5 possible opponents for Sting at Wrestlemania 32

After his defeat at the hands of Triple H at Wrestlemania 31, Sting could be itching for revenge a year later

With Wrestlemania 32 possibly being his last match, it is imperative that the legacy of Sting is celebrated on his way outDespite a sense that Sting’s initial reservations in joining the WWE could have been sufficiently allayed by Triple H assuming a greater hand in the running of the company, his usage thus far has done nothing to vindicate the Icon’s decision or the fans’ expectations surrounding his belated foray into the pro-wrestling giant’s territory.Such was the hype that Sting finally found the WWE policy and working environment to his liking, that the 14 years that WCW’s biggest star spent watching on the sidelines could have been quite effectively interwoven into a storyline that showcased the integrity of the Icon.Instead, consecutive losses against Triple H ( any surprises there?) and his protege Seth Rollins have quite emphatically squashed any such possibilities.Even so, given the Icon’s gravitas, eking out a solid storyline that could culminate at Wrestlemania 32, having him look every bit the legend that he is before he hangs up his boots, could still be within the realms of realistic expectations. That being said, here are 5 possible opponents that could ideally step up to the plate against Sting at Wrestlemania 32.

#1 Triple H

After his defeat at the hands of Triple H at Wrestlemania 31, Sting could be itching for revenge a year later

If Vince McMahon had a annoying penchant of burying WCW at every possibility, Triple H’s dealings with many of the wrestlers alienated over the years by Vince promised much in terms of change in WWE policy, only to have the WWE appear to bury WCW again when the Cerebral Assasin defeated Sting at Wrestlemania 31.

After having the NWO, Sting’s sworn enemies in his WCW days, come out in aid of the Stinger, the fact that DX had the final say in determining their match and the unconvincing handshake at the end of it hardly displayed any change of intent or indeed, heart from the WWE’s side.

Bearing that in mind, and how any plans for the Rock and Ronda Rousey versus Triple H and Stephanie McMahon could well have been dropped owing to Rousey’s shock defeat at UFC 193, a rematch for the Stinger to regain some pride and possibly make a final stand for WCW before retiring, could well be a realistic prospect come Wrestlemania 32.

#2 John Cena

A match against John Cena at Wrestlemania 32 would be as respectful a send-off as any if it were indeed the Stinger’s swansong

Despite the tremendous stick that he gets for his perceived shortcomings, it is irrefutable that John Cena is a master story-teller and quite an accomplished wrestler in the ring as well.

Although with the WWE and Cena both suddenly and acutely more aware of the momentum that other talent is constantly deprived of when going up against the ‘Face that runs the Place’, perhaps pitting John Cena against Sting at Wrestlemania 32 may well be the WWE’s most prudent course of action.

For one, it would both ensure that John Cena isn’t culpable of “killing” other younger talent and that Sting also receives the respectful swansong that he so richly deserves. Also, with John Cena and Sting both serving as the respective franchise players of the WWE and WCW, perhaps it would also make sense to see a babyface vs babyface showdown at Wrestlemania 32 – a concept that the WWE do not seem averse to, given John Cena’s matches against the Rock at WM 28 and 29.

#3 Kevin Owens

If the trilogy of matches that he had against John Cena was anything to go by, facing off against main event material may indeed bring out the best in Kevin Owens

With Kevin Owens clearly being high on the WWE creative team’s push list as evinced by his rather sudden but sustained elevation into the Intercontinental Title picture, a notion that he is being groomed as a top heel in the company would perhaps not be as misplaced as say, his pot belly.

That being said, it is also quite obvious that Kevin Owens is one of the top in-ring workers and promo cutters in the company as of now, and pitting him against the likes of Ryback could well be limiting the potential that the former NXT champion possesses in abundance, with all respect to the Big Guy.

Although John Cena’s string of US Open challenges featured quite a generous number of stellar matches, his trilogy of matches against Kevin Owens stands out in its in-ring wizardry and also lends much credence to the notion that Kevin Owens should be pushed into main event level feuds against the top level Superstars – enter Sting.

While Owens’ propensity with the microphone also allows the WWE creative team to effectively weave a feud around Sting’s limited dates, it is quite conceivable that the two together at Wrestlemania 32 could also pull off one of the matches of the night given the Stinger’s know-how and Owen’s masterful finesse in the ring.

#4 Bray Wyatt

Given both men’s cult following and mysterious personas, a face-off at Wrestlamania 32 could be quite easily worked into a storyline

Of all the suggested names in the list, perhaps having Bray Wyatt try and victimize Sting the way he tried with the Undertaker and Kane would be the most viable and logical route for the WWE to take going into Wrestlemania 32.

With both wrestlers enjoying more of a cult than a mainstream fanbase, Bray Wyatt’s insidious tricks against one of the masters of mind games in Sting could well spice up the build to the match as well.

It is a testament to how established a persona Bray Wyatt is, that consecutive losses to both Roman Reigns and the Brothers of Destruction still has not seen the number of cell-phone lights reduce in any arena during his entrance.

Win or lose, Bray Wyatt seems to have mastered the pulse of effectively conveying his persona and remaining over with the audience and this could also add suspense to a purported face-off between him and Sting at the Show of Shows.

#5 The Undertaker

Wrestlemania 32 could be the final opportunity for fans around the world to see what has been one of the biggest dream match-ups for years

As long as both Sting and the Undertaker are under the employ of the WWE, this dream-match scenario would likely always find the legs to circulate around the internet.

Despite the Undertaker’s Wrestlemania streak being broken and Sting arguably made to look like a subject of revenge served 14 years cold, the Icon versus Icon dynamic would likely find a nostalgic place of acceptance in many fans’ minds.

Having proven beyond a doubt that he does have sufficient fuel left in the tank for one final great match after his showing against the Beast Incarnate at Hell in a Cell, The Undertaker could well be primed to face-off against a recovering Sting at Wrestlemania 32.

For the fans who have watched these two legends compete over the course of their careers, it is a highly forseeable notion that both of them would want to go out on a high and Wrestlamania 32 could be the ideal platform for the tinge of nostalgia and glitz inherent to the occasion of having both of them square up against each other at the final possible moment.
