2015 World Cup: South Africa v West Indies - List of world records broken

South Africa captain AB de Villers lit up the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) atmosphere on Friday with an astonishing 162* off 66 balls against the West Indies in a Pool B encounter of the 2015 ICC World Cup. Coming into bat at No.5, the 31-year-old smashed 17 fours and 8 sixes to help his side post a mammoth 408 for 5 in 50 overs. A number of records were broken during the match. Here is a compilation of them:

#1 Fastest 150 scored in an ODI

AB de Villiers reached the 150-run mark off just 64 balls, which is now the record for the fastest 150 scored in an One-Day International. The 31-year-old right-hander is also the record-holder for the fastest 50 and fastest 100 in ODIs. He achieved the first two feats, also against the West Indies, during his breathtaking knock 149* off 44 balls in Johannesburg last month.

The Proteas captain scored his century off just 52 balls today, which is the second fastest hundred scored in a World Cup game. The record is held by Kevin O’Brien who scored a ton off just 50 balls against England in Bangalore during the 2011 World Cup.

#2 Highest team total in Australia

South Africa’s score of 408 for 5 in their 50 overs is the highest score by a team in Australia. The previous highest was 372 for 2, which the West Indies scored against Zimbabwe at the Manuka Oval in Canberra a few days ago.

It is also the second highest total made in a World Cup innings. The record is held by India, who scored 413 for 5 in 50 overs against Bermuda in the 2007 edition of the tournament held in the Caribbean.

This is also the first occasion when a team has posted a score in excess of 400 in Australia.

#3 Fastest to reach 3,000 runs as captain

During the course of his innings, De Villiers also brought up 3000 ODI runs as a captain in 50-over cricket. The right-hander reached the mark in 60 ODIs, which is the fastest for any captain.

The middle-order batsman has now scored 380 runs against the West Indies in World Cup cricket, which is the most by any player against a particular opposition in the history of the tournament.

His score of 162*is also the highest score made by a batsman while batting at No. 5 in ODIs, eclipsing the 156 made by Andrew Symonds against New Zealand in 2005. The score made by him on Friday is also the highest made by any captain in a World Cup encountersince Viv Richardss 181 against Sri Lanka in Karachi during the 1987 edition of the tournament.

#4 Most centuries against any opposition in World Cups

The hundred scored by De Villiers on Friday was the fourth in his World Cup career, three of which have comeagainst the West Indies: it isthe most number of centuries scored by any player against a particular team in the tournaments history.

The right-hander scored a 130-ball 146 in the 2007 edition at Grenada, which helped his side post 356 for 4 in 50 overs. He scored a ton against them came in 2011 as well - a 105-ball 107 in New Delhi.

But probably his most devastating performance against them came on Fridaywhen he scored 162* runs off 66 balls, which included 17 fours and 8 sixes.

His other hundred came against Netherlandsin the 2011 edition when he scored 134 off 98 balls in Mohali.

#5 Most runs conceded by a bowler in 50-over World Cups

Jason Holder gave away 104 runs in his 10 overs, of which 76 were scored by AB de Villiers off 21 balls. The Caribbean captain was having a great day, having conceded only 9 runs in his first 5 overs, which also included 2 maidens; but all hell broke loose in his last 2 overs – 48th and 50th over of the innings – where he was taken for 64 runs.

This is the highest number of runs conceded by a bowler in 50-over World Cups and second-highest of all-time in the history of the tournament, only next to former New Zealand pacer Martin Snedden’s figures of 12-1-105-2 against England at the Oval in 1983.

34 runs were taken off Holder’s 9th over: the second highest number of runs conceded by a bowler in a World Cup match.

#6 Highest margin of victory in World Cup history

West Indies were all out for 151, thereby losing the match by 257 runs. This is the joint-highest margin of victory ever recorded by a team while batting first in World Cup history, level with India’s thrashing of Bermuda in 2007.

Imran Tahir led the wicket-taking charts by picking up 5 wickets. It could have been worse for the Caribbeans, who were 63-7 at one point, if not for captain Jason Holder’s 48-ball 56 that saved face. Opener Dwayne Smith was the second-highest scorer with a 34-ball 31. No other batsman crossed the 25-run mark. This is also West Indies’ biggest loss in ODIs in terms of runs, beating their 209-run defeat against the Proteas in 2004.
