Top 10 teams who have lost the highest number of finals

Losing a final is worse than getting knocked out early on, something that I believe in. In this slideshow, we have compiled a list of ten teams who have lost the highest number of finals in all tournaments including ICC World Cup, ICC World T20 and many more. The surprising part? Sri Lanka are not on top.

#10 Zimbabwe: 4 finals

Zimbabwe have lost a total of 4 finals, one each against India, Pakistan, England and most recently Sri Lanka. Their series-final defeat came against Sri Lanka in the 2010 Zimbabwe Triangular Series, a match where Sri Lanka won by 9 wickets with 92 balls remaining.

#9 Kenya: 4 finals

Kenya have lost four finals, three against Zimbabwe and one against India. In the 1998 Coca-Cola Triangular Series, Kenya were defeated by India by 9 wickets, one of their biggest defeats,

#8 South Africa: 9 finals

Always known as the chokers, South Africa are actually pretty below in the list, given the fact that they were knocked out way before the final in almost every other tournament. Their biggest defeat came against Australia in the 1993/94 Benson & Hedges World Series, a match where Australia won by 69 runs.

#7 England: 14 finals

England have lost the World Cup final three times, something that the White Lions would not be proud of. Their first defeat came against West Indies in 1979, the second was against Australia in 1987 and the third one came against Pakistan. Their biggest defeat however was in the 1999 Carlton & United Series where they were beaten by Australia with a margin of 162 runs.

#6 New Zealand: 16 finals

Sitting in sixth position, New Zealand have lost a total of 16 finals among which their biggest defeat came against Australia in 1982, a match where they lost by 149 runs.

#5 West Indies: 20 finals

West Indies' 1983 World Cup defeat is still fresh in the memory of every Indian fans, the match where India won their first World Cup after beating West Indies by 43 runs. However, their biggest defeat came against Australia, back in 2000/01 where they lost by 134 runs.

#4 Sri Lanka: 26 finals

Yes, they are not the first in the list. Yes, I was as surprised as you are when I was compiling the list. But, since this list includes defeats in all tournaments, Sri Lanka have been left behind, something they wouldn't complain about I am sure. Their 50-over World Cup defeats came against Australia (2007) and India (2011), while in the 20-over format of the game, they lost to Pakistan in 2009 and West Indies in 2012.

#3 Australia: 30 finals

Australia has lost a total of 30 finals, out of which two came in the 50-over World Cup and one in the T20 format of the game. Their first World Cup defeat came against West Indies at Lord's, the match they lost by 17 runs. They lost the second World Cup to Sri Lanka by seven wickets. In the 20-over format of the game, Australia has lost the 2010 ICC World T20 against England which they lost by 7 wickets.

#2 India: 32 finals

Second in the list is India with their 32 defeats in tournaments which includes their heart-breaking 2003 ICC World Cup defeat against Australia where they lost the match by 125 runs. Their worst final defeat came in the 2000/01 Coca-Cola Champions Trophy where Sri Lanka won by 245 runs.

#1 Pakistan: 34 finals

From a span of 1985-2014, Pakistan has lost the highest number of finals in all tournaments, a record that no Pakistani supporter would appreciate. Among these matches, Pakistan's most disspaointing defeat would be the one that came against Australia in the 1999 World Cup; Australia won the match by 8 wickets. Their T20 loss against India in the 2007 World T20 Tournament is yet another World Cup loss for Pakistan.
