16-year-old Indian shooter Malaika Goel has claimed a silver medal in the 10m air pistol event at the Barry Buddon shooting range in Glasgow.

Malaika was the only Indian left in the top three after Heena Sidhu bowed out with 95.8 points. Heena was the favourite to win gold after topping the qualification round, but could not put up impressive scores in the initial stages of the match. Heena finished in 7th position. The World No. 4 Heena had won silver at the 2010 Delhi games.

Malaika, however, was splendid as she remained in the hunt for the top honours till the very end. It was a nail-biting finish as Singapore’s Shun Xie Teo edged her out in the final round.

Both shooters scored 10 points in their final attempt, but Xie Teo beat the Indian by 1.5 points after 20 rounds with her overall tally.

Malaika hails from the industrial town of Ludhiana in Punjab and broke into the top-15 in the world at the age of 16. Her best so far has been World No.13 in May.

Malaika, who is supported by Olympic Gold Quest, picked up the sport in 2008 when the country was celebrating its first individual Olympic medal, thanks to rifle shooter Abhinav Bindra's exploits in Beijing in the 10m air rifle event. The Ludhiana girl is one of several athletes qualified for the Glasgow games to be assisted by Anglian Medal Hunt Company, who help young talent achieve international success.

Bindra and Heena are Malaika's role models. Malaika had won bronze in the Asian youth championships this year.

Canadian Dorothy Ludwig walked away with the bronze after scoring 177.2 points.

Final scores:

Rank Name Points
1 Shun Xie Teo 198.6
2 Malaika Goel 197.1
3 Dorothy Ludwig 177.2
