Chelsea: Summer signings' half-yearly report

After finishing third in the Premier League last season behind Manchester City and Liverpool, Jose Mourinho made five additions to his senior squad in the summer. The London outift signed Diego Costa and Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid, Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, Loic Remy from Queens Park Rangers, and Didier Drogba made a return to Stamford Bridge. We take a look at their performances for the league leaders in the first half of the season.

#1 Diego Costa - 9/10

After leading Atletico Madrid to La Liga title and missing out on the Champions League by a whisker, Diego Costa joined Chelsea for £32 million. Since then, the 26-year-old has 17 goals in 19 league appearances for the league leaders. Costa also won the Premier League player of the month in August for scoring four times in three games. The Spanish international scored his first hat-trick for Chelsea against Swansea in a 4-2 win. Other notable performances include the ones against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge and Liverpool at Anfield.

Costa has proved his critics wrong after a poor World Cup campaign in Brazil and has been a key player for Jose Mourinho. It remains to be seen if he can break the record of Luis Suarez, Alan Shearer, and Cristiano Ronaldo for most goals in a season.

#2 Cesc Fabregas - 9/10

Another big name signing for Chelsea in the summer, Fabregas joined from Barcelona in a €33 million deal. The 27-year-old has 4 goals and 18 assists to his name in 27 appearances. Fabregas also has the most number of assists in the Premier League this season. Needless to say, the Spanish international has been instrumental to Chelsea's dominance in the Premier League this season. Fabregas and Costa formidable partnership was the key reason to Chelsea strong start of the season and at one point the London outfit looked unbeatable.

With Fabregas at the helm, Chelsea play an attractive brand of football, something they lacked last season. Fabregas also has most number of key passes and passes completed to his name in the Premier League.

#3 Filipe Luis - 6/10

Just like Diego Costa, Brazilian international Filipe Luis also decided to leave La Liga champions Atletico Madrid for Chelsea in the summer. The 29-year-old labelled his £15.8 million deal to Chelsea as a dream come true. His appearances in the Premier League has been restricted to just 5 games, due to Cesar Azpilicueta remarkable performances for the league leaders. Filipe Luis was a key player to Diego Simeone's side that won the La Liga and reached the Champions League final, but it's difficult to rate him at this point due to alck of games at Stamford Bridge.

The left-back has been mostly started games in Cup matches and has performed quite well, but it will take some doing for him to displace Azpilicueta from the starting XI. Filipe Luis recent strong performances include the ones against Swansea and Liverpool.

#4 Loic Remy - 6/10

Loic Remy was tipped to joining Liverpool in the summer transfer window and even went to United States to have a medical for the Merseyside outfit, but due to his medical concerns Liverpool decided not to sign him. Loic Remy then joined Chelsea in a £10.5 million deal. The France international has just played 420 minutes of football this season for Chelsea, scoring 4 goals.

The 28-year-old made his debut against Swansea and scored a goal after coming on from the bench. He also scored his first goal for Chelsea in the Champions League against Maribor in a 6-0 win at Stamford Bridge. Remy was bought by Jose Mourinho to be a back-up for main man Diego Costa and one can't really be critical of his limited performances.

#5 Didier Drogba - 6/10

Didier Drogba made a return to Stamford Bridge in the summer signing a one year contract, he declared he couldn’t turn fown the opportunity to work with Jose Mourinho again. Just like Loic Remy, Drogba playing time has been very limited and has scored 5 goals in 553 minutes of football he has played.

Drogba first goal after his return to Chelsea came in a 6-0 win against Maribor at Stamford Bridge in the Champions League. His first goal in the Premier League came against rivals Manchester United in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. The Chelsea legend scored his 50th goal in the Champions for the club against Schalke. His other notable performances include the one against Tottenham and Newcastle United.
