Top moments from Day 1 of the 2nd Test between India and South Africa

Pujara’s brilliance sent Faf packing

It was a highly satisfying day at the Chinnaswamy Stadium for Indian cricket fans as India yet again polished off South Africa for just 214 before their openers added 80 runs in an unbeaten partnership until close of play. The double delight, however, was AB de Villiers’ fighting 85-run knock in his 100th Test match at his home away from home, Bengaluru. There were several outstanding moments on an eventful Day 1 of the 2nd Test in the Gandhi-Mandela series. Here we have picked out 4 of the best among them:

#1 Pujara\'s great reflex catch to dismiss Du Plessis

Pujara’s brilliance sent Faf packing

It was a piece of sheer magic at short leg from Cheteshwar Pujara which ensured another failure for South Africa’s Faf Du Plessis and another wicket for an Indian spinner in the series.

Ashwin was fired up after having picked up the wicket of van Zyl off the second ball of his first over and was looking for another one. Du Plessis stepped down the track but misjudged the flight completely and the ball took the inside edge of his bat and headed low towards Pujara at short leg. He was lightning quick in his response and took the catch just inches off the ground.

The on-field umpires were not sure whether the catch was taken cleanly and so they referred the decision to the third umpire who ruled in favour of Pujara after viewing the catch a number of times.

#2 Aaron gets Amla with an absolute peach

Varun Aaron is ecstatic after uprooting Amla’s off stump

Even though the Indian spinners ruled the roost on Day 1 of the 2nd Test, the credit for delivering the ‘ball of the day’ goes entirely to pacer Varun Aaron. His delivery to dismiss the dangerous Hashim Amla in the 15th over of the day was a beauty beyond doubt. Amla was in the process of getting his eye in when he got a 140 kph full length delivery which pitched on middle stump and moved just enough to blow away his off stump.

Aaron had the ace Proteas batsman caught in the crease looking to defend what he thought was a straighter one on middle and had him with that hint of movement. The crowd at the Chinnaswamy Stadium erupted into a deafening cheer as Amla’s stump went cartwheeling and Varun Aaron celebrated in a pumped-up fashion.

#3 A special appearance by \'The Wall\'

The cricket crazy crowd at the Chinnaswamy Stadium got an added bonus today in the form of Rahul Dravid’s presence to witness the Day One of the 2nd Test in the Gandhi-Mandela series. During the 2nd over of the Indian innings, the camera panned towards Dravid in the VIP box and as his face flashed on the giant screen, a loud cheer went up among the thousands in attendance.

This was followed by chants of ‘Dravid, Dravid’ as the legendary cricketer looked towards the camera in his usual composed manner. Dravid’s special appearance turned out to be the icing on the cake for an already memorable day for the Indian fans.

#4 AB de Villiers\' grand entry in his 100th Test

AB made 85 in his 100th Test

It may have been India’s day with both bat and ball, but the moment of the day clearly belonged to the South African hero who is playing his 100th Test, AB de Villiers. Never since Sachin Tendulkar has there been a cricketer who has received so much warmth all over the world and especially in India.

At the end of the 15th over the fans in Bengaluru were celebrating Hashim Amla’s dismissal at one moment, and the very next moment saw chants of ‘ABD, ABD, ABD!!!’ engulf the stadium as the champion batsman walked out to bat in his 100th Test.

It was incredible to watch a foreign player get such a great reception from an Indian crowd and showed the impact AB de Villiers has made over the Indian cricket audience. He went on to oblige the spectators for their love and support with an enterprising 85 which helped his team cross the 200-run mark.
