Jitu Rai

Jitu Rai, an Indian shooter who was born in Nepal represents the nation in 10 m and 50 m air pistol events. Rai, who is currently the nation’s top shooting star shifted to India with his mother and four siblings in 2006 after his father passed away.

Jitu Rai is in scintillating form this year as he has won six medals which includes three golds and three silvers.

Rai’s dream run started from June 2014 when he grabbed three world cup medals in less than ten days. The 27-year-old shooter won the gold in 10m Air Pistol event at the ISSF World Cup in Maribor, just two days after winning Silver at the 50m Pistol event, and just nine days after claiming a silver medal at the previous world cup stage in Munich on June 11. With this win, Rai also became the first Indian shooter to win two medals in a single world cup

Just a few days ago Rai won the silver medal in men’s 50 m pistol event at World Championships in Spain thus securing the first Olympic Quota for the nation.

Rai’s great show continued at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games too as he begged the Gold medal after creating a Games record in both qualification and final rounds in 50m pistol event.

Rai who is also known as the ‘Pistol King of India’ was not always as sharp as he currently is. But, it was his hard and determinant efforts that resulted in his selection in the Army shooting team in 2010-11. He learnt a lot from his seniors and try to gain the main aspects of shooting.

Rai the gave nation the first gold of the 17th Asian Games in Incheon yesterday. He is only the fourth Indian shooter to have won the gold medal at the Asian Games after Jaspal Rana in 1994 and 2006 and shotgun experts Randhir Singh in 1978 and Ronjan Sodhi in 2010.

Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav announced a cash reward of Rs. 50 lakhs for the ace shooter. “Through his dedication, hard work and talent, Rai has put up a good show in the Asian Games and earned laurels for the country and state where he honed his skills for a long time," the Chief Minister said in a statement.

"His feat would inspire the youth of the country to work hard and dedicatedly for achieving their goals," he added.

We all hope that he would continue his sparkling efforts at the 2016 Olympics and win more medals in the near future. We all wish him congratulations for his great effort shown in Incheon and hope he would shine like colours in the near future and would help us to witness more proud moments for the country.
