#5 4 for 32 vs Australia

World Cup 1999 Semi-Finals and Allan Donald: what do you remember? Probably very few remember it for his fantastic bowling performance. He picked up 4 wickets in his 10 overs at the cost of just 32 runs to restrict Australia to a modest 213. He swung the ball and left batsmen clueless in this match. In the end, he became a villain with the bat while refusing a single which cost his side a place in the World Cup finals.

#4 6 for 59 vs Australia

It was the first Test of the 3 match series in Australia. The Boxing Day Test at MCG was witnessed by a huge crowd. In the first innings of the match, Alland Donald kept the hosts on their toes all through the innings and managed to take 3 wickets. But it was the second innings in which he got 6 wickets which helped South Africa prevent Australia setting up a very big target. Match at the end was drawn. But throughout the match Donald bowled some beauties.

#3 5 for 74 vs England

South Africa was playing against England after more than 2 and half decades. The first Test match of the series was at Lord’s. Proteas batted first and scored 357 runs, in reply when the Englishmen came out to bat, they were left devastated by Allan Donald who took five wickets to bundle up England for just 180. South Africa won the historic Test by a huge margin of 356 runs.

It was the first international game for South Africa after the return to the international scene. That too on one of the biggest cricket stadiums in the world, that is the Eden Gardens, which was jam packed. South Africa batted first with lots of nerves, and managed to score 177. Then when India came out to bat it was expected to be a cake walk, but Allan Donald made life tough for India. He took a five wicket haul on his debut and almost scripted a historic win for his team in Kolkata. He took 5 wickets for 29 runs.

South Africa were still winless after being reinducted by the ICC, until the third Test of the home series against India which finally brought jubiliations to the side. And the key architect of this triumph was Allan Donald who took 12 wickets in the match. He picked up 5 wickets in the first innings and was bowling with fantastic rhythm, but in the second innings, there was no answer to his bowling. He shook the Indian batting attack from it’s roots, picking up 7 wickets.
