5 worst fan reactions at recent WWE pay-per-views

Sheamus cashed in on Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at the most recent Survivor Series.

WWE fans aren’t afraid to let their opinions be known, for better or worse. The crowd reaction plays a major role in the writing and performance of professional wrestling.Whether it’s the pop that comes from faces getting the upper hand or the heat a heel draws for his or her nefarious actions, nearly everything done in a pro wrestling ring is done with a fan reaction in mind. But sometimes, the reaction from the crowd isn’t the desired one or gets downright nasty, and that has become an issue for the WWE in the last couple years, particularly at pay-per-views.Here are five worst such incidents.

#5 Survivor Series 2015

Sheamus cashed in on Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at the most recent Survivor Series.

Perhaps the ending sequence to the 2015 edition of Survivor Series had one turn too many, even if the final match had an expected result.

Roman Reigns beat Dean Ambrose in the finals of a tournament to determine a new World Heavyweight Champion, and the crowd reacted positively but somewhat subdued because it was fairly predictable.

Then Triple H came out and offered a handshake, which Reigns answered with a spear. The crowd seemed to love that, but then Sheamus hit him with a Brogue Kick and cashed in his Money in the Bank contract.

After a near-fall, Sheamus hit his finisher again for the title. In the midst of all those twists and turns, the crowd seemed a little lost and definitely didn't approve of Sheamus as champion.

#4 Payback 2015

Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins were part of a Fatal Fourway at Payback in 2015.

The Payback pay-per-view in 2015 saw WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins defend his title in a Fatal Fourway match with Dean Ambrose, Randy Orton and Roman Reigns.

The match was full of electrifying moments, like a brief Shield reunion for a triple powerbomb on Orton.

But the ending was anything but electrifying for the crowd in attendance. After being dismantled by Reigns and Ambrose, Rollins was able to finish off Orton for the win after massive interference by The Authority.

The crowd reaction was something akin to a collective “Are you kidding me?”

#3 Elimination Chamber 2014

Randy Orton retained his WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Elimination Chamber in 2014.

Sometimes the worst reaction in professional wrestling is the lack of a reaction, and that’s what happened at the Elimination Chamber in 2014.

The event between a widely-panned Royal Rumble and a widely-praised Wrestlemania, this event held a main event chamber match between Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan, John Cena, Cesaro. Christian and Sheamus.

After lots of action that even involved an intrusion by the Wyatt family, the match concluded with Orton and Bryan as the final two. In what had become a major theme, The Authority interfered in the match to help Orton win, but instead of the expected boos, the fans were mostly silent.

Whether because they were bored or had just accepted that their favorite wasn’t going to win, that’s certainly not what the WWE was looking for.

#2 Royal Rumble 2015

Not even the support of his cousin, The Rock, could get Roman Reigns over with the Philly crowd.

The 2015 edition of the Royal Rumble was an example of how not to handle the fans. A year after successfully pushing Daniel Bryan to the world title, the fans realized their power and attempted to thwart WWE efforts to push Roman Reigns to a similar position.

Fueled by a nondescript 10-minute appearance by Bryan in the match, fans booed and heckled as the eventual result became more and more obvious with Reigns, Dean Ambrose, Kane and The Big Show as the apparent Final Four.

In the end, The Rock came out to boost his cousin’s reception, but it wasn’ t enough.

#1 Royal Rumble 2014

Fans were not nearly as excited about Batista winning as he was.

In the future, this event will be used as the standard against which other bad fan reactions are measured.

The Royal Rumble match itself had a certain buzz as fans waited for their favorites to enter, but that took an ugly turn as soon as Rey Mysterio Jr. entered in the No. 30 spot with Daniel Bryan left out.

From there, fans chanted both “Yes” and “No,” along with a chorus of boos. They got on board a little when it appeared that The Shield’s Roman Reigns might knock off Batista, but the chorus of boos reached its peak when Batista finally ousted the young Samoan to win the title shot at Wrestlemania XXX.
