Commonwealth Games 2014: Apurvi Chandela wins gold in the 10m Air Rifle event; Ayonika Paul clinches silver

Apurvi Chandela shot brilliantly to win gold for India

Apurvi Chandela won another for India in shooting in the 10m Air Rifle event at the Barry Buddon shooting range. She had qualified fourth to the finals, while Ayonika had qualified in 8th place.

Apurvi was quick to rise to the top of the table after some impressive shooting in the early stages of the final. Her compatriot Ayonika made her way up the table during the second half with consistent scores of over 10.

Singapore's Jasmine Ser was looking to storm away with the top honours at one point, but could not put up excellent scores in front of both Indian shooters.

Jasmine was eliminated after 16 shots. Malaysia's Nur Suryani Taibi was closing on Ayonika with only 0.5 points separating them in the 17th shot.

The Indian held her nerve on the 18th shot and did not allow the Malaysian to overtake her as she prevailed by 0.4 points after 18 shots. Nur Suryani had to settle for bronze.

It was an all India battle for the gold as Apurvi and Ayonika went for glory in the final two shots. Apurvi was too good for Ayonika as she held onto her lead after 20 shots.

India now have 13 medals on the board with Apurvi Chandela, Prakash Nanjappa and Ayonika Paul claiming podium finishes so far.
