6 instances of 30 or more runs scored in an over in IPL history

The IPL is back. Long sixes, fast fours, huge totals, high chases, fast fifties and centuries, and all the other razzmatazz.Seven seasons of IPL, but there have been no occasion of a batsman hitting six sixes in an over so far. There has been an over where more than 36 runs were scored though, courtesy a no-ball. In all, there have been six instances where 30 or more runs were scored from one over.May there be a seventh occasion at least in IPL 8.

#1 30 runs - Andrew Symonds to Virender Sehwag

The first instance of 30 runs scored in an over in the history of Indian Premier League happened in just the seventh match of the tournament. The venue was Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad where Deccan Chargers, the home team, were playing against Delhi Daredevils. Deccan Chargers had put on 142 runs for eigth wickets batting first.

Delhi Daredevils in reply to the target of 143, were 31 for 1 in the fourth over with Gautam Gambhir dismissed for 12 runs. But his partner Virender Sehwag was on the crease. Sehwag, playing his normal cricket, got to his 50 off 27 balls. At the end of 12 overs, Daredevils were in need of 31 runs. The bowler was Andrew Symonds bowling the 13th over to Virender Sehwag. Sehwag smashed 30 runs in the over.

#2 30 runs - Johan van der Wath to Shaun Marsh

In the fourth season of IPL at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association in Dharamsala, another set of 30 runs were scored in an over. It was the match between Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Kings XI Punjab were batting first and had lost Paul Valthaty in the fourth over with the score at 25. The other opener and skipper Adam Gilchrist was in partnership with Shaun Marsh.

Both the Australian left hand batsmen were hitting the ball well and completed their 100-run partnership at the end of 12 overs. It was the 15th over of the innings bowled by South African Johan van der Wath to Shaun Marsh, in which Marsh collected 30 runs hitting three sixes and as many fours.

Both the batsmen continued the hitting and became the first pair to put on a 200-run partnership in the history of IPL. They both put on 206 runs with Adam Gilchrist scoring his second IPL hundred and Shaun Marsh remaining unbeaten on 79. Their total of 232/2 was too hot for RCB to handle as they lost by 111 runs.

#3 31 runs - Rahul Sharma to Chris Gayle and Saurabh Tiwary

At Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, Royal Challgengers Bangalore were chasing target of 183 set by Pune Warriors India. RCB were 76/3 after 12 overs though Chris Gayle was at crease. They needed 107 runs in 8 overs at a run rate of more than 13.

Chirs Gayle was batting at 41 runs in 36 balls. It was the 13th over when he decided to take on the Pune Warriors’ bowling. Rahul Sharma bowled the over and at the strike was Saurabh Tiwary. Tiwary took a single of the first ball and Gayle came to the strike. After that it was only sixes all the way. He hit 5 sixes in the remaining 5 balls of the over.

Gayle was dismissed for 81 runs off 48 balls in the 16th over when required run rate was nearing 14. In the end Saurabh Tiwary and AB de Villiers won the match for Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets. 21 runs were required of the last over bowled by Ashish Nehra. They hit 24.

#4 33 runs - Ravi Bopara to Chris Gayle & Manoj Tiwary

The joint second highest number of runs in an over is 33 runs. It was another one involving Chris Gayle, but for Kolkata Knight Riders and not Royal Challengers Bangalore. It was the 34th match of the third IPL held at the Eden Gardens between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab. KKR were batting first and had a decent start by their openers. They scored 89 runs at loss of one wicket at the end of 12 overs.

The 13th over was bowled by Ravi Bopara and the batsman on the strike was Manoj Tiwary and on the other end was Chris Gayle. Gayle hit four sixes in consecutive balls in the over and then two wides yeilding seven runs increased the over tally to 33 runs.

It was then the most expensive over in IPLs.

KKR went on to score 200 runs for three wicket in 20 overs but lost the match by eight wickets thanks to Mahela Jayawardene’s fine century – 110* off 59 balls.

#5 33 runs - Parvinder Awana to Suresh Raina

This time it was a qualifier match; the second qualifier of the 2014 season between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. With help of Virender Sehwag’s 122 off 58 balls, Kings XI Punjab set a target of 227 for Chennai Super Kings to qualify for the final match of the season.

It looked quite achievable for CSK when they got to 100 runs in just the sixth over. The reason was Suresh Raina who had scored 87 runs off 25 balls in the powerplay alone. It included an over of 33 runs against Parvinder Awana, who bowled the final over of the powerplay, the 6th over.

Raina hit two sixes off the first two balls and then five fours in the next five balls that included a no ball. In the end, CSK fell short by 24 runs though they required just 127 off the last 14 overs.

#6 37 runs - Prasanth Parameswaran to Chris Gayle

The highest number of runs scored in a single over is 37 runs. It were by Chris Gayle for Royal Challengers Bangalore to Prasanth Parameswaran of Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the 2011 season. Kochi Tuskers Kerala played just the one IPL season and it was in the 50th match of the season that this fateful over was bowled.

KTK set a target of 126 for RCB at Bangalore. RCB openers Dilshan and Gayle scored nine runs in the first over and 20 in the second over. In the third they scored more than they scored combined in the first two. The third over was played by Chris Gayle completely and he hit four sixes and three fours to score 37 runs which included a no ball.

In conclusion, it is to be noted that Suresh Raina and Chris Gayle are the only players to have hit seven boundaries in an over in IPL history.
