will receive Rs. 15,000, Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively.

A Veterans category has also been started this year and the prize money for that category, and the top three finishers in the Half Marathon will be Rs. 15,000, Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively.

For the 10 km run, the first and second place will receive Rs.10,000 and Rs. 7,500 respectively, with the third place finisher taking home Rs. 5.000.

Route and amenitites

The marathon route will have aid stations, hydration points, medical facilities, ambulance services, route markers, course marshals. The marathon will start at the Nehru Stadium and will end in the same place after going to through most of the city like the Race course and and few other major places.

Coimbatore is expected to be warm tomorrow, but quite cloudy with scattered thunderstorms, so runners will have to deal with significant humidity in addition to possible rain.
