Will Chain Singh be on the podium at Rio next year?

Hailing from the mountainous regions of the Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir, Chain Singh is a man on mission. The 26-year-old Subedar in the Indian Army, is one of India’s hopefuls for a podium finish at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Chain Singh was trained at the Army Marksmanship Unit(AMU), Mhow under the guidance of world class experienced coaches. AMU is known for producing many medal winning shooters for the Army and India.

Singh is known for his never say die attitude and the commitment that he has towards his goal, something that his mentors believe is what separates him from the rest.

He had won the Gold medal at the 2014 Asian Championships in Kuwait in the 10m Air Rifle event. He made India proud at the Asian Shooting Championship in 2014 which were being held in Delhi by clinching the gold medal in the team event in 10m Rifle Shooting. He also brought a lot of happiness and a sense of pride among his fellow comrades back in the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU).

AMU commanding officer Col Lalit Sharma said all the shooters worked together as a unit and Chain’s gold medal is the result of his rigorous training, both mental and physical, under world class coaches. He also said that the main aim of the team is to clinch a gold medal in the team event at Olympics, with a lot of hopes lying on Chain Singh.

He recently finished eighth in the 50m Rifle 3 Position event of the ISSF World Cup in Gabala, Azerbaijan to become the seventh Indian to book a ticket for the Olympics which are going to take place next year. The youngster thanked NRAI, the Indian Army, and Olympic Gold Quest for his success, and promised to try his best to win a medal for India in his event.

His teammates and mentors believe he can give an exceptional performance in the Olympics, if he continues to train and perform the way he has been doing this year. The young lad is very much determined to bring laurels to his country.

Singh had also won a bronze medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Position Men’s Finals in the Asian Games, Incheon in 2014. With a score of 441.7 points, he finished behind two Chinese shooters. With all eyes being on well-renowned shooters like Gagan Narang, Singh didn’t have much pressure on him in the event. While his more fancied compatriots like Narang and Sanjeev Rajput finished 12th and 15th respectively, in the qualifiers, Singh finished seventh in his qualification, to move on to the next round.

Singh has been consistently giving amazing performances during the ISSF World Cup series this year, with his previous scores being 1173/1200 in Korea, 1172/1200 in USA and 1180/1200 in Germany. He has also been placed within the top 10 shooters on a consistent basis. His performance in the field has given a lot of hopes to his mentors and fellow countrymen, who hope that this aspiring star can clinch a medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics and make his nation proud.
