10 Things you probably did not know about Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Everyone who tuned into the fight of the century expecting Floyd Mayweather Jr. to lose his first match went home disappointed as the boxer once again silenced the critics with his performance. He had a commendable win against Manny Pacquiao, even though, his tactics are getting dissected all over the internet, but hey, does he look like someone who cares about what the internet says?Mayweather is currently 48-0 when it comes to his professional career. And with the win, he has once again stamped his Hall of fame brilliance. But how well do you know the new unified champion? Here is a look at some of the things you probably did not know about him.

#10 His favourites

The Epic movie that stars Brad Pitt in it is apparently Floyd Mayweather Jr’s favourite movie. Mayweather has mentioned several times that it is a film that he would love to watch over and over again.

Apart from this, Floyd Mayweather is an avid lover of the Barbecue sauce. He does not like using mustard or ketchup on his hot dogs and instead likes a good amount of BBQ sauce. Warm water is what Mayweather orders first whenever he visits a hotel, and not for drinking, but for the purpose of soaking his silverware. His favorite daily routine you might ask? The answer is brushing. He does it for ten whole minutes.

#9 Dancing with the stars

After the fight with Manny was over, Hollywood star Jim Carrey tweeted his confusion regarding whether he was witnessing a boxing match or an episode of Dancing with the Stars. But in reality, away from his boxing ventures, Mayweather is someone who enjoys his dance and songs. He has a record label registered in the name of Philthy Rich Records and also was a contestant in the fifth season of “Dancing With the Stars” reality show in 2007. Oh, the irony!

Floyd was paired up with the American-Ukrainian dancer Karina Smirnoff and the duo went on to finish ninth in the show. They were the fourth team to be eliminated and though he did not win the competition, Floyd managed to show the world a side that we never saw till then.

#8 He came from a poor background

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is mostly projected as a money hungry boxer these days, but his childhood days were entirely different. He grew up in a poor family in New Jersey and had to share his bedroom with seven other family members. And to make matters worse, there was lack of electricity and water in the house for most of the time.

With just three trousers, three shirts and a pair of shoes to his name, Mayweather struggled to make ends meet but never skipped a gym day as he wanted to get out of where he was and become a champion.

#7 He enjoys Manicure and Pedicure, with Justin Beiber sometimes

Well, imagine the meanest fighter in the boxing ring having a manicure and a pedicure? Bizarre, right? Floyd Mayweather Jr. does just that when he has free time on his weekends. It might not sound like a good idea with him using the boxing gloves on a regular basis, but since it is one of his pastimes, we cannot blame him here can we?

And what would be weirder? Justin Bieber joins him at times. This friendship that formed in the manicure meetings was also one of the reasons why Bieber showed up in Mayweather’s corner in the fight against Manny Pacquiao.

#6 He wrestled in WWE WrestleMania

WWE’s love of boxers is no secret as legends like Mike Tyson and Mohammad Ali have made an appearance in the company’s biggest show – WrestleMania. In the 2008 edition of WrestleMania, Floyd Mayweather Jr. also joined the list of boxers at WrestleMania and, unlike most of his predecessors, Floyd actually wrestled a match at the pay-per-view.

The bout came against The World’s Largest Athlete, Big Show and Floyd went on to win it. Floyd later claimed that he was paid a whopping amount of $20 million for the fight. He made numerous appearances for WWE after that, but competing in WrestleMania is something that not everyone would have in their resume.

#5 He has a pretty solid criminal record

Although Floyd Mayweather Jr. has won almost all his fights in the boxing ring, he hasn’t been able to do the same when it comes to his court cases. Floyd has a pretty impressive (in a bad way) criminal record which includes multiple instances of domestic violence.

In the year of 2012, Floyd was convicted to a 90-day jail sentence for battery on his former girlfriend, Josie Harris. Apart from this, he had to spend 100 hours in community service and pay a hefty amount as a fine. His bad boy reputation that makes rounds around the internet is fed by this criminal history and, of course, due to his attitude.

#4 He is the richest athlete in the world

No, it is not your favourite Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Tiger Woods, David Beckham or Roger Federer. The richest athlete in the sporting world is Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather.

He was on the top of the Forbes and Sports illustrated list of 50 highest paid athletes in the world for 2012 and 2013 and went on to retain his Forbes ranking in 2014. His numbers from 2014 are nothing short of spectacular as he managed to earn $105 million from just 72 minutes of work.

This record is obviously going to come crashing down once the year 2015 comes to an end as he has already earned twice the amount from one fight and he still has another one coming up in September.

#3 He has no endorsements

Okay, Floyd Mayweather is the richest athlete out there, but what makes the achievement more impressive is that, he does not have any endorsements. That is, in simple words, he earns his entire income from the fights he participates in.

While other close names like Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James and Tiger Woods earn a major portion of their total worth from endorsing brands like Nike, McDonalds and Coca Cola, Mayweather has stayed away from endorsement deals. His record of domestic violence has also kept the big companies away from him but with the money he has now, he wouldn’t need any endorsements, does he?

#2 Boxing runs in his family

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not the first professional boxer to come out of his family. Before he conquered the boxing scene, his father, Floyd Mayweather Sr. was also in the sport and was one of the contenders for Hall of fame boxer Sugar Ray Leonard in the welter weight category.

Mayweather Sr. is one of the mainstays in Floyd’s Money Team and is seen around the world as someone who pushes Floyd to his best. And apart from his father, his uncles, Jeff Mayweather and Roger Mayweather are also boxers. Roger is currently Floyd’s trainer and is a former World Champion himself.

#1 He won Bronze medal in the 1996 Olympics

Before Floyd became the Boxing champion he is today, he had an Olympic background. At the tender age of 19, he competed in the featherweight (57-kg) division at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics representing the United States of America.

Floyd was pretty much an underdog back then and no one had their money on the youngster who came out of nowhere. He, however, exceeded expectations and went on to win a Bronze medal in the tournament. He was defeated by the eventual silver medalist of the competition Serafim Todorov of Bulgaria in the semi-final but not bad for a 19-year-old, is it?

In the road to the bronze, he defeated Lorenzo Aragon of Cuba, making him the first American to do so in 20 years.
