Five all-time records Kane Williamson could break

Stephen Fleming is the heaviest scoring Kiwi batsman

New Zealand have found a new batting hero and his name is Kane Williamson. The Kiwi batsman may have been around for over 5 years now, but it is only in the last couple of years that he has started to gain prominence as a genius in the making. The year 2015 has been a particularly fruitful one for Williamson has he has scored 1172 runs so far in as few as 8 Tests at a mind-boggling average of a shade over 90. Considering what he has achieved in a 46-Test long career, there are chances of the prolific batsman breaking a number of records during the course of his career. Here are five records which could be eclipsed by Kane Williamson in Tests:

#1 Highest run-scorer for New Zealand

Stephen Fleming is the heaviest scoring Kiwi batsman

Taking into account his run tally of 3895 in just 46 Tests, Kane Williamson looks all set to surpass former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming as the country’s leading run scorer. Fleming played 111 Tests and amassed 7172 runs in his career.

While his teammates Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor look all set to get there before him, Williamson may be able to surpass the eventual career aggregates of both these players if he continues to perform well. This is because Taylor and McCullum are both in their 30s whereas Kane Williamson is still in the mid-20s and has ample time in his hands provided fitness issues remain at a minimum.

#2 Most Test hundreds by a New Zealand batsman

Martin Crowe’s 17 Test centuries are soon going to be the 2nd best figures for a Kiwi

The record which Kane Williamson is likely to get to in the quickest time is the one for most Test centuries by a Kiwi batsman. The current record holder is Martin Crowe with 17 Test tons and Williamson is hot on his heels with 13 centuries already, 9 of which have come in the past 24 months.

Considering the fact that he is still very young and may have a long career ahead of him, one can at least expect Williamson to double his present tally of hundreds, if not more. Where he is at least 10 years from now will decide how close he reaches to the likes of Sachin, Kallis and Sangakkara.

#3 First New Zealand player with a 50-plus Test average

Having a 50+ average is something no Kiwi batsman has ever managed

Another record which beckons Kane Williamson in the imminent future is that of becoming the first New Zealand batsman to have a Test average of 50 or above. With a career average of 49.93 presently, the stylish batsman is within striking distance of the milestone and could get there as early as the next Test he plays.

Williamson already holds the highest Test average for a Kiwi batsman, the next best being John Reid who averaged 46.28 in the 19 Tests that he played. Having a 50-plus Test average will push the batsman into an exclusive club of great batsmen who got to the milestone during their careers.

#4 Most hundreds by a batsman in a calendar year

Mohammad Yousuf has the record of most 100s in a calendar year

In what has turned out to be a magical year with the bat for Kane Williamson, he has scored 5 centuries in just 8 Test matches thus far. If he continues to have such phenomenal purple patches in the future, Williamson could go on to break the record for most centuries in a calendar year.

Currently, former Pakistani batsman Mohammad Yousuf holds the record as he had scored 9 hundreds from 11 Tests in the year 2006. Although this may turn out to be a stiff one for Williamson, he surely has the capability to surpass this record in the future.

#5 Highest individual score by a New Zealand batsman

Brendon McCullum is the only Kiwi to score a triple century

Brendon McCullum scored the first and only triple century by a New Zealand batsman when he got 302 against India last year. Quite obviously, it is currently the highest individual score for New Zealand in Tests. Ross Taylor had given the record a shot at Perth this year but fell agonisingly short by just 12 runs as he got out for 290.

Kane Williamson is someone who may be able to eclipse this record at some point of time. His highest score in Tests is an unbeaten 242 against Sri Lanka in January this year and he has also shown a tendency for scoring big hundreds. It is this hunger for runs which puts Williamson in good stead to break McCullum’s record.
