2016 ISSF Junior World Cup: India placed 3rd with 9 medals

Young shooters from India have put up a brilliant display thus far at the ongoing ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany.

With three golds, four silvers and two bronze, they’re currently placed 3rd, behind only Italy and Russia and one position ahead of the host nation by merit of their total medal count. Russia have the same tally of golds and silvers as India but are placed second having won 6 bronze medals.

In the men’s category, Rituraj Singh has been on fire as he opened his account with gold in the 25m Standard Pistol individual event with a leading score of 569, eight more than France’s Clement Greffier at 561 who finished 2nd.

Rituraj then joined his compatriots Shivam Shukla and Arjun Das at the Team event of the same discipline and with a score of 1661, pipped the French side by a narrow margin of two points to fetch his second gold at the tournament.

The women’s team, formed by Gaayathri Nithyanandam, Sonika and Ayushi Podder clinched gold at the 50m Rifle Prone competition. Gaayathri went on to win bronze in the individual format of the same.

In the Women’s 10m Air Pistol, despite an impressive performance Yashaswini Singh Deswal missed out on first place finish by a whisker, with a total score of 197.7.

The ISSF Junior World Cup comes to a close on Friday.
